'TRANSFORMERS' FRANCHISE GETS A REVAMP WITH TWO SEPARATE FILMS IN THE WORKS
01/28/20 @ 9:26 am EST
Source: Variety | Categories: Transformers | Comments (0) | E-mail Article | Add a Comment

Bumblebee Transformers

Variety reports that Paramount Pictures is looking to revamp its Transformers franchise in a big way, as sources say two simultaneous scripts are now in active development: one by James Vanderbilt and one by Joby Harold.

Paramount’s most recent take on the franchise was 2018’s Bumblebee, a coming-of-age tale that was produced on a smaller budget than other Transformers films. That different approach went over well with both critics and audiences, grossing $465 million worldwide and opening up a new opportunity to continue the franchise, with the studio now expanding the Transformers universe with the development of two scripts.

Details behind both scripts are still vague, but sources say they present an opportunity build out multiple storylines within the franchise.

No directors have been attached to either script and it’s also likely that both projects will feature brand-new casts.

BOX OFFICE: BATTLE BETWEEN 'SONIC' AND 'THE CALL OF THE WILD' HEATS UP ON FRIDAY
02/21/20 @ 8:20 pm EST
Source: Hollywood Reporter | Categories: MIsc | Comments (0) | E-mail Article | Add a Comment

THR reports that it's a heated race between Sonic the Hedgehog and Harrison Ford's The Call of the Wild at this weekend's box office as the two family films are shaping up to be equal matches, according to Friday estimates.

The Call of the Wild, the latest cinematic adaptation of Jack London's classic novel, this time starring Ford and a CGI dog, barked up $7 million from Thursday night and Friday shows and is eyeing a 3-day haul of $21 million to $26 million. The movie, directed by Chris Sanders and inherited by Disney following its acquisition of Fox, boasts a hefty production budget of $125 million to $150 million before marketing.

Meanwhile Sonic the Hedgehog, Paramount's live action-CG hybrid family film directed by Jeff Fowler, looks to shoot past the $100 million milestone at the U.S. box office in its second weekend after drumming up $6.2 million on Friday, and is tracking towards $26 million. Sonic was a surprise hit, as it became the top opening ever for a video game adaptation with $70 million at the U.S. box office over President's Day weekend.

Early projections this week estimated that Sonic would outpace The Call of the Wild easily, with the hedgehog predicted to take $28 million to $30 million in its second weekend while 20th Century Studio's Ford starrer was projected to open in the mid-teen millions or higher. So far, The Call of the Wild is exceeding expectations.
NEW 'STAR WARS' MOVIE IN DEVELOPMENT WITH 'SLEIGHT' DIRECTOR, 'LUKE CAGE' WRITER

J.D. Dillard Star Wars

Lucasfilm is developing a new Star Wars feature film with Sleight writer-director J.D. Dillard and Luke Cage writer Matt Owens, Variety has confirmed.

The project is still in its very early stages, and all further details — characters, location, time period within the Star Wars creative galaxy — remain a mystery. That includes whether Dillard would direct the film, or whether the project would premiere in theaters or on Disney+.

Should the project land a greenlight, however, it would be the first time black filmmakers were lead creative forces behind a live-action Star Wars movie.

Disney/Lucasfilm declined to comment.

The murkiness of the platform for this prospective new Star Wars project, meanwhile, seems to only further cloud the future of Star Wars at Disney.
DC'S DAN DIDIO OUT AS CO-PUBLISHER
02/21/20 @ 8:10 pm EST
Source: Hollywood Reporter | Categories: DC | Comments (0) | E-mail Article | Add a Comment

The industry veteran had served in the role since 2010.

Dan DiDio is no longer with DC, THR has confirmed.

DiDio had served as publisher of DC alongside Jim Lee since 2010, following a six-year stint as VP executive editor, and, prior to that, VP editorial.

As publisher, DiDio was one of the main figures behind DC’s 2011 line-wide relaunch “The New 52,” which saw the company provide a contemporary make-over to its entire superhero back catalog. Initially a sales success, both sales and buzz faded to the point where 2016’s subsequent line-wide relaunch, under the banner “DC Universe Rebirth,” restored many elements dropped in the reboot.

DiDio’s departure comes ahead of an announced further relaunch of the DC comic book universe that would restore even more elements removed as part of the 2011 reboot, as teased at New York Comic Con last year. While that project has not been officially announced, certain stories that reportedly tie-in have been, including DC’s Free Comic Book Day release Generation Zero: Gods Among Us. It’s unclear if plans for this relaunch will be delayed or cancelled in the wake of this news.

With DiDio’s departure, Jim Lee becomes sole publisher at DC, in addition to his role as the company’s chief creative officer, a position he’s held since June 2018.

Variety reports that production on Netflix's fantasy epic The Witcher Season 2 has commenced in the U.K., with a planned launch in 2021.

The show also announced seven new cast members joining The Witcher for S2, including Kristofer Hivju, the Norwegian actor who played the red-bearded wilding leader Tormund Giantsbane on Game of Thrones.

Netflix last month claimed The Witcher Season 1 was tracking to be its biggest original TV series debut to date. However, that’s according to a new metric invented by the company that found 76 million member households watched at least 2 minutes of the show in the first four weeks after its Dec. 20 release.

The streamer renewed The Witcher for Season 2 last fall with an eight-episode order, more than a month before the freshman season hit the streaming service. The show represents “a massive new franchise that we’ll develop season after season,” Netflix chairman/CEO Reed Hastings said on the company’s Q4 2019 earnings interview Jan. 21.
