AWARD-WINNING SERIES 'SYPHON' GETS A SECOND VOLUME
07/26/23 @ 10:40 am EST
Source: Image Comics | Categories: Top Cow | Comments (0) | E-mail Article | Add a Comment

Syphon, a supernatural noir comic and 2022 Ringo Award Winner, is releasing its second volume with Top Cow Productions this November. Creator and writer Mohsen Ashraf continues the series in a new four-issue story, joined by co-writer Arish Akanda and new artist Thomas Hedglen.

Syphon Volume 2 follows “supernatural empath” Sylas, wielder of an ancient power to sense and siphon away pain from others, as he struggles to navigate his purpose and the moral ambiguity of his newfound power. He is joined by Livia, a scientist and trauma researcher exploring the fringe of the Syphon-verse.

The series unveils new characters and settings, including a Syphon temple lost in the Amazon - brimming with deep lore of the power - and a long-forgotten threat reawakened. Ashraf describes Volume II as a “Temple of Doom style psychedelic thriller delving into the depths of mental health.”

“I’m very excited to continue the story of Sylas and Livia in Syphon Volume 2. We’re able to explore more of the power, get deeper with the main characters, and start to ask the tough questions: What is the purpose of pain? What is the right way to heal from it? Is there a right way at all?” Ashraf says of his latest volume.

“I’m a big fan of grounded supernatural and Syphon has a fresh take on empaths. Volume 2 takes things to a whole new level. I dig it. Already looking forward to Volume 3 and beyond.” Top Cow President Matt Hawkins adds.

Co-writer Arish Akanda shares, "In 1996, I picked up the first issue of The Darkness from Top Cow and was immediately hooked. Almost 30 years later, to be able to work on Syphon - a story of empathy and the ethics of having the power to manipulate emotion - for the very same publisher…absolutely serendipitous."

Syphon Volume 1 earned critical acclaim for its dazzling illustrations and colors that blended moody neon overtones with an otherworldly atmosphere. The series was nominated for three Ringo Awards in 2022, including Best Series and Best Artist, and was awarded Favorite Hero.

“I’m so honored to be working with Top Cow to deliver a bracing and dynamic vision in this second volume,” remarks artist Thomas Hedglen.

Warner Bros. Now, Hobie Brown returns, and in a world without Norman Osborn, SPIDER-PUNK REIGNS! This ain't no victory lap though – as Hobie and team try to rebuild society, Justin Hammer and Doctor Otto Octavius have other plans... like introducing the world to new Spider-Slaying Sentinels! On writing the series, Cody told IGN, “It feels so friggin' cool to dive back into Earth-138 with Justin and explore the world of Hobie and the Spider-band even more! Noah Hawley Claims The Upcoming Alien TV Series Is A

The current landscape of prestige TV series means we don't always know the difference between a limited series and an ongoing storyline, and while we know we can expect one season of storytelling from Noah Hawley's upcoming Alien program, the showrunner recently addressed how he's approaching the overall length of the story. "There's definitely a place that I'm going, which I had with [Marvel's] Legion, also. I just don't necessarily know how long it's gonna take me to get there, and on some level, I don't want to know too much," Hawley recalled."There's definitely a place that I'm going, which I had with Legion, also. I just don't necessarily know how long it's gonna take me to get there, and on some level, I don't want to know too much," Hawley told Collider. "Once you remove the play and the potential and the imagination, that's why I've stopped outlining anything. First of all, no one ever said, 'That's the best outline I ever read.' And second of all, it's just a different part of your brain, honestly. It's a different part of your brain that thinks about story that way versus the part of your brain that is writing the story. What we do is we get the writers in a room and we've got the whiteboards and we start big picture." It doesn't seem as though the project will embrace an anthology premise like Hawley's Fargo, which has allowed multiple disconnected stories to be told in that world. With the project likely to have a relatively large budget, due to its sci-fi themes, the length of the series will likely be dependent upon how popular it is and whether FX opts to pursue the costly endeavor. Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant #4 hit stands today, delivering the conclusion to Kamala Khan’s first mission as a member of the X-Men! The four-issue limited series will continue to cement Ms. Marvel’s role in the X-Men mythos while staying true to the character’s roots and celebrating what makes her such a standout hero in the Marvel Universe. Her upcoming adventure will take her back to Jersey City, where she’ll have to confront another Fall of X related threat while dealing with the fallout of being outed as a mutant. Balancing both will bring Ms. Marvel into contact with more X-Men (as well as iconic X-Men villains) and reunite her with key supporting players of her own, including a fan-favorite ex. This time around, co-writers Vellani and Pirzada will be joined by Scott Godlewski, who made his Marvel debut in the recent Alpha Flight series, while Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant artist Carlos Gómez provides the series’ covers. Kamala Khan is used to being a hometown hero – there’s no way her community would turn on her just because she’s a mutant, right? …Right?? “It's been an absolute joy and privilege to get to co-write Ms. Marvel with Iman Vellani, who has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that she is THE voice of Ms. Marvel on the page just as much as she is on the screen,” Pirzada said. “We are excited to report that Kamala's mutant journey will continue on in MS. MARVEL: MUTANT MENACE. It will be Kamala's most dangerous ride yet.” Check out the debut issue’s cover now and stay tuned for more news about MS. MARVEL: MUTANT MENACE in the months ahead.

Deadpool 3' Production to Start Before Thanksgiving as Strike Ends

Disney has confirmed that Deadpool 3 is officially filming again. Today, during a Disney Town Hall, Disney Entertainment co-chair Alan Bergman said that the Ryan Reynolds three-quel is back in production. The movie has a lot riding on it as the MCU will feature only one cinematic offering now in 2024. Captain America: Brave New World got moved to 2025, and that means Deadpool 3 is the big summer blockbuster that Disney will be hanging its hat on. There's more than a little room for optimism, though. Deadpool 3 finally unites Reynolds' Merc with a Mouth and Hugh Jackman's Wolverine, but for the first time in a Marvel Studios title. But that won't be the only source of fan hype as the movie nears completion. A lot of the Fox X-Men cast have been rumored to cameo in this one. In fact, a lot of the Fox Marvel stars have been rumored or confirmed to be along for the ride as well. Elektra star Jennifer Garner is already aboard and the whispers about other famous faces turning up for at least a second are inescapable on the Internet. Also of note for MCU fans are promises of The Multiverse Saga continuing to develop as the Fox Marvel characters are integrated. (via ComicBook.com)

Robert Eggers‘ long-in-the-works remake of “Nosferatu” will haunt theaters next Christmas.Focus Features has scheduled the movie for Dec. 25, 2024. On its current release date, “Nosferatu” will land on the big screen a few days after Disney’s “Lion King” prequel “Mufasa” and Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” both of which open on Dec. 20.Eggers wrote and directed this take on “Nosferatu,” which features an ensemble cast of Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, Simon McBurney and Willem Dafoe. It’s the second remake of F. W. Murnau’s iconic 1922 Dracula-inspired silent movie, following Werner Herzog’s 1979 film “Nosferatu the Vampyre.” The new imagining of the cinematic classic is described as a “gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing untold horror in its wake.” Eggers’ vision was first announced in 2015 and, at one point, was going to star Harry Styles.
