There
are few comics that actually live up to the hype—lucky
for us, The Ultimate War #1 does just
that.
Available tomorrow, (Wednesday, December
4) Ultimate War #1, starts off with a bang (literally)
and never lets up. For those of you outside the Ultimate
Universe know, Magneto was defeated
by the X-Men almost two years ago,
brainwashed by Professor Xavier, set up as a school
teacher in Queens and now he’s back—and
he’s not alone.
With a new Brotherhood of Evil Mutants,
Magneto and his crew blow up the Brooklyn Bridge as
they tell the human populace of Earth that it has a
mere six months before its hold on the planet is gone
and Homo Superior takes over. Without giving too much
away, the X-Men, the Ultimates (you know ’em as
the Avengers) and the government is none too happy with
Magneto’s reemergence, especially after Xavier
swore he was dead.

The Ultimate War is exactly the kind of crossover that a lot of fans have crucified
as gimmicks and stunts over the past decade after that boom
and bust of comics but the difference is—this series
gets it right. Mark Millar,
who writes both The Ultimates and Ultimate X-Men titles, does
the same for this series, and it helps keep the same characterization
and tone he’s worked into the individual books. Also,
artist Chris Bachalo
does an amazing job of drawing characters most fans are used
to seeing Bryan Hitch
and Adam Kubert
pencil. Bachalo’s pencils on The Ultimate War look as
good as ever with detailed renditions of New York City and
amazing splash pages of Captain America,
Wolverine and the rest of the two team’s
make-up.
Overall,
this is one of the most exciting and fun books I’ve
read in months and I can’t wait for issue #2—which
by the way ships just two weeks after #1.
