"Spider-Man"
and "X-Men" get new
collector set DVDs
He’s
been called spectacular and amazing, but with the upcoming
release of the "Spider-Man" DVD,
you might just have to begin referring to the wall-crawler
as groundbreaking.
With
two disks full of extras, the new "Spider-Man"
DVD, available Nov. 1 everywhere for a suggested price
of $28.96, sets a new standard for superhero DVD excellence.
The "Spider-Man" film’s over-$800
million gross proved the Webhead’s a hit with
longtime comic book fans and comic book novices alike
and the "Spider-Man" DVD looks like
it will capitalize on Spidey’s growing popularity.

So popular, in fact, to celebrate the release
of the DVD -- Dynamic Forces
President Nick Barrucci
will be featuring a web full of Spider-Man product on HSN
Friday, November 1! Look for the shows at 1 AM ET
(that’s 10 PM Halloween night west coasters!) and 10PM.
The film is just the beginning of the remarkable
elements contained on the new DVD. The commentary track with
director Sam Raimi
("Evil Dead"), Kirsten
Dunst (Mary Jane Watson),
producer Lauren Ziskin
and co-producer Grant Curtis
is funny, insightful and a great addition for fans who’ve
already seen the film a few times and now want to hear what
the people who made "Spider-Man" have to
say about the process.
But even better than listening to a commentary
is making your own, and thanks to Sony,
now you can! If you have a DVD-Rom drive on your computer,
you and your friends can actually record your own commentary
to go with "Spider-Man" and then play it back for
anyone insane enough to want to listen to it. Hands down,
this is the greatest DVD function for movie fans since DVD
virtual porn (and we all know how popular that is!)
There’s literally something for everyone
on the two-disc set. For hardcore comic book fans, there’s
even a "Comic Book Artists Pin-Up" section
on the DVD with comic book greats such as 100 Bullets cover
artist Dave Johnson,
Mike Allred
(X-Statix), John
Cassaday (Captain America),
David Mack
(Kabuki), Jae
Lee (Inhumans), Alex
Maleev (Daredevil) and many
more contributing. There’s also an added documentary
entitled "Spider-Man: The Mythology of the 21st Century,"
which includes interviews with Spider-Man co-creator Stan
Lee, Marvel
Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada,
Spider-Man editor Axel Alonso
and many other creators who’ve been influential in Spider-Man’s
growth over the last 40 years.
Overall, the DVD would have been a must-buy
for any comic book fanboy, but with all the extras on this
badboy, you’re a fool if you don’t run out and
get one ASAP. Still not enough for you? Well, Sony was thinking
of that. Even in Hollywood, the power of the fanboy is known
and respected, so the studio’s also doing a special
edition collector’s gift set that’ll have comic
book-craving hot shots beating each other bloody for a copy.
In addition
to the normal "Spider-Man" DVD, there’s
also the "Spider-Man Limited Edition Collector’s
Gift Set" ($49.95) that has just about everything
a Spider-Man fan wants—from comics, to a movie still,
to a chat with Stan Lee. Including the normal two-disc "Spider-Man"
set full of extras, the Gift Set also includes "Stan
Lee’s Mutants, Marvels & Monsters" DVD
featuring director and comic book guru Kevin
Smith (Green Arrow) interviewing
the Father of Marvel Comics about his many creations and collaborations
with giants like Spider-Man co-creator Steve
Ditko and Hulk co-creator Jack
Kirby. The Collector’s Gift Set also
includes a reprint of Spider-Man’s first appearance
in Amazing Fantasy #15 and a film cell personally
selected by Raimi.
Overall, both "Spider-Man"
DVDs get props for packing so much info that fans will have
a tough time getting through everything they want to see.
Deciding between the commentary tracks, Easter egg featurettes
of early CGI animations and audition tapes by "Spider-Man"
star Tobey Maguire
won’t be easy. But rest assured—it’ll be
hard to find a superhero DVD better than these sets anytime
soon. But then, that’s not stopping "X-Men"
and "X-Men 2" director Bryan
Singer from trying.
With "X-Men 2" hitting
theaters May 3, 2003, Singer and company have produced a new
DVD of the original "X-Men" film—which
ignited the comic movie trend and paved the way for "Spider-Man"—titled
"X-Men 1.5 Collector’s Edition."
While there’s still no inclusion of
the director’s cut of the film that fans have been begging
for, the new Collector’s Edition does boast some amazing
features for fans.
Disc one of the two-disc set features a new
introduction by Singer, 24 amazing deleted scenes and a long-awaited
audio commentary track by Singer, Patrick
Stewart (Professor Xavier),
Ian McKellen
(Magneto) and Hugh
Jackman (Wolverine).
Available Feb. 11 for $26.95, the set’s
second disc contains another introduction by Singer, the featurettes
"The Making Of X-Men: Part 1 (Origin Of The X-Men)",
"Part 2 (The Uncanny Suspects)", "Part
3 (X-Factor)", "Part 4 (Shooting X-Men)"
and "Part 5 (Remembering The X-Men)," and
a bundle of promotional items including three trailers, 13
TV spots, an "X-Men 2" teaser trailer and
a short "Behind the Scenes of X-Men 2"
special.
Trying to decide which of these two DVDs to
buy might be tough for fans, but if you want a little advice
on which to pick up, I think it’s pretty clear. Buy
’em both and save yourself the heartache. They’re
both well worth the investment.
