MARVEL GOES BACK TO THE FUTURE THIS DECEMBER WITH 2099 ONE-SHOT COMICS

Marvel is revisiting the future universe of the year 2099! It's perfect timing -- the year Marvel celebrates its 80th anniversary, Marvel Comics will go 80 years into the future with a series of one-shots this December. Writers Ed Brisson, Jody Houser, Nick Spencer, and Chip Zdarsky will team up with artists Damian Couceiro, Francesco Mobili, Jose Carlos Silva, Gerardo Sandoval, and Marco Castiello to follow familiar characters including Spider-Man, Ghost Rider, Doctor Doom, and more while bringing some new faces into the mix.

Chip Zdarsky, writer of DOOM 2099 #1, said, “I loved the original DOOM 2099, so this is a total dream project, getting to help reinvent the world. In our one-shot we do our best to really hold onto the spirit of the original, of Victor Von Doom starting from the bottom, while giving it some new twists, like his astounding 2099 hip hop career.” Art for this issue will be created by Marco Castiello.

Nick Spencer will go from one Spidey to another on SPIDER-MAN 2099 #1, which will follow this universe's Spider-Man Miguel O'Hara as he struggles to save the Marvel Universe from an uncertain future. Drawing this issue is Jose Carlos Silva.

Spencer will also write 2099 OMEGA #1, which teases a future "that ends here" and is being run by Doctor Doom -- with no heroes to save it! Art is provided by Gerardo Sandoval.

Ed Brisson shared his plans for GHOST RIDER 2099 #1: "In GHOST RIDER 2099, we reimagine the origin of Ghost Rider that pays homage to the '90s series, but still pushes the character in a new and exciting direction. Lots of cameos for sharp-eyed readers!" Damian Couceiro is the artist who will bring this Ghost Rider, Kenshiro "Zero" Cochrane, to life.

Finally, Jody Houser was asked to describe VENOM 2099 #1 in one word: "Help." Art will be provided by Francesco Mobili.

The world of 2099 is sure to raise a lot of questions while bringing even more secrets out of the shadows -- What kind of chaos has Doctor Doom caused? How will the future be saved? What is Alchemax? You'll find out the answers to these questions and more when 2099 arrives this December!

WHY 'HOUSE OF X' #5 WILL GO DOWN IN X-MEN HISTORY
09/18/19 @ 10:45 pm EST
Source: Marvel | Categories: Marvel | Comments (0) | E-mail Article | Add a Comment

WARNING! THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR WEDNESDAY'S HOUSE OF X #5.

After the death and drama in HOUSE OF X #4, writer Jonathan Hickman and artist Pepe Larraz had fans wondering what would become of their favorite X-Men. After all, it’s not every day that Cyclops, Wolverine, Jean Grey, Mystique, Nightcrawler, Archangel, Husk, and M die. But today’s HOUSE OF X #5 is a real game changer...

x

Because it means the X-Men no longer have to fear death.

However, it does raise several questions that the story doesn’t attempt to answer...yet. One of the joys of Hickman’s relaunch is how he's been inspired by several aspects from key X-Men runs of the past. In this case, Hickman took a minor character from Brian Michael Bendis’ X-Men run and gave him a new purpose; it turns out that Goldballs’ power isn’t useless after all... He creates eggs that can be used to give mutants viable new bodies. But this only works in conjunction with the powers of fellow Bendis creation, Eva Bell, as well as Proteus, Elixir, and Hope Summers, the Mutant Messiah.

It seems that Hope is finally living up to her billing, since her powers allow the other mutants to pull off the resurrections while Professor Xavier uses Cerebro to put their souls back into their bodies. It’s easy to believe that Xavier can back up their minds, but their souls are another matter. Can any machine truly copy and restore such a thing? If the X-Men were to visit the afterlife again, would they encounter their souls there? The first few issues of Jason Aaron’s AMAZING X-MEN (2013) established that Nightcrawler gave up his eternal reward in Heaven to return to Earth. And he was under the impression that he could not return to Heaven again. Was he right?

Jean is somewhat cheeky when asked by Storm if she is who she appears to be. “I’m the only ‘me’ that ever was,” says Jean. But between Jean, Phoenix, and Madelyne Pryor, there have been at least three Jeans—or four, if we’re counting the Teen Jean who spent a great deal of time in the present alongside the other original X-Men in the past.

Readers also have to wonder if the resurrection has left Wolverine with bone claws again. Adamantium is not a biological component, and it probably isn't easily recreated. There’s also the question of what happened to the X-Men’s bodies from their suicide mission. Nightcrawler, Mystique, and Wolverine’s bodies were lost to space. But there’s a chance their enemies have the rest of the bodies. What might they do with that genetic material?

Another new aspect of the story is a ceremony held to celebrate the return of the previously deceased X-Men. Storm leads a fanatical call-and-response, heralding the new dawn of the mutants. What does this mean in a larger context for her, how she's changing, and who she'll become? What does this mean for the X-Men?

The larger implications of Xavier and Magneto’s plans have also begun to play out. With their resurrection process, they may have the ability to bring back the millions of mutants who were slaughtered in Genosha. The implications of that would be huge, because it means that mutants would once again have a significant population, no longer facing extinction. But that doesn’t mean that new threats still aren’t on the horizon.

The issue closes with a stunning moment as Xavier and Magneto welcome several of their former enemies to Krakoa. Exodus, Sinister, Apocalypse, and more have come under their banner. It’s a shocking alliance that looks like it's going to change the X-Men forever. Readers might think that even the world’s most powerful telepath should watch his back with friends like these, but there are still more surprises to come as HOUSE OF X and POWERS OF X race towards the finish line...and the Dawn of X.

‘ARROW’ FINAL SEASON: WILLA HOLLAND RETURNS, RECURS AS THEA

Arrow Final Season Thea

The character that Arrow fans most hoped would put in an appearance during the final season — Oliver’s sister, Thea Queen, played by former series regular Willa Holland — will indeed be seen again, TVLine reports. But wait, there’s more: Holland is confirmed to not just guest-star but recur during The CW series’ 10-episode farewell run.

“We are thrilled to have Willa back in our final season,” says showrunner Beth Schwartz.

An original cast member, Holland began dialing back her Arrow appearance in Season 5 (to 14 of 23 episodes), before parting ways with the series in the 16th episode of Season 6. As that exit storyline went, Thea, with longtime love Roy Harper in tow, left Star City to trot the globe and shut down some recently unearthed Lazarus Pits.

Arrow‘s eighth and final season premieres Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 9/8c.

Netflix has released a trailer for its very different type of superhero series, Raising Dion.

The trailer introduces us to a young boy named Dion (played by JaSiah Young) and his mother Nicole (Alisha Wainwright) after the death of husband and father Mark (Michael B. Jordan) due to a mysterious storm. We go on to learn that there's more to that storm than meets the eye, and that goes for Dion too. And it becomes obvious when he is hit by a car and instead of getting run over seemingly teleports to the sidewalk.

Raising Dion hits Netflix on October 4th.

The site says the original pic will follow a headstrong young woman who joins a knight on his quest to destroy a world-threatening artefact before it falls into the wrong hands. The screenplay is being worked on by Matt Orton, who scripted 2018 MGM feature Operation Finale, starring Oscar Isaac, Ben Kingsley and Mélanie Laurent.

This one, still in early development, is being shepherded by the Disney live-action team with execs Jessica Virtue and Chaz Salembier overseeing. It is likely to be a theatrical project rather than a Disney+ title.

'BIRDS OF PREY' TAKES WING IN ITS FABULOUS FIRST POSTER

Source: DC Comics | Categories: DC | Comments (0) | E-mail Article | Add a Comment

The Birds of Prey are “heading” out!

We’ve been hit with so much DC movie news of late, it’s a wonder we’re not all seeing stars. If you are, it’s hopefully a result of recent casting news and not an actual, physical injury. Still, Harley Quinn’s here to ensure that if there do happen to be any objects orbiting around your head, they’re birds.

Yes, birds. As in Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn, the upcoming DC movie in which Margot Robbie returns to the role that made her a DC Extended Universe star. The 2020 film has released its first poster, which features a dazed looking Quinn surrounded by small, winged versions of the movie’s cast. It’s a fun, colorful concept that reminds us that when it comes to getting stuff done, Harley Quinn’s always preferred to wing it.

Roll call! Circling Harley’s noggin from left to right is Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya, Chris Messina as Victor Zsasz, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Ewan McGregor as Black Mask, Robbie as Harley, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary and Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain.

Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn lands in theaters February 7, 2020.
