YOUR FIRST LOOK AT 'THE SACRIFICE OF DARKNESS' GRAPHIC NOVEL08/14/20 @ 9:40 pm EST
Jim Lee, the superstar artist from the 1990s who rose through the executive ranks of DC to reach the top rungs of the company, has had better weeks.
Monday, WarnerMedia enacted deep and painful companywide layoffs. DC, the home of heroes such as Batman and Wonder Woman, saw the scythe cut 20 percent of its staff, with many senior editors let go and a reorganization implemented that sent shockwaves through not just the company but through the comic and DC fan community.
“This week has been a really heavy difficult time not just for me, but for the entire organization,” Lee told The Hollywood Reporter
. "We’ve said goodbye to people that have been huge contributors and who have helped define and make DC what it is today.”
As soon as the layoffs news hit Monday, the rumors soon began in earnest: AT&T, which acquired Time Warner in 2018 to form WarnerMedia, wants out of the comics business. Other rumors suggested DC will no longer put out comics and that Lee would be demoted from his role as publisher and chief creative officer.
So Lee is in the midst of a reorganization that will take the next two or three months to play out while the team is still putting on the finishing touches on Fandome, WarmerMedia’s blockbuster fan event set for Aug. 22.
“We are still in the business of publishing comics,” Lee said, adding that there is no work being halted.
Yes, there will be more Batman — John Ridley, who won an Oscar for penning 12 Years a Slave
, is writing a Batman mini-series (“It will have a huge impact on the rest of the line,” Lee says) — and there will also be the return of Milestone, a label that features under-represented heroes and creators.
And does Lee still have the title of publisher? "Yes," the artist-turned-exec responded.

THRDISCOVER THE TRUE STORY OF TRAILBLAZER RACHEL CARSON IN 'SEEN' GRAPHIC NOVEL SERIES08/14/20 @ 9:31 pm EST
reports that Zack Snyder’s zombie movie Army of the Dead
may be done shooting, but it doesn’t mean a new actor can’t be added to the roll call.
Tig Notaro, the actress and stand-up comic who recently appeared in Star Trek: Discovery
, has joined the Netflix movie and will replace Chris D’Elia, the comedian who has been accused of sexually harassing underage girls.
The movie, which has an all-star international cast led by Dave Bautista, wrapped principal photography late last year and had been in post-production when the pandemic hit American shores, prompting a lockdown in Hollywood. Snyder, who co-wrote and directed the movie, worked with post houses to keep the process going.
The movie will now undergo a quick round of reshoots to incorporate Notaro’s role. Due to actors being already dispersed post-filming and due to pandemic restrictions, the incorporation will be a combination of techniques, from actually reshooting scenes opposite an acting partner to using green screen and CG technology to blend her in.Dead
takes place after a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas, centering on a group of mercenaries who take the ultimate gamble, venturing into the quarantine zone to pull off the greatest heist ever attempted.

DYNAMITE OFFERS DEEP DISCOUNTS FOR RETAILERS THIS FALL/HOLIDAY SEASON08/14/20 @ 10:13 am EST
With a new holiday special, Star Wars is tapping into its kitschy yuletide past with irreverence and A Christmas Carol
Premiering Nov. 17 on the Disney+ streaming service, The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special
brings beloved heroes like Rey, Finn and Poe Dameron back together to celebrate Life Day, the Star Wars-y holiday introduced way back in the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special
that first aired on CBS Nov. 17, 1978.
The new project features animated building-block versions of characters throughout “Star Wars” history and pays homage to the special'sdisco-era predecessor, which has become a so-bad-it's-good cult favorite as fans have found it via video-sharing sites and bootleg videos.
“We wanted to give a wink and a nod to the original,” executive producer Josh Rimes says, adding the new 45-minute holiday special was inspired by It’s a Wonderful Life, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, Christmas Vacation
and old Burl Ives musical cheer.
The Lego holiday special, which Rimes teases will feature a few Star Wars movie actors reprising their roles, catches up with the cast after the events of last year’s saga-closing Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
. Rey and droid pal BB-8 head off on a quest to gain a deeper knowledge of the Force, but their visit to a mysterious Jedi Temple sends them careening through time and space. Rey interacts with Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda and other characters in some of the franchise’s most beloved moments, as they try to return in time for a Life Day feast with her friends on Chewbacca’s Wookiee home world of Kashyyyk. THE DARK KNIGHT SALUTED WITH DYNAMITE'S OCTOBER VARIANTS08/14/20 @ 10:11 am EST
Dynamite announces an extensive slate of sales for retailer partners on graphic novels and more this coming season in October and November, right before the holidays.
Across nearly the entire line, graphic novels, statues, trading cards and other items will be discounted significantly for retailers to get prepared for the holiday season. Titles included will feature fan-favorite stories from acclaimed creators on Vampirella, Red Sonja, The Boys, John Wick, Elvira and much more. Fans can expect to see some of these exciting goodies at their local comic shops to grab themselves or for a loved one. More details will be shared with retailers soon.
"Retailers are the lifeblood of this industry and 2020 has been a challenging year for everyone," said Nick Barrucci, Dynamite CEO and Publisher. "During the shutdown early into the pandemic and continuing, we offered several sales across all our product categories and properties. Retailers were able to order our perennial graphic novels at incredible discounts, and our marketing team assisted them with the hooks and stories attached to the product to result in sales while most stories had to experiment with curbside pickup and mail-order options. As the crucial holiday season approaches, still with some uncertainty in some areas, we're re-upping our efforts in this area."

Coming in October, Dynamite pays homage to one of the cornerstones and early successes of comics with variant covers inspired by the dark detective.
A top-tier gang of artists contribute to the special set, and they are no cowardly lot. Across six of Dynamite's top titles, vampires, barbarians, Martian queens, and pinup queens reenact iconic covers and artwork from throughout the prolific career of everyone's favorite caped crusader. Will Robson, Jonathan Lau, Vincenzo Federici, and Stephen Mooney answer the signal in the sky for this fun project. Kike J. Diaz and Andrew Dalhouse join as colorists with Robson and Lau, respectively, forming their dynamic duos, while Federici and Mooney color themselves.
Of course one must homage the original foundation of it all. And from one bat-themed comic hero to another, Vampirella
#15 portrays the iconic Detective Comics
#27. Matching her new title's Hollywood connection, Bettie Page
#4 is a natural fit for the theatrical Detective Comics
#38, which debuted the boy wonder. Showing her boundless strength and cunning, the She-Devil With a Sword employs some over-the-knee back-breaking as Red Sonja
#20 mirrors Batman
#497 by the legendary Kelley Jones. Vampi and Sonja stand up to the spotlight, as Vampirella/Red Sonja
#12 bows out with a tribute to Batman
#9. Fitting with their shared identities of fantastical imagined technology and architecture, Dejah Thoris
#9 pulls Gotham by Gaslight
as a wild card. Last but certainly not least, a timeless moment from Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli's Batman: Year One
jumps out at readers on DIE!namite
"I really enjoyed doing these covers! The bat-verse is my favourite corner of the comic book world, so getting the opportunity to put my own spin on some iconic covers was an absolute treat," said Will Robson. "I really love Vampirella and Red Sonja, so that was an added bonus being able to draw them for the first time too!"
"Doing homage covers can be tricky and challenging. One cannot force Superman to pose like Spider-Man," said Jonathan Lau. "It takes some artistic freedom and ingenuity to get the results that make readers recognize a homage and at the same time be suitable for the character(s) to pull off. Only the readers will tell if I was successful. But I had fun nonetheless!"
"Like most people, I love Batman so much! When I was a kid I watched the whole animated series and I read a lot of his comics," said artist Vincenzo Federici. "So it was amazing when the editor asked me to draw this cover! I tried to keep the poses, expressions, and general feelings of the original characters, but also using my own art style."
All of these covers are solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors' August Previews for October on-sale. Fans are encouraged to preorder copies with their Local Comic Shops.
