WAITING
FOR TOMMY
By
Richard Johnston
Last week,
a user known as Felicia posted to the Brian Bendis message boards
over at Imagecomics.com. She wrote much sound and fury about
Marvel. And most everyone scoffed. After all, she was making
up ludicrous stories, that Mark Waid was to be fired off Fantastic
Four, to be replaced by Bill Jemas. Earlier this week,
Newsarama ran that exact same story from different sources
and got quotes from Mark Waid. It transpired he was fired
by Marvel after Felicia had made that post on Imagecomics.com.
Basically, she knew before Waid did. Waid also said he'd been
told Jemas would replace him.
Later this week,
Joe Quesada denied that aspect of the story. But I have had
a number of conversations with prominent industry figures
connected with Marvel that confirm Bill Jemas was to have
been replacing Mark Waid on Fantastic Four. However, in the
light of the immense fuss on the internet, that's either no
longer the case, or he'll be co-writing the title, uncredited.
Which is an accusation
levelled against him for a number of Marvel books right now,
for better or worse.
But back to Felicia.
The girl with connections at Marvel and not afraid to spill
the beans over comic book badness. Now, I've been made aware
of who she is and why she has connections with Marvel. And
naturally, that's not being revealed here. Unless of course
this is another stunt from Joe Quesada and she's just Bill
Jemas in a dress. But we'll get to that later.
Felicia makes
a number of comments about Marvel and Marvel employees. I
am sure that Nick Barrucci at Dynamic Force would like me
to point that these are not necessarily the view of Dynamic
Forces. Hell, the way Nick and Bill and Joe play around in
the men's saunas, I'm sure they're not. But it's a credit
to Dynamic Forces that they'll allow the following to be printed,
when they're such a commercially sensitive company. Go buy
a statue or something [Ed Note: Thanks Rich, readers can do
so right here!].
Right, to the
woman in hand. Felicia makes a number of quite bold statements
in this column. They are her opinion, based on her observations
and understanding. She has biases which should be clear in
the content of her statements, but that's not necessarily
a bad thing. This is, if nothing else, the opinions of one
person - just that of one person who appears to be remarkably
informed.
She picked up
the phone. For one so brazen online, she had quite a soft
spoken voice.
RICHARD
JOHNSTON: Felicia. You caused quite a fuss this week, you
know. The Image boards are down, news sites are down, too much
traffic everywhere, the internet can't cope. How does that make
you feel?
FELICIA: I think the reaction was primarily due to the
fact that the news was about Waid being let go more that I knew
beforehand. Though I'll tell you, I think Bendis is mad at me
because his board went down for what it seems like two days
now. A lot of people are privately messaging me and asking who
I am. So I guess it makes me feel a bit special... I've been
accused of having a bloated head in the past... but I'm trying
not to swell up with glee if that's what you mean. The fanboy
and fangirls know who they like, so (Waid being fired) that's
a bigger shock than some girl from nowhere knowing it was going
to happen.
RICHARD:
It's fun when you make the internet crash - only done it a
few times myself. For you it seems like second nature. It's
even more fun when publishers start having meetings about
you and deciding what to do about you. Are you afraid, are
you very afraid?
FELICIA: Well, yeah. What was scary was that I ended
up going to all these sites, and my post was up everywhere.
I knew then it was no time before someone would end up emailing
it to someone else over at Marvel. There was a lot of suspense,
you know, waiting to see if there would be a reaction from
them over there, then after a few hours yesterday... it would
be a downhill rollercoaster ride both for me and the person(s)
I care about working within the company. I'm more concerned
now that this person(s) may be found and fired.
