DF Interview: Tim Seeley returns iconic characters to comics in ‘Hack/Slash: Body Bags’ By Byron Brewer Jason Pearson's legendary creations return to comics! When slasher hunters Cassie Hack and Vlad roll into Terminus, Georgia, in search of a killer, they're instantly up to their asses in bounty hunters! Meanwhile, Mack "Clownface" Delgado needs to school his daughter Panda in the ways of Bodybagging, and it needs to happen quickly, which means a private school lock-in for baggers-in-training… AND a teen-slicing slasher. Yeah, big knives, short skirts, and swear words are gonna start flying. Worlds collide in the most twisted crossover of 2024 that reintroduces the cult-favorite crew of Body Bags! From Image Comics comes Hack/Slash: Body Bags by writer Tim Seeley with art by Steve Kurth and OG H/S illustrator Stefano Caselli. I see the Seeley name, I am all in! I sat down with Tim and this is what the scribe told me. Byron Brewer: Tim, why is it time to return to the world of Cassie Hack and Hack/Slash? Was it a certain itch you had, or unfinished business (like a crossover with the fondly-remembered Body Bags)? And you’re reunited for this one with longtime Hack/Slash artist Stefano Caselli! Tim Seeley: The short answer is, it was a 20th anniversary present to Stefano from me. Body Bags is Ste's favorite comic, ever, and we've been doing Hack/Slash for two full decades, so I thought I'd treat him, and myself. But also because we really thought the world needed to be reintroduced to Body Bags, because it's too awesome not to be seen. Byron: For those who have been under a rock (and who could blame them?), could you reintroduce readers to the cult-favorite crew from Body Bags? For instance: What exactly ARE “the ways of Bodybagging”? Tim Seeley: In Jason Pearson's original telling, Body Bags takes place in the city of Terminus, Georgia, where the laws make it so "independent contractors" are tasked by everyone from the police to lil' ol' ladies to capture or kill crooks. It's basically a dystopian version of Atlanta with aspects of cyberpunk and the Wild West. The main characters, Mack "Clowface" Delgado and Panda, are a daddy-daughter Body Bagger team. Byron: Likewise, give us a little history on Cassie and Vlad. Have they been up to any particularly pertinent goings-on as of late? Tim Seeley: Cassie and Vlad hunt slashers – the undead killers who slash up teens and others. Most recently, they teamed up with a bunch of Image superheroes to stop the resurrection of the slasher bloodline. Unfortunately, they failed, and the slasher bloodline has come to Terminus. Byron: Can you give us a little elevator pitch, a summary of where we are headed in this limited series? Tim Seeley: A slasher comes to Terminus. Cassie and Vlad go in for the kill. They run afoul of Mack and Panda. All hell breaks loose. Byron: Clue readers into a little background of the killer Cassie and Vlad are hunting, whom I am assuming (always a danger with a Seeley book, LOL) is the major big-bad. Tim Seeley: Well, I want to keep some of it a secret, but our killer is a character with deep ties to Body Bags, and with a real hate-on for Panda. Byron: Talk about the awesome art of Stefano Caselli and Steve Kurth. Tim Seeley: Stefano is the ORIGINAL Hack/Slash artist. He really wanted to draw this book. But he has a monthly gig at Marvel doing Ultimate Black Panther. So, to ease the burden and keep it fun, we brought in Steve Kurth who Stefano used to work with back in the DDP G.I. Joe days and is also a college buddy of mine. Steve is doing layouts and backgrounds, while Stefano draws all the characters. It looks great! Byron: How cool is that??… Tim, what other projects you are working on can you tell readers about? Tim Seeley: Finishing up Batman: Brave and The Bold and Local Man.
