Little Mermaid Preview Oscars

Disney’s live-action remake of “The Little Mermaid” is beginning its box office swim with $10.3 million in previews. It opens in 4,320 theaters on Friday.

Thursday’s preview haul is the seventh-highest ever for a G- or PG-rated movie. “The Little Mermaid” also picked up $850,000 from Wednesday early access screenings.

Starring singer and actor Halle Bailey as Ariel, the new movie is projected to open with $100 million this holiday weekend. With Memorial Day on Monday, its four-day total could land between $120 million and $125 million.

“The Little Mermaid” is expected to make a big splash as one of Disney’s more successful live-action remakes. In comparison, Disney’s most recent remake, the 2019 photorealistic and computer animated “The Lion King,” roared with a $191 million opening from $23 million in previews. It went on to make more than $1 billion globally. And just a couple months before “The Lion King” released, the live-action “Aladdin” opened with $117 million over the four-day Memorial Day weekend (from $7 million in previews) and also cracked $1 billion worldwide. NEW YORK CITY BRACES FOR A MUTANT EVOLUTION IN 'NYX'
06/21/24 @ 10:03 pm EST
Source: Marvel | Categories: NYX | Comments (0) | E-mail Article | Add a Comment

In the wake of Krakoa, a group of former X-Men students must navigate young adulthood, discrimination, and threats bent on shattering human-mutant relations for good in NYX, a new ongoing series from hotshot writing duo Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing (Timeless, Alien: Black, White & Blood) and rising star artist Francesco Mortarino (Avengers, Cult of Carnage: Misery). This exciting new X-Men series set in the upcoming From the Ashes era kicks off on July 24 and today, fans can check out all the covers that will grace the highly anticipated debut issue. Like the groundbreaking original series, NYX won’t shy away from reflecting the harsh realities of life as a mix of iconic and fan-favorite mutants reenter a world filled with bigotry, mistrust, and misinformation. No longer under the X-Men’s guidance or Krakoa’s protection, Ms. Marvel, Wolverine, Sophie Cuckoo, Prodigy, Anole, and more must rise above the hate and division they encounter at work, school, and in their social lives by forging a new form of mutant community. But they aren’t the only ones looking to uplift mutantkind. As fans saw earlier this week in a foreboding teaser, a mutant called the Krakoan is twisting the dream of Krakoa to dominate the city! A former X-Man, fans will learn the Krakoan’s identity and meet his very powerful compatriots right in NYX #1. NYX #1’s covers are drawn by some of today’s most popular cover artists. Rickie Yagawa draws a striking group shot of the main cast while Stanley “Artgerm” Lau, Pablo Villalobos, Rogê Antônio, and veteran artist Todd Nauck deliver stunning images of Laura Kinney, aka Wolverine, who made her comic book debut in the original series and now brings the action to the title once again! A Logo Variant Cover is also available. “A lot of these [new] books, while there are some incredible solo titles, are X-team books,” Kelly said. “And they’re very much about X-Men solving X-Men problems. One of the things that we’re lensing in on is Yes, this is arguably a team, but they’re not a super hero team. They are a friendship, they are a community.” Check out the covers and preorder NYX #1 at your local comic shop today!

‘INSIDE OUT 2’ HEADS FOR $85M-$90M+ SECOND WEEKEND
06/21/24 @ 10:08 pm EST
Source: Deadline | Categories: Disney | Comments (0) | E-mail Article | Add a Comment

Anger from 'Inside Out 2' is angry because theatrical refuses to be dead.

Whoever wrote that the theatrical business is dead may want to run a correction as Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 is potentially headed to a historic second weekend for an animated movie, topping Illumination/Universal’s Super Mario Bros Movie‘s $92.3M. Rival projections see $95 million for the second frame of the Kelsey Mann-directed sequel, while insiders see $85M-$90M+ after a $28M-$30M Friday at 4,400 locations. Today’s till alone will propel the sequel to become the highest-grossing movie YTD leaving Dune: Part Two in the dust ($282.1M domestic). At that level, Inside Out 2 looks to post the best second weekend for any Disney animated release, besting Frozen 2‘s $85.9M and Incredibles 2‘s $80.3M. (via Deadline)
MAX REVEALS KITE MAN SPINOFF RELEASE DATE

Kite Man: Hell Yeah! Release Date Rumors: Is It Coming Out?

Kite Man: Hell Yeah has a release date on Max after a recent promotional reel hit social media. Fans of the Harley Quinn character can look forward to the new show on July 18. Kite Man: Hell Yeah has been in the hopper for a while now. Harley Quinn was one of the first breakout hits on Max. With that positive positioning, the past few seasons have been delightful superhero television. But showrunners Patrick Schumacker and Justin Halpern think we could all use a little bit more of Kite Man in our lives. As part of the ensemble cast, the lower tier DC character has really shined during Harley Quinn's run. Look for that to remain the case when Kite Man: Hell Yeah hits the skies next month. 'DARK MATTER' SEASON 2: WILL APPLE TV+ RELEASE MORE EPISODES?

Dark Matter Season 2: Will Apple TV+ Release More Episodes?

A second season of Dark Matter on Apple TV+ has not been announced, but fans are itching for it. Season 1 of the hit sci-fi series -- which sees an American physicist accidentally warped to an alternate universe as he fights to get back to his family and the life he left behind -- is set to finish on June 26. The first season was based on Blake Crouch's 2016 novel of the same name, and since it was a standalone story when written, any follow-up would need to be an original tale rather than an adaptation. Another of Crouch's novels, Wayward Pines, was similarly adapted for TV in 2015. It also was a single-book effort by the author but was extended for television, with Season 2 telling a new story beyond the book; it was not seen as successful. One wildcard Dark Matter has that Wayward Pines did not, though, is Blake Crouch himself. Crouch serves as the showrunner on the Apple TV+ series. (via The Direct)

Virginia Gardner will star alongside Grace Caroline Currey in The Breed

Virginia Gardner and Grace Caroline Currey scaled a 2,000-foot communications tower in Fall and will now face-off against wild dogs in The Breed. Gardner has joined the survival movie, reuniting her with Currey (Shazam!) who had already signed on. Gardner and Currey co-starred in Scott Mann’s vertigo thriller Fall. After the success of the first film, a sequel is in the works. The Breed is billed as an unconventional reimagining of the cult Wes Craven-produced movie of the same name. Brothers Nathan and Griff Furst are directing. Filming in Guatemala, the film is expected to be released in 2025. The new movie will, producers say, follow a group of people searching for abandoned dogs on a remote island, with terror-filled consequences. Other cast includes Page Kennedy who starred in the Meg movies. (via Deadline)
PATRICK DEMPSEY JOINS ‘DEXTER’ PREQUEL ‘ORIGINAL SIN’

Patrick Dempsey‘s turning in scrubs for a uniform. The actor, best known for his role on “Grey’s Anatomy”, has joined the cast of “Dexter: Original Sin” as a series regular. He is set to portray Aaron Spencer, the Captain of the Miami Metro Homicide who has a decades-long relationship with Christian Slater’s Harry Morgan. The “Dexter” prequel, which began production in Miami earlier this month, also stars Patrick Gibson as Dexter Morgan, Molly Brown as Debra Morgan, James Martinez as Angel Batista, Christina Milian as Maria LaGuerta, Alex Shimizu as Vince Masuka and Reno Wilson as Bobby Watt. (David Zayas, Lauren Vélez, and C. S. Lee starred as Batista, LaGuerta, and Masuka, respectively, in the original series, while Watt is a new character.) Set in 1991, 15 years before the events of “Dexter,” the series follows Dexter as he “transitions from student to avenging serial killer,” per the official logline. “When his bloodthirsty urges can’t be ignored any longer, Dexter must learn to channel his inner darkness. With the guidance of his father, Harry (Slater), he adopts a Code designed to help him find and kill people who deserve to be eliminated from society without getting on law enforcements’ radar. This is a particular challenge for young Dexter as he begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.” (via Variety)

BLOOD LEAVES A STAIN - RED SONJA FACES HER SINS IN NEW SERIES!

No good deed goes unpunished, and the She-Devil With a Sword will learn that in a brand new series by prolific writer Luke Lieberman in Red Sonja: Death and the Devil this September!

Readers know these sword and sorcery heroes like Red Sonja for their many conquests and enemies felled through their fables. Yet sometimes killing some foe and riding off into the sunset leaves a world of consequences behind. Sometimes, the balance of kingdoms could be at play. Across legendary, this reality is ignored, and it's past time for Sonja to face the consequences of her blood path.

Sonja has dealt death so many times, and the spilled blood is coming back to haunt her, as chronicled by veteran scribe Luke Lieberman (Birth of the She-Devil, The Price of Blood). He's joined by rising star artist Alberto Locatelli, who wowed readers with his work in Vampirella: Dead Flowers.

After she killed the Sultan of Turan in Birth of a She Devil, the kingdom dissolved into a bloody chaos of serpent cults and rival warlords vying to claim the throne. Sonja knows, the bloodshed and collapse into anarchy is her fault, so she returns to find the Sultan's true heir. At least, that is the plan...

"For some reason we just take it as a given that the hero kills the villain and then it’s happily ever after. That’s not how the world works," said writer Luke Lieberman. "There are always unintended consequences to battles and wars, personal or global. They are never clean or wrapped up with a bow, and if you take a life, you are responsible for whatever flows out of that action."

Death and the Devil is fronted by an all-star roster of cover artists including Joseph Michael Linsner, Celina, Moritat, and cosplayer Rachel Hollon.

Fans won't want to miss this rousing tale of adventure that tallies the costs exacted by the path of the word, for a unique perspective on the genre.

RED SONJA: DEATH AND THE DEVIL #1 will be solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors’ July 2024 Previews catalog, the premier source of merchandise for the comic book specialty market, and slated for release in September 2024. Comic book fans are encouraged to preorder copies of the book with their local comic book retailers. It will also be available for individual customer purchase through digital platforms courtesy of Comixology, Kindle, iBooks, Google Play, Dynamite Digital, ComicsPlus, and more!
‘PENGUIN’ SECOND TRAILER: COLIN FARRELL IN NEW LOOK AT ‘BATMAN’ SPINOFF

Max has released a new look at its upcoming DC crime drama The Penguin that gives a much more expansive look at the show’s world and characters. Below is the second teaser trailer for the upcoming Max limited series — a spinoff of Matt Reeves’ 2022 hit The Batman starring Colin Farrell as the infamous Gotham City gangster. The footage includes scenes clearly picking up right after the events at the end of The Batman. In the movie, The Penguin was a lieutenant to crime boss Carmine Falcone, who met an untimely end. In the series, The Penguin is stepping up to lead crime in Gotham City in a series. The footage suggests the show could play like a DC take on The Sopranos. Lauren LeFranc (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) serves as showrunner. (via The Hollywood Reporter)
