RED SONJA BY MARK RUSSELL MARCHES ON TO YEAR TWO
11/26/19 @ 4:05 pm EST
Source: Dynamite | Categories: Dynamite | Comments (0) | E-mail Article | Add a Comment

Starting in February, Dynamite is proud to announce the Eisner-nominated Mark Russell is kicking off his second full year on the She-Devil with a Sword in the flagship Red Sonja, joined once more by the masterful Bob Q and the return of Jae Lee to Dynamite!

Following 12 issues and two tie-in one-shots, Red Sonja #13 starts with Sonja the Red in a an unfamiliar position. In the beginning of this epic, she was crowned Queen of Hyrkania, pitting her in battle against Dragan the Magnificent. As the two leaders pushed and pulled on the map, one must come out victorious. This glory is short-lived, as now in a time of relative peace and still on the throne of her conquered kingdom, Sonja must deal with the impossible part... ruling. With no food, infrastructure or plan, she must make some extremely difficult choices, compromises and alliances, lest her reign come to an anticlimactic end.

Mark Rusell details where the saga has been and where it's going, "The first year was about telling the story of Sonja leading her people against the world's most powerful emperor, as adapted into fantasy from the historical story of Queen Tomyris and Cyrus the Great. Being a huge fan of ancient history, it was an amazing opportunity to get to tell a longform and pretty freeform story adapted from the history books, which back then, were almost works of fantasy themselves."

"This next one is going to be different in that it's less about adapting stories from ancient history and more about moving the characters we've created forward. It's about the consequences of war, even for winners. About how all our actions have unintended consequences. Mirko was really great at establishing that sense of historic authenticity and the griminess of war, which was so important to those first issues. As the story moves beyond that initial source of inspiration, Bob will have to invent his visual approach to these settings and characters, but we've worked together on other projects and I have nothing but confidence in his ability"

Russell is joined in this quest by artist Bob Q once more for issues #13-18. Dynamite is proud to have brought Bob into comics, where he's worked on the critically acclaimed James Bond Origin, both The Lone Ranger and previous pieces of this Red Sonja run with Mark, and increasingly higher profile projects with Marvel such as Captain America, Uncanny X-Men and Fantastic Four.

"The last few months have been a game of mental ping pong, jumping back and forth between secret weapons bunkers, super heroes and police conspiracy to the political dealings of a barbarian queen and her stable of loyal consorts all on horseback… it’s a real challenge," said artist Bob Q. "In the few issues I’ve contributed to the series so far, I’ve already drawn cosmic space snake gods, ancient tree people, elephant warriors, and spooky wizards in an obsidian tower…. I can only imagine where Mark’s going take us next."

The absolute cherry on top is superstar Jae Lee (Batman/Superman, Inhumans) returning to Dynamite to lead the legion of talented cover artists attached to this series. He joins the likes of Amanda Conner, Joseph Michael Linsner, Bob Q himself and others.

"This is my chance to draw fantasy!," said cover artist Jae Lee. "Red Sonja is one of the most iconic fantasy characters ever created. I'm honored to be doing a run of covers for Dynamite. Despite the horror elements in my work, my true passion has always been to work on a fantasy book."

RED SONJA #13 will be solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors’ December 2019 Previews catalog, the premier source of merchandise for the comic book specialty market, and slated for release in February 2020. Comic book fans are encouraged to preorder copies of the issue with their local comic book retailers. It will also be available for individual customer purchase through digital platforms courtesy of Comixology, Kindle, iBooks, Google Play, Dynamite Digital, ComicsPlus, and more!

'KNIGHT RIDER' FEATURE IN THE WORKS FROM SPYGLASS MEDIA AND JAMES WAN

Deadline reports that Spyglass Media Group has teamed with Atomic Monster’s James Wan and Michael Clear to develop a film based on the 1980s classic action series Knight Rider. TJ Fixman, a former video game writer, is adapting the screenplay.

Created by Glen A. Larson, Knight Rider first aired on NBC from 1982-1986 and boosted David Hasselhoff’s career. It’s about a high-tech car named KITT that assists the mysterious crime-fighting driver Michael Knight (Hasselhoff).

The series amassed a significant cult following and spun more TV spinoffs, films, video games, books, and a Knight Rider convention known as KnightCon.

Plot details for this latest installment are being kept under wraps but reportedly it will be a present-day take that will maintain the anti-establishment tone of the original.

NOAH HAWLEY'S 'STAR TREK' ON THE BACK BURNER

Newly-installed motion picture group president Emma Watts is re-assessing the slate.

THR reports that Paramount’s newly-installed motion picture group president Emma Watts is re-assessing the slate. And one title under the microscope? Star Trek.

Three different versions of the classic sci-fi adventure are in development at the studio, including one by Quentin Tarantino. Another one seeks to reunite the cast of the reboot made by J.J. Abrams several years ago. And there's a third one being developed by Fargo TV creator Noah Hawley.

As Watts looks to see what should be a priority, sources tell THR that Hawley’s project is heading to the lower decks. One reason could be due to a plot centering around a virus that wipes out vast parts of the known universe, a topic that is not seen as a good or sensitive fit if you’re making escapist entertainment given the current coronavirus pandemic.

One question facing Trek now is whether or not Hawley moves on to other movie or TV worlds or will wait to be beamed back.
YOUR FIRST LOOK AT 'SLAUGHTERHOUSE-FIVE' BY RYAN NORTH AND ALBERT MONTEYS

Source: BOOM! Studios | Categories: MIsc | Comments (0) | E-mail Article | Add a Comment

BOOM! Studios today revealed a first look at a brand new graphic novel, SLAUGHTERHOUSE-FIVE. An American classic and one of the world’s seminal anti-war novels, Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five is faithfully presented in graphic novel form for the first time by Eisner Award-winning writer Ryan North (How to Invent Everything: A Survival Guide for the Stranded Time Traveler) and Eisner Award-nominated artist Albert Monteys (Universe!), available in stores September 2020.

Listen: Billy Pilgrim has...
...read Kilgore Trout
...opened a successful optometry business
...built a loving family
...witnessed the firebombing of Dresden
...traveled to the planet Tralfamadore
...met Kurt Vonnegut
...come unstuck in time.

Billy Pilgrim’s journey is at once a farcical look at the horror and tragedy of war where children are placed on the frontlines and die (so it goes), and a moving examination of what it means to be fallibly human.

Kurt Vonnegut’s black humor, satiric voice, and incomparable imagination first captured America’s attention in The Sirens of Titan in 1959, and established him as “a true artist” (The New York Times) with Cat’s Cradle in 1963. He was, as Graham Greene declared, “one of the best living American writers.” Kurt Vonnegut died in 2007.

SLAUGHTERHOUSE-FIVE is the latest release from BOOM! Studios’ award-winning Archaia imprint, home to inspiring graphic novels such as Big Black: Stand at Attica by Frank “Big Black” Smith, Jared Reinmuth, and Ameziane, Happiness Will Follow by Mike Hawthorne, We Served the People by Emei Burell, The Realist by Asaf Hanuka, Girl on Film by Cecil Castellucci and Vicky Leta, Melissa Duffy, V. Gagnon & Jon Berg, New World by David Jesus Vignolli, About Betty’s Boob by Vero Cazot and Julie Rocheleau, Waves by Ingrid Chabbert and Carole Maurel, The Grand Abyss Hotel by Marcos Prior and David Rubín, and more.

Print copies of SLAUGHTERHOUSE-FIVE will be available for sale on September 9, 2020 at local comic book shops (use comicshoplocator.com to find the one nearest you), September 15, 2020 at bookstores or at the BOOM! Studios webstore. Digital copies can be purchased from content providers, including comiXology, iBooks, Google Play, and Madefire.

DC COMICS BRINGING 'GEN 13' BACK TO PRINT

DC Comics Bringing Gen 13 Back to Print

Wildstorm's Gen 13, which debuted as a massive hit and helped shape the '90s comics marketplace, is coming back into print, at least in part, with a new Deluxe Edition hardcover of much of J. Scott Campbell's run on the series due in 2021. Despite its success -- and bestselling crossovers with Superman, Spider-Man, The Maxx, and others -- Gen 13 has been largely sidelined since DC shuttered the WildStorm imprint around the launch of The New 52 in 2011. Characters from the comic appeared in some New 52 titles, but have since vanished from the DC Universe again, and Gen 13 is not even available digitally.

The new volume, Gen 13: Starting Over, will reportedly hit store shelves in May of 2021. It will be a reprinting of a previous collected edition released in 2002, but with new trade dress and a new cover.

The new cover, though, won't mark new artwork. It's repurposed from Gen 13 #5 by Campbell and Alex Garner. (via ComicBook)

In Batman #93, class was definitely in session and Punchline took Harley Quinn to school in a no holds barred throwdown for the ages! Although she was left for dead, reports of Harley’s demise were “greatly exaggerated” (with apologies to Mark Twain) and she’s the only one left to help Batman recover from the effects of the strongest Joker toxin attack yet! And as she helps him overcome his wild hallucinations, Punchline returns to finish the job she started and you can bet Harley will be looking for some serious payback.

Here’s a preview of Batman #98, on sale Tuesday, September 1!

ED BRUBAKER AND SEAN PHILLIPS TO LAUNCH GRAPHIC NOVEL SERIES 'RECKLESS'

Source: Hollywood Reporter | Categories: Image | Comments (0) | E-mail Article | Add a Comment

The private eye series will be released by Image Comics starting in December.

Fresh from last month’s release of Pulp, their 1930s-set graphic novel from Image Comics, Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips are ready to unveil what might be their most ambitious collaboration to date: a series of three graphic novels to be released across the next year, starting with December’s Reckless.

Set in 1980s Los Angeles, Reckless centers on a private eye called Ethan Reckless who’ll take care of problems … for a price. But his latest case hits too close to home, when a familiar face from his own days as a student radical comes calling for help.

The format of the series beginning with Reckless may be an unfamiliar one for North American comics readers, with each installment being released as a full-length hardcover graphic novel; Reckless will run 144 pages. (via THR)

Reckless will be released by Image Comics digitally and in comic book stores Dec. 16, and in bookstores Dec. 22. The second volume in the series is targeted for an April 2021 release.
