WAITING
FOR TOMMY: JAMIE RICH
By
Richard Johnston
RICHARD:
What's the product from Oni that you're proudest of? Why?
JAMIE:
Gosh, it's always hard, and I usually have to step back and
say the work with I've done with Andi and Chynna, because
those two creators' books are the shining examples of what
I left Dark Horse to do. Those are the comics I was most desperate
to read. That's if you put a gun to my head. I can tick off
just about every book we've done and have a good reason why
it's special. Like, today Union Station comes out, and I had
to thank Ande Parks for giving me a gangster comic, and for
giving me a chance to work with Eduardo Barreto again. There
are very few Oni books I wish we never did, and get me drunk
at a con, I'll probably tell you. And even then, the intentions
at the beginning were noble.
RICHARD:
Oni has been ahead of the game with the likes of Kevin Smith,
Greg Rucka, Blair Witch and oodles more. Who of the current
crew do you reckon will be the next surprise hit Oni has on
its hands?
JAMIE:
No question, it's Antony Johnston. That guy can write anything.
His scripts blow me away. They're clean and concise and he
nails it every time. His first four books with us are a romantic
comedy, psychological horror/action, Shakespearian crime,
and then straight-up horror. All done with equal skill. After
him, it's Neal Shaffer. Neal is a similar writer when it comes
to skill, though I think he will end up going on the road
less taken. Antony's work is challenging and smart work, but
not in the same way as Neal's. Antony is Billy Wilder, Neal
is Jean-Luc Godard.
RICHARD:
Finally, spoil a surprise for Joe. Tell us one of the projects
Oni have got coming up, so that he won't be able to announce
it exclusively once you've gone.
JAMIE:
Ha! That'll teach him for being at a con in Vegas while this
is all going down! Well, we haven't really leaked much yet
about our next book with the Days Like This team, J. Torres
& Scott Chantler. It's called Scandalous, and it's about feuding
gossip columnists in the Golden Age of Hollywood. Or what
would you say to a Queen & Country script book, compiling
the first story arc with sketches by Steve Rolston? Or the
fact that Rolston is returning to the title for the anniversary
issue, #25?
RICHARD:
Yeah, yeah, yeah, Queen And Country this, Queen And Country
that, but feuding gossip columnists?? You're publishing a
comic just for me aren't you Jamie? I'm touched, I'm really
touched.
Jamie
Rich publishes Oni Press. for now. Rich Johnston writes Lying
In The Gutters. Next week, Geoff Johns. The week after, Micah
Wright.
