WAITING FOR TOMMY: JOHN CASSADAY
By Richard Johnston

RICHARD: It suits you. Don't worry, the masters will have edited it out to save our blushes. I wonder if they'll edit out "*****"? Gaiman famously got that past Karen Berger on Books Of Magic.

I've drifted haven't I? When Image started, one of the calls they made to A-list artists was to throw off the shackles of their writers. That people bought comics mainly for the art, that most artists with experience in comics could actually write themselves a decent story, and keep all of the proceeds as a result. Are you ever tempted to seize the reins?
JOHN: I don't wanna open the can of worms that was Image in the 90's, but the lack of "decent story" was the problem. And after a while even the art became lazy and uninspired. There were all these books with lame story AND art. The only thing left was the collectibility and we both know how that turned out. I personally didn't start regaining an interest in comics until Sin City and Hellboy came to my attention. After all that, however, the answer to your question is YES. Stay tuned, eh?

ASTONISHING X-MEN #1 - SIGNED BY JOHN CASSADAY

RICHARD: You mention Sin City and Hellboy, both continuing stories through a variety of series, with strong iconic imagery. Is the answer to the question, will your project be of a similar form, also be YES? Something to associate you with for a long time, without tying you down?
JOHN: Yeah, that would be great. But I'd want to focus on more than one character, though. More than one title.

RICHARD: Talking of which, do you see the end of Planetary in sight?
JOHN: I've got two scripts in front of me and Warren is in the middle of the next, which is #22. I plan to plug away at them as they come during my X-Men stint. Beyond that, your guess is as good as mine. Warren has made noise about extending the series past the original 25 issues in order to take his time ending it. If it needs more pages and we stretch it to maybe 27 or 28, why not? It has taken forever and at times has definitely been a monkey on my back, but I absolutely love Planetary. I know I'll miss it when it ends. However, it will be nice to close the back cover of that last one and move on...

RICHARD: You can envisage an Absolute Planetary taking a large portion of my bookshelf though, right?
JOHN: What, you looking for a bribe?

RICHARD: Scott? Scott Dunbier? You reading this? You know my address..

John Cassaday is the artist for Planetary and Astonishing X-Men. Rich Johnston writes Lying In The Gutters.
