, discover the secret history of Mal and his mother, what that will mean for the rest of the ‘verse...and a new brewing war to end all wars. FIREFLY: THE OUTLAW MA REYNOLDS #1

was named the Best Ongoing Series of 2007 by Wizard Magazine and Pak’s Magneto Testament

"One of the ongoing joys of working on the FIREFLY
comics has been the incredible room Joss Whedon and company have given us to explore and expand on the 'Verse they created. OUTLAW MA REYNOLDS
may be the biggest example of that -- Malcolm Reynolds talks about his mom in the television series, but we've never seen her until the comics. And now we've unspooling an epic tale of the badass outlaw Ma Reynolds and shaking Mal's status quo to the core in a story that truly feels like it matters to this world and these characters,” said writer Greg Pak. “It's a huge pleasure and honor to build on that sweet, loopy Firefly vibe that I love so much. Huge thanks to Joss, all our creative collaborators, and especially all the readers who have made all this possible.”
Davide Gianfelice was born in Milan, Italy in 1977. He is a comic book artist who has worked for Vertigo on the acclaimed first run of Northlanders
and Greek Street
. Gianfelice has also worked on various comic book series including Nightwing
for DC Comics, Age of Apocalypse
for Marvel Entertainment, Conan the Barbarian
for Dark Horse, and Jupiter's Circle
for Image Comics. In his spare time, he enjoys playing sports, cooking and travelling around the world
"I'm very excited to illustrate the story of a character as interesting as Maude Reynolds from the Firefly
universe. It's been a very fun experience working with Greg to bring Ma Reynolds, Malcolm Reynolds, and the rest of the crew to life as they cause mayhem throughout the galaxy." said artist Davide Gianfelice.
Created by Whedon and set 500 years in the future in the wake of a universal civil war, FIREFLY
centers on the crew of Serenity, a small transport spaceship that doesn't have a planet to call home. Captain Malcolm "Mal" Reynolds, a defeated soldier who opposed the unification of the planets by the totalitarian Alliance, will undertake any job — legal or not — to stay afloat and keep his crew fed. Thrust together by necessity but staying together out of loyalty, these disparate men and women are seeking adventure and the good life, but face constant challenges on the new frontier, such as avoiding capture by the Alliance, and evading the dangers you find on the fringes of the ‘verse.
“Maude Reynolds is tough as nails, smart as a whip, and if you can believe it, an even bigger revolutionary than the son she raised as a Browncoat. So what happens when this unstoppable force of a woman meets the immovable stubbornness of her son? Enough sparks to jump start a war,” said Jeanine Schaefer, Executive Editor, BOOM! Studios. “Mal and the crew will have their hands full dealing with their latest bounty, THE OUTLAW MA REYNOLDS
, and we can’t wait to show fans what happens next!”FIREFLY: THE OUTLAW MA REYNOLDS #1

GWEN STACY FACES HER GREATEST CHALLENGE YET IN 'GHOST-SPIDER' #701/24/20 @ 4:15 pm EST
BOOM! Studios announced today a new original graphic novel, THE SACRIFICE OF DARKNESS, from New York Times
bestselling author Roxane Gay, writer Tracy Lynne Oliver, artist Rebecca Kirby, and colorist James Fenner, adapting Gay’s New York Times bestselling short story “We Are the Sacrifice of Darkness” into a full-length graphic novel and expanding the short story about a tragic event that forever bathes the world in darkness, available in October 2020.
Follow a woman and a man’s powerful journey through this new landscape as they discover love, family, and the true light in a world seemingly robbed of any. As they challenge the world’s notions of identity, guilt, and survival, they find that no matter the darkness, there remain sources of hope that can pierce the veil.
Roxane Gay’s writing appears in Best American Nonrequired Reading 2018, Best American Mystery Stories 2014, Best American Short Stories 2012, Best Sex Writing 2012, Harper’s Bazaar, A Public Space, McSweeney’s, Tin House, Oxford American, American Short Fiction, Virginia Quarterly Review,

“Some stories don't leave you and such was the case with my short story ‘We are the Sacrifice of Darkness.’ When BOOM! Studios approached me about writing a graphic novel, I immediately knew what kind of story I wanted to tell--one about family and sorrow, faith that survives in a world of darkness, true love and an indelible bond between two people with the world against them,” said author Roxane Gay. “It has been a thrill to be able to bring breadth and depth to the world I created in my short story, and to be able to do so with one of my favorite writers, Tracy Lynne Oliver. She is an amazing collaborator who always pushes me creatively. We are excited to have this graphic novel out in the world later this year.”
Tracy Lynne Oliver is a writer based in Los Angeles. She has been published online at a variety of places such as Medium, Fanzine and Occulum. Her story, This Weekend
was chosen to be in Best Microfiction 2019
. This is her first graphic novel adaptation.
“‘We are the Sacrifice of Darkness’ was one of my favorite Roxane Gay stories, so I was more than thrilled with the opportunity to transform it into a graphic novel format,” said writer Tracy Lynne Oliver. “I once again fell in love with the characters and their struggles and yearning for love, warmth and light in this dark, cold world they were thrust into. I am so excited for readers to see this story brought to life in such a visually stunning way.”
Rebecca Kirby is a comic artist and illustrator based out of Philadelphia best known for her original comics, Biopsy
, which have been featured on Vice and Waves
, featured in Fantagraphics Now: The New Comics Anthology #4.
“It's been an incredible experience working with everyone as we create a graphic novel full of striking contrasts and tender moments splashed across the page,” said artist Rebecca Kirby. “I've had a great time illustrating the beautiful story that Roxane and Tracy have crafted, and I hope fans will have just as great an experience reading it.”
THE SACRIFICE OF DARKNESS is the latest release from BOOM! Studios’ award-winning Archaia imprint, home to inspiring graphic novels such as Big Black: Stand at Attica

“It’s an honor to bring new dimension into Roxane Gay’s story, alongside Tracy, Rebecca, and James who have really evolved into an exciting, singular narrative voice,” said Dafna Pleban, Senior Editor, BOOM! Studios. “Grappling with questions of hope, culpability and identity, the graphic novel medium brings to life a world struggling to move on with a visual intensity and specificity that will make for a whole new reading experience for devoted Roxane Gay fans and new readers alike.”
Print copies of THE SACRIFICE OF DARKNESS will be available for sale in October 2020 at local comic book shops (use comicshoplocator.com

BEHOLD THE SECRETS TO THE NEXT GREAT MUTANT MYSTERY AT THE STARLIGHT CITADEL!01/24/20 @ 4:05 pm EST
The young prince is returning to the forest.
In the latest move to turn its animated classics into live-action features, Disney has set its sights on one of its most storied: Bambi
The studio has hired Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Captain Marvel, Tomb Raider
) and Lindsey Beer (Sierra Burgess Is a Loser, Chaos Walking
) to pen the screenplay for the live-action remake.
Depth of Field, the production banner run by Chris and Paul Weitz and Andrew Miano and which is coming off the success of indie darling The Farewell,
will produce the new iteration.
The original movie, released in 1942, told the story of a young fawn named Bambi as he learns his place in the forest. With his two best friends, a rabbit named Thumper and a skunk named Flower, Bambi comes of age as he faces the joys and heartache — cue the loss of a parent — of growing up.
The film received three Oscar nominations — best song, best score and best sound — but was not initially held in high esteem as it is in modern times.
Insiders say the studio views Bambi
as a type of companion piece to its remakes The Jungle Book and The Lion King
, which were not live-action per se but certainly made to look that way. The two, both hits (Lion King
generated $1.65 billion when it was released last year), were made using envelope-pushing CG technology to create ground-breaking photo-realistic and immersive worlds of nature. The studio is cognizant that Bambi
is less epic in scope and story and is not aiming to shoehorn a larger narrative onto the classic tale. (via THR

VAULT ANNOUNCES 'HUNDRED WOLVES' BY NOVELIST MYKE COLE AND ARTIST TONY AKINS01/24/20 @ 8:49 am EST
Shooting of Disney+’s Obi-Wan Kenobi
has been pushed to next year following the news that show’s writer is being replaced.
“I think we start shooting early next year as opposed to summer this year,” Ewan McGregor, who will reprise his role of Obi-Wan Kenobi in the series, told Variety
at the Birds of Prey
fan event at Hollywood and Highland. “I think the scripts are great. They’re in really good shape. They want them to be better. I think we keep our same airdate. All good.”
Sources told the site just a couple of hours before the event that Disney+ and Lucasfilm are looking for new writers following the departure of scribe Hossein Amini.
McGregor insisted the upheaval is not as “dramatic” as fans may think. “I didn’t realize until we got here tonight and everybody is going, ‘Oh, my god!’” McGregor said. “But it’s not really as dramatic as it might seem.”

'WALKING DEAD' MIDSEASON PREMIERE CLIP RELEASED01/24/20 @ 8:46 am EST
Vault Comics is thrilled to announce HUNDRED WOLVES
, a historically inspired fantasy comic series co-created by award-winning novelist Myke Cole (The Sacred Throne Trilogy, The Shadow Ops Trilogy) and master artist Tony Akins (Fables, Hellblazer, Wonder Woman), with colors Vladimir Popov, letters by Jim Campbell, and designed by Tim Daniel.
HUNDRED WOLVES is set during the Siege of Vienna in 1683. Andrei and Oksana have left the Cossack band to raise their daughter on a farm they hold from the noble Count Ostoja, but the raiding life isn’t done with them. Both the Hundred Wolves and the couple’s new liege lord wish to employ their deadly skills—and neither will take no for an answer.
“The Siege of Vienna in 1683 is one of the most dramatic, visually arresting, and movie-ready stories in the history of warfare," said Myke Cole. "It arguably decided the future of the European and Turkish worlds both. And almost nobody has even heard of it."
"I only discovered it by chance (being a historian, I chase these things) and was immediately electrified," added Cole. "It is such an amazing story, a heroic defense in the face of arguably hopeless odds and a stirring, last-minute rescue from an unexpected quarter. I wanted to tell it to the world."
"As a historian, I can convey the drama in text, but no words can properly convey the sheer visual splendor - the tossing wings of the Polish knights, the fluttering white hoods of the Turkish janissaries, the sparking kick of matchlock muskets sounding the death knell of the mounted knight and heralding the dawn of modern warfare. And above all, the pluck and swagger of the Cossacks, with their punk-rock haircuts, flashing sabers, and belly-laughing defiance of imperial authority," said Cole.
"The HUNDRED WOLVES pitch document landed right where it needed to land: my lap," added Tony Akins." I’ll just say it was kind of like a mix of romance and inspiration, my initial reaction to the story and setting. It had everything, and it was heavily based in history, and I love histories. So yeah, I’m that brother from the South Side of Chicago who’s drawing a story about a family in 17th Century Ukraine who are caught between a rock and a hard place. That translates to some of my own experiences as an American, and particularly as an African-American."
The full synopsis of HUNDRED WOLVES can be found below:
"The Hundred Wolves are bloody-handed terrors of the steppe. From celebrated author Myke Cole (The Sacred Throne Trilogy, The Shadow Ops Trilogy) and venerable artist Tony Akins (Fables, Hellblazer, Wonder Woman) comes a story of war and family, blending historical fiction with a touch of fantasy."
HUNDRED WOLVES #1 will hit store shelves in April 2020. The first issue will drop with a special Pulp & Paint variant cover by Nathan Gooden & Tim Daniel.
