'GODZILLA X KONG' FOLLOW-UP ENLISTS WRITER DAVE CALLAHAM

Source: Hollywood Reporter | Categories: Godzilla | Comments (0) | E-mail Article | Add a Comment

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings screenwriter Dave Callaham is going from the Marvelverse to the Monsterverse. The scribe, known for his action acumen, has been tapped to pen the next installment of Legendary’s Godzilla/Kong monster movie series. The hiring comes in the wake of the box office success of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which has grossed close to $555 million worldwide. That is the biggest haul since 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, which peaked at $568 million. Empire, which is still in theaters, may also be one of the most profitable (if not the single most profitable) of the five movies in the series, as it only cost $135 million, per sources. Thus Legendary is keen to keep the monster juice flowing.Adam Wingard directed Empire and created the story with frequent collaborator Simon Barrett as well as Terry Rossio. Legendary has signaled it would like to see Wingard return to the director’s chair after a successful run that also included the 2021 entry Godzilla vs. Kong. But Wingard has no deal at this stage. DENYS COWAN RETURNS TO MARVEL FOR 'DEATHLOK 50TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL'
06/12/24 @ 7:40 pm EST
Source: Marvel | Categories: Deathlok | Comments (0) | E-mail Article | Add a Comment

In 1974’s Astonishing Tales #25, one of comics’ most offbeat heroes was born—DEATHLOK! This September, Marvel celebrates the iconic cyborg’s legacy alongside an all-star lineup of comic book talent in DEATHLOK 50th ANNIVERSAY SPECIAL #1, including creative powerhouse Denys Cowan! After his acclaimed work on titles like Power Man and Iron Fist and Black Panther throughout the ‘80s, Cowan brought his iconic talents to the very character that inspired his comics career in Deathlok’s early ‘90s solo series. Throughout his run, Cowan explored deeper themes behind Deathlok’s tragic story and reinvented the character with his unique artwork. Now, he’s back to not only honor Deathlok’s impact, but to help steer the character towards a bold new future! "Deathlok will always be an incredible character and very important to me,” Cowan shared. "There were a few comics that I read when I was growing up that had a big impact on my younger self. Luke Cage, Hero for Hire; Jungle Action with Black Panther, and Tales to Astonish featuring Deathlok. All those books were great, but Deathlok captured my imagination with all the concepts explored and the great art and writing! I can honestly say that reading Deathlok definitely changed my life and made me want to draw comics for a living. I thought if I could capture a little bit of what Buckler and Klaus Janson did I might become a good comic book artist.” “A lot of people think Denys Cowan when they think of Deathlok,” Editor Mark Paniccia added. “His run was unique and dynamic. It was important to us that he be part of celebrating an anniversary as special as this.” An amalgam of reanimated flesh and computer circuitry, former military strategist Col. Luther Manning was locked in a state of living death. Stripped of his family, his humanity, but not his will, Manning became the cyborg, Deathlok the Demolisher—a weapon of war programmed solely for destruction! A bold blend of science fiction, horror, and war, Deathlok’s genre-shattering sagas pushed the limits on dystopian storytelling. Fifty years later, this cyborg hero’s tale is more relevant than ever and readers won’t want to miss where his path takes him next! Check out Cowan’s cover and preorder DEATHLOK 50TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL #1 at your local comic shop today!

(L-R) Marvin Jones III, Michael Xavier and Dominic Burgess

Marvin Jones III (Halo), Michael Xavier (Wild Cards) and Dominic Burgess (Palm Royale) have joined the cast of Prime Video‘s graphic novel series, Criminal, in recurring roles. They join the previously announced leads: Charlie Hunnam, Adria Arjona, Richard Jenkins, Kadeem Hardison and Logan Browning. Criminal is an interlocking universe of crime stories based on the multi-Eisner Award-winning graphic novel series created by Brubaker and Sean Phillips. Jones III will play Chester, crime boss Sebastian Hyde’s (John Hawkes) fearsome chief enforcer. Much like a seven-foot-tall man becoming a basketball player whether he likes it or not, Chester was drafted into the criminal life for his size and fearsomeness. He’s no sadist, relying on his reputation and intelligence to get his way. He speaks softly most of the time, but the threat of sudden and deadly violence is always there. Xavier will play Terry, another criminal, a good friend of Leo (Hunnam), a tough armed robber with a big heart, stepdad to Angie (Aliyah Camacho) and the love of Greta’s (Adria Arjona) life. Burgess plays Delron, a large man with a large appetite and large emotions. Delron is facing a trial in the next few days, and he’s at the mercy of a few powers that be in the criminal organization he works for. Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden are confirmed to direct the first four episodes. Brubaker will co-showrun with crime fiction author Jordan Harper. Brubaker and Harper EP alongside Sean Phillips, Sarah Carbiener and Philipp Barnett. (via Deadline)
ONI PRESS LIFTS THE VEIL ON 'THE AUTUMN KINGDOM' #1– A NEW VISION OF FOLK-HORROR
06/12/24 @ 8:29 am EST
Source: Oni Press | Categories: Oni Press | Comments (0) | E-mail Article | Add a Comment

Oni Press is proud to unveil THE AUTUMN KINGDOM #1 – the FIRST ISSUE of a new four-part horror-fantasy spectacle from master storyteller Cullen Bunn (Invasive, The Sixth Gun, Harrow County) and visionary artist Christopher Mitten (Hellboy & the B.P.R.D.)! Following one family’s labyrinthine descent through a perilous forest where the local folklore is anything but a myth, THE AUTUMN KINGDOM #1 appears in comic shops everywhere on September 4th! Bestselling author Andrew Kier found the perfect place to finish his latest dark-fantasy novel—an idyllic, remote cabin on the edge of a lush Swedish forest. His young daughters, Sommer and Winter, gleefully explore . . . until they happen upon a strange clearing of ancient statues: goblins, dwarves, elves, and a warrior queen mysteriously missing her swordhand and weapon. When something sinister follows the girls home and viciously snatches their parents in the night, the sisters’ only hope may be that ancient relic, lost in the forest underbrush, waiting for a new champion to take it up . . . “The words 'THE AUTUMN KINGDOM' have been written in one of my oldest journals for decades,” said writer Bunn. “Over the years, I've returned to them again and again. I knew I wanted to tell a dark fantasy tale about the fairy realms. I just wasn't sure what that story might be until I stumbled onto the idea of Sommer and Winter, a pair of young sisters who find themselves alone, facing the forces of a supernatural realm. Their lives—and the lives of their parents—are on the line. Thank goodness they've discovered a nasty, death-dealing blade that seems to hunger for the blood of elves and trolls and goblins. Sommer and Winter are thrown down a violent path from which there may be no escape. No matter what, they won't get through this journey unscathed and unchanged.” “For years—almost as long as we’ve both been making comics—Cullen and I have been wanting to work together on something,” said Mitten. “And that it’s this book, this story, makes it all the more special.” "THE AUTUMN KINGDOM is a dark fairytale born straight from the moss-grown hollows of an ancient Scandinavian forest," says Senior Editor Bess Pallares. "As a folk horror enthusiast, when Cullen first shared his idea of these two young sisters fighting to save their parents from goblin hordes with only the assistance of a mysterious, powerful, and gigantic blade, my imagination was aflame with possibilities. Cullen and Chris have crafted a beautiful, terrifying, and exciting story sure to lure readers down its shadowy path into the woods." Featuring dazzling covers from the darkest recesses of the imaginations of artists Christopher Mitten (Wasteland, The Alternates), Alison Sampson (Hit-Girl), Malachi Ward (Black Hammer: The End), Daniel Vega (THE CODEX NOIRMATIC), and Vanesa R. Del Rey (Scarlet Witch, Redlands), THE AUTUMN KINGDOM #1 shatters the line between dream and reality, horror and fantasy. Find it in comic shops everywhere September 4th!

Headshots of L-R: Gus Halper, Aliyah Camacho, Michael Mando

Gus Halper (Rustin), Aliyah Camacho (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) and Michael Mando (Better Call Saul) have joined the cast of Prime Video‘s graphic novel series, Criminal, in recurring roles. They join the previously announced cast of Charlie Hunnam, Adria Arjona, Richard Jenkins, Kadeem Hardison, Logan Browning, Pat Healy, Taylor Selé and John Hawkes. Criminal is an interlocking universe of crime stories based on the multi-Eisner Award-winning graphic novel series created by Brubaker and Sean Phillips. Halper will portray Ricky, an unstable guy who likes booze, coke, and speed (and not within moderation), Ricky Lawless has known Leo since they were teenagers. Like Leo, he’s the son of a criminal — only his dad was the most-feared man in the city, Teeg Lawless. Camacho will play Angie, Greta’s (Arjona) daughter. Angie is sharp, alert and maybe a little too adult for her age. Having lost her father at a young age, it is only she and her mom making their way through life. She has an idea of the kind of business her mom is in, no matter how much Greta tries to shield her. Mando will play Jeff, a plainclothes Vice detective who pretty much hates all of humanity, and he’s looking to make a score screwing over anyone and everyone that is in his way. The kind of bad cop who uses his badge to shove others around and get them to do his bidding. (via Deadline)

After 26 years, the Owens women are returning. Warner Bros. has announced a followup film to the 1998 classic, “Practical Magic,” with Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman in talks to return. The first movie starred Bullock and Kidman as the witchy Owens sisters who get wrapped up in a supernatural coverup after Bullock (unintentionally) drugs and kills Kidman’s abusive ex-boyfriend (Goran Višnjić), forcing them to reanimate his corpse. Directed by Griffin Dunne and adapted from the 1995 novel of the same name by Alice Hoffman, the original film stands as a beloved, spooky season staple. Akiva Goldsman will write the screenplay for the new movie, with Bullock and Kidman expected to produce alongside Denise Di Novi. (via Variety)

Director Pete Browngardt’s sci-fi comedy from Warner Bros. Animation is set to hit theaters domestically later this year but does not yet have an announced release date. The project focuses on Porky and Daffy (both voiced by Eric Bauza) learning that aliens are plotting to overtake the planet, which leads the pair to put their differences aside and help save the world.
