THE
COTTON CLUB: SPIDER-MAN 2

Get ready to take another swing-Spider-Man's
coming back to the big screen.
After the original "Spider-Man" film smashed
box office records with an $114 million opening weekend and
a $821 million total box office, "Spider-Man 2" opens on July
2, 2004-and according to everyone involved, it's even better
than the fan-favorite first film.
"Everything
is bigger and better," says Marvel Studios President and "Spider-Man"
executive producer Avi Arad. "The story, the action.everything
is better. We're making a very special movie with "[Spider-Man
2"]. It will even top the first film."
Of course,
fans are rabid for any little piece of info on the plot or
story from "Spider-Man 2," unfortunately don't expect many
spoilers online. Director Sam Raimi's made it a point to make
sure this film doesn't have the numerous leaks of costumes
and story points that the first film saw.
"I don't
want to create any false mystery or confound the fans but
I do want to have the story told to the audience as they watch
the film," explained Raimi. "Ideally, I don't wan it told
to the audience in little bits and snatches by television
clips and Internet stories. And obviously, it's everyone's
right to talk about anything they want to. I don't want to
cast any dispersions on that. But I want to be the one who
tells the story."
There
are a few things known about the film, though. Tobey Maguire,
who returns as Peter Parker and Spider-Man almost didn't make
it back for the sequel because of back problems that forced
him to sit out some early work. But now back, Maguire's donned
his tights again and ready for action. While shooting in New
York, fans snapped pictures of Maguire and other stunt men
swinging from wires and even one shot of Aunt May being taken
for a swing by the web-head.
Kirsten
Dunst also returns as Mary Jane Watson, an aspiring actress
and Peter Parker's first love. Unfortunately for Spidey, after
Peter Parker turned down Mary Jane's advances at the end of
the last film, she's gone on to find new success and a new
love. As a New York actress, MJ's dating astronaut John Jameson,
the son of Daily Bugle publisher-and Peter Parker's boss-J.
Jonah Jameson.
The biggest
news in terms of casting though revolves around Alfred Molina
as Spider-Man's newest foe-Dr. Octopus.
Unveiled
at San Diego Comic Con, Doc Ock is everything a fanboy wants
when their comic book heroes (and villains) hit the big screen.
With four, long, strong and scary robotic tentacles, there's
no complaints about this villains costume, unlike the shouts
from fans about Willem Dafoes' Green Goblin costume in the
first film.
"I'm
told he's one of the more popular villains," Molina told USA
Today just two days after his tentacles and trench coat costume
were debuted. "It would have been foolish to say no [to this
role.]"
