DF Interview: Cullen Bunn weaves a horrific story of ‘loss, guilt and revenge’ in ‘Basilisk’ By Byron Brewer Who can stop the Chimera? Five individuals bound by a cult-like hivemind, they terrorized small towns with their horrifying supernatural sense-based powers, leaving death and destruction in their wake. I sat down with the scribe to learn more. Byron Brewer: Cullen, here we are again discussing yet another fresh take you are giving readers on the horror genre. What was the inspiration for this most recent outing from BOOM! Studios, Basilisk? Cullen Bunn: This is a story of loss and guilt and revenge. It’s a tale of all-consuming obsession. The initial idea—a group of mysterious figures wandering down from the mountains and laying waste to a small town—came to me while driving through the Great Smoky Mountains. It was just one of those ideas that came about while my mind was drifting a bit. The rest of the story came together over a few weeks after that trip. There’s the lesson for writers looking to develop ideas: go on road trips. BB: And you are re-teaming with Bone Parish artist Jonas Scharf. I know Jonas knocked the former BOOM mag out of the park. Why is he THE artist for Basilisk and are you excited about the reuniting? Cullen Bunn: Jonas is an amazing artist, but he is also a tremendous collaborator. During the design phase, he contributed so many cool ideas that helped to inform the direction of the comic and shape the characters and the story. And he infuses all these great little scenes and images throughout the comic. It’s a book that you could read several times just to get all the little visual clues he has left behind. BB: So tell readers what the book is all about. Cullen Bunn: A few years back, a group of five mysterious figures—the Chimera—wandered down from the mountains into a small town. Within a few minutes, everyone in the town was dead. Each of these killers possessed a unique power connected to one of the five senses. Now, a grieving mother is hunting for these killers. She will go to unbelievable lengths to kill these god-like forces. Along the way, she is joined by an unexpected companion—one of the people she is hunting down. BB: What more can you tell us about Regan as a character. Unless it reveals too many spoilers, can you give us a little background on her when she was with the Chimera? Cullen Bunn: Regan needs to remain a bit of a mystery at this point. But she certainly possesses a terrible power connected to sight. She is also haunted by the things that her “brothers and sisters” have done in the past. Maybe she wants to atone for those sins. That is why she is helping Hannah, the woman who wants the Chimera dead. BB: Tell us about the Chimera and its other four members. Cullen Bunn: The other members of the Chimera include Vanessa, whose touch can kill. Jimmy-Boy, who is a vicious killer even without his strange power over the sensation of taste. Cara is the youngest (and maybe sweetest) of the group, but she possesses a dangerous power over the sense of smell. And there is Manny, who does not speak but possesses control over the sense of sound. They are all very powerful characters. They have risen as a destructive force, and they like their position in life. BB: Any details on Regan’s former victim that is bringing her heartache? Just a McGuffin? Cullen Bunn: Definitely not just a McGuffin. It’s central to the story. But I can say no more! BB: I know you do not like to do this, but if you had to liken Basilisk to one of your previous horror tales, which would it be? Bone Parish perhaps? Cullen Bunn: It’s tough to say. Bone Parish, perhaps, since both stories are supernatural while set in the real world. Maybe The Sixth Gun, because of the different powers of the characters, though this is a much darker tale. Even The Empty Man, because of the discussion of faith and belief. BB: Cullen, what other projects in which you are involved can you tell readers about?
