'AQUAMAN 2' DIRECTOR TEASES "QUITE DIFFERENT" TONE FOR SEQUEL

Aquaman 2: James Wan on why he returned to direct the sequel

DC Studios is currently wrapping up the film slate that was enacted by the previous regime before James Gunn and Peter Safran took over as DC Studios co-CEOs, and they're going to reboot the universe with the upcoming The Flash movie. But they also have two other films that are set to be released later this year: Blue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

Very little has been heard or said about the Aquaman sequel, although DC did give those in attendance at this year's CinemaCon a sneak peek. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom brings back James Wan in the director's chair as well as Jason Momoa as the King of the Seven Seas. In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Wan revealed that this film will have a very different tone than the original.

"I hope to finish it up soon-ish. We have the DGA thing [contract negotiations] coming up next month, and so there’s just some stuff that we have to finish. It’s a big movie. It has a lot of visual effects and moving parts, but we’re moving in that direction, and I cannot wait for people to see it. I think people are going to be excited to see that this movie is quite different from the first movie in terms of tone. It’s a little bit more serious, and we’re dealing with issues like climate change. We’re not afraid to lean into that in a big way, because the Aquaman comic book, even way back when, has always been environmentally conscious. He’s always been someone who’s fought to keep the ocean clean, and it feels more relevant in the world that we’re living in today. So this movie has something to talk about, but it’s still a fun action-fantasy movie." (via ComicBook.com)

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is due to hit theaters on December 20.

CHARLIE COX SIGNS A COPY OF DAREDEVIL #1 FOR A FAN

Source: Twitter | Comments (0) | E-mail Article | Add a Comment
A young lady on the social media platform formerly know as Twitter, has cause a bit of a ruckus this weekend. Her account name is Mal and she describes herself as a 20-year-old Matt Murdock enthusiast as well as a fan of Marvel, Star Wars, Adam Driver, Charlies Cox and 5sos… I’m not familiar with that last one. Mal went to what appears to be Fan Expo Boston this weekend and stood inline for an autograph and for a photo with Charlie Cox. On her twitter pages she posted a video and photo as she asked Charlie to sign her copy of Daredevil #1 from 1964 by Stan Lee and Bill Everett. The actor did as he was requested and posed with Mal and her comic, a photo separate from the photo session she was set up for later that day. Mal appears to be very happy with everything that happened, but when posting all of this on social media, people started calling her out for “defacing comic history.” Daredevil #1 is valued anywhere between $1,700 to $21,000 depending on the condition and these posters felt Charlie’s signature would bring the value of the comic down. But there are two values to a comic, the resale value which only matters if you’re trying to sell it, and the enjoyment value you get from owning the comic. And having one of her favorite actors who brings the character to life for Marvel Studios adds to the enjoyment value for Mal, and that is the only thing that matters. Nice job Mal, and thank you for sharing your experience with everyone.Charlie Cox and Mal

The summer box office seems to be finally waking up. After last weekend’s strong opening for Bad Boys: Ride or Die, this week’s is an even bigger haul as Pixar’s latest animated feature, Inside Out 2, opened to a whopping $155 million domestically and $295 million worldwide. This is the best global opening of the year, beating out Dune: Part Two at $182.5 million and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire at $194 million. This is also the second best opening for an animated film of all time. It’s also the most tickets sold to a movie opening weekend since Barbie. As for the rest of the box office, Bad Boys continued to perform well, dropping only 45% in their second weekend with $33 million. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes came in third with $5.2 million, the Garfield Movie was fourth with $5 million and Watchers rounded out the top five with $3.66 million.  Inside Out 2
RUSSELL CROWE THOUGHTS ON SUPERHERO MOVIES AS ART BY COMMITTEE

During a recent interview with GQ magazine, Russell Crowe was asked about some comments made by Dakota Johnson about her movie Madam Web and how superhero movies can feel like art made by committee. Crowe, having recently appeared in Thor: Love & Thunder is a veteran of these types of movies. When asked about his experience, Crowe said: “I don’t want to make any comments to what anybody else might have said or what their experience is, but… you’re bringing out the impish quality of my humour. [Laughs.] You’re telling me you signed up for a Marvel movie, and some fucking universe for cartoon characters... and you didn’t get enough pathos? Not quite sure how I can make this better for you. It’s a gigantic machine, and they make movies at a certain size. And you know, I’ve experienced that on the DC side with Man of Steel, Zack Snyder, and I’ve experienced it on the Marvel side via Disney with Thor: Love and Thunder. And I’ve also experienced the [Sony-produced] Marvel dark universe with Kraven the Hunter. These are jobs. You know: here’s your role, play the role. If you’re expecting this to be some kind of life-changing event, I just think you’re here for the wrong reasons. It can be challenging, working in a blue-screen world, when you have to convince yourself of a lot more than just the internal machinations of your character. But for anything to be... and you can’t make this a direct comment on her because I don’t know her and I don’t know what she went through, and the fact that you can have a shit experience on a film… Yeah, you can. But is that the Marvel process? I’m not sure you can say that. I haven’t had a bad experience. I mean [on Thor], OK, it’s a Marvel movie, but it’s Taika Waititi’s world, and it was just a gas every day, being silly. And then, with JC Chandor on Kraven, I’m just bringing a little weight to the circumstances, so the young actors have got an actor they can bounce off. Going to work with JC was fun. You know, so many of these directors have a certain skill level – freaking genius people. Think about what’s required, right? It’s everything: the composition, the framing, the color, the music, what’s left outside the camera. Whether it’s [Proof director] Jocelyn Moorhouse or it’s Ridley Scott, you’re talking about hanging out with geniuses.”Russell Crowe
MAHERSHALA ALI'S REP CAN'T BELIEVE BLADE DELAYS

You think the incessant delays affecting the upcoming Blade movie are crazy? Imagine if you’re Mahershala Ali or the people who represent him. The Hollywood Reporter was talking to lawyers inside the industry which included Shelby Weiser, who represents Ali, who can’t believe the movie hasn’t begun filming yet. "That deal was in 2019, and they still haven't shot it, which is pretty much the craziest thing in my professional experience." The film has gone through more than its fair share of re-writes and directors leaving, throw on top of that a writer and actor strike, and you end up with a movie that’s been in production long enough that they should be working on the sequel instead. At the moment the film is still slated for a November 2025 release, but that is becoming harder and harder to believe as Marvel Studios begins looking for its third director since Yann Damange exited the project. And now the studio has to worry about keeping their star as Ali is said to be talking to Universal about joining Jurassic World 4. We’re likely to hear more about both movies this summer with big events like San Diego Comicon and D23 on the horizon.  Mahershala Ali
28 RIDERS GET STUCK UPSIDE DOWN AT AMUSEMENT PARK

Emergency personnel were summoned to the Oaks Park amusement park outside of Portland, Oregon Friday as one of their rides malfunctioned and left 28 people hanging upside down. Firefighters worked with the park’s engineers to manually lower the ride and the patrons were all medically evaluated on the scene. No injuries were reported, but one rider with a pre-existing medical condition   went to the hospital for further evaluation as a precaution. The ride, called AtmosFEAR, swings riders completely upside down. It has been in service since 2021 with no prior incidents, though the ride will remain closed until further notice. The amusement park, which first opened in 1905, released an official statement which included “We wish to express our deepest appreciation to the first responders and our staff for taking prompt action, leading to a positive outcome today, and to the rest of the park guests who swiftly followed directions to vacate the park to make way for the emergency responders to attend to the situation.”AtmosFEAR

At the Annecy Animation Festival this week, Warner Bros executives showed off some teasers for the start of the James Gunn/Peter Safran lead DCU. While now finished footage was shown, the upcoming Creature Commandos was introduced through a recorded video from Gunn and the reveal of two storyboarded sequences. The first featured Rick Flag Sr., voiced by Frank Grillo in a dust up with Doctor Phosphorus, voiced by Alan Tudyk. It was announced recently that Grillo will also appear as Flag in the upcoming second season of Peacemaker. The second scene was a bit more comedic and showed G.I. Robot, voiced by Sean Gunn, bonding with fishwoman Nina Mazursky, voiced by Zoë Chao. The series is being described as, “dark, humorous but never goofy and unsentimental, [an] adult-themed show with political storylines.” It’s also said to continue both the narrative and style direction of Gunn’s previous DCU projects, The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker. It was revealed early this week that the Creature Commandos will debut on MAX in December of this year.Creature Commandos

‘BLUE BEETLE’ ANIMATED SERIES IN WORKS AT DC

Photo of Xolo Mariduena as Blue Beetle

Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios are looking to continue telling Blue Beetle stories via an animated series currently in development, Deadline is reporting. Miguel Puga (The Casagrandes) has been working on the project since early this year and will serve as the project’s showrunner and director with Cristian Martinez (Women of the Movement, Good Trouble) set as writer. Angel Manuel Soto and Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, director and screenwriter of the 2023 film, respectively, will executive produce alongside John Rikard who served in the same capacity on the film. Galen Vaisman, who was an EP on the film, will oversee the animated TV series for DC Studios. Many things are still in flux including contracts for any main cast; however, many reportedly have been approached and DC has received a positive response regarding returns. The animated series will reportedly build on the movie, developed under DC Studios’ previous regime, but will divert from telling the same story. Instead, the show will create its own story which, in success, could potentially lead to a return to the big screen for the giant blue bug portrayed by Xolo Maridueña.
GERRY DUGGAN & JOHN MCCREA REUNITE FOR SEQUEL TO 'DEAD EYES'

Legendary creator and writer Gerry Duggan (X-Men, Falling In Love On The Path To Hell) and award-winning artist John McCrea (Hitman, Mythic) are reuniting to bring back their deadly crime series Dead Eyes for a five-issue miniseries that takes off after the events of the original mafia mystery story. Dead Eyes: The Empty Frames kicks off a new chapter in the fan-favorite vigilante thriller, hitting shelves this September. In Dead Eyes: The Empty Frames, the world’s most unkillable comic is out of hiding and back stomping around Boston. At the end of the first volume, the masked hood known as Dead Eyes picked up a clue as to the location of the paintings swiped in the largest private art heist in America. Can Dead Eyes and Wheels take down the score while avoiding the cops and the mafia? Creators Duggan and McCrea are back and knocking teeth down throats. “The unkillable Dead Eyes is back! We’ve never stopped working on Dead Eyes, and The Empty Frames has more tragical hilarious action than the first one. As always, McCrea, and colorist Mike Spicer really show off in this new volume and prove once again why they’re one of the best teams in the business,” said Duggan. “I love drawing Dead Eyes! Gerry gives me a gritty, film noir world to sink my artistic teeth into, with just the right balance of humor and violence. And I get to work with my longtime collaborator, the amazing Mike Spicer. Plus the fantastic Joe Sabino on lettering duty ties everything up in a pretty, bloody bow. What more could a growing boy want!” said McCrea. The first volume of Dead Eyes is available for purchase now in stores and on digital platforms.

Dead Eyes: The Empty Frames #1 will be available at comic book shops on Wednesday, September 11:

Cover A by John McCrea - Lunar Code 0724IM264

Cover B by Dave Johnson - Lunar Code 0724IM265

Cover C by Scott Koblish (1:15 Incentive) - Lunar Code 0724IM266

Dead Eyes: The Empty Frames #1 will also be available across many digital platforms, including Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, and Google Play.

ANTHONY BOURDAIN-PENNED GRAPHIC NOVELS TO BECOME ADULT SWIM TV SHOW

Adult Swim is cooking up two new series, one of which adapts the late Anthony Bourdain‘s graphic novels. Ahead of Warner Bros. Discovery’s adult animation showcase being held Friday at the Annecy Animation Festival, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Get Jiro! has received a series order from Adult Swim. The animated half-hour project is based on the New York Times best-selling DC/Vertigo graphic novels written by famed chef and TV personality Bourdain and Joel Rose, with accompanying artwork from Langdon Foss and Alé Garza. Set in the near future, the show centers on a mysterious, revenge-focused sushi chef named Jiro in a version of Los Angeles where customers resort to murder to secure a table at coveted restaurants. Get Jiro! is created by Brian Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka, who co-wrote last year’s A24 feature Sharper which starred Julianne Moore and Sebastian Stan, and they were producers on NBC’s comedy series Superstore. Bourdain and Rose’s first graphic novel in the franchise was published in 2012. Also going to series at Adult Swim is Super Mutant Magic Academy as My Adventures With Superman lands a third season.
