DF Interview: Jordan Thomas doubles the twists, the betrayals and the bullets in ‘Skin Police 2’

By Byron Brewer

Agents Eckis and Sheen swore an oath to protect the civilian population from the eminent danger of the rogue black market clones known as “Dupes” that can suddenly “pop” without any advance warning—which means any passerby on the street or subway could possibly become an unhinged spree killer on a moment’s notice. In return for their service, however, the public has dubbed Eckis, Sheen and their fellow agents the “Skin Police”—an insult handed back by a populace unwilling to sacrifice their own civil rights for the agents’ unprecedented duties in light of the Dupe threat. But what if these illegally manufactured clone doppelgängers weren’t as deadly as initially believed? What if they could be saved? And, as the underground resistance movement supporting them grows, what if their leader proved to be someone uncomfortably familiar to the Skin Police?

From writer Jordan Thomas (Mugshots) and artist Daniel Gete (Biker Mice from Mars), the hyper-kinetic, near-future action epic Skin Police returns with a second volume that begins with a no-holds-barred turning point for a world where morally gray law enforcement, black market illegal cloning, and political strife are about to boil over in a hail of gunfire. As with its initial run, I am here! And scribe and good friend Jordan Thomas tells me wassup with this second volume.

Byron Brewer: Jordan, why is now the time to return to Skin Police? Would you consider this a second volume or a continuation of the first four issues?

Jordan Thomas: The plan was always originally for eight issues. There was a bit of back and forth about how those eight issues would be released and it was eventually settled on two volumes of four. This new volume continues literally right where we left off last time, although in writing the scripts I did have a dividing line at the end of issue four, with that issue’s big reveal being the catalyst for the second set of issues.

Byron: Talk a little bit about what went on in the original run of Skin Police and what that term from “society” means.

Jordan Thomas: The first four issues of Skin Police set up a world full of illegal potentially dangerous clones with the DIC (unaffectionately known as the Skin Police) the government agency tasked with tracking them down and terminating them. The best DIC agent of all time is Brisson Eckis, our protagonist, and when the story started he was a complete believer in the mission. However, as things progressed, doubts started to form for Eckis as he was presented with the possibility that the government has been lying to everyone and the DIC may not be as in the right as he thought.

Byron: Can you describe the world, the canvas on which you initially placed readers for Skin Police, and what has changed as we return to this Earth in the year 2142?

Jordan Thomas: The main setting of our story is a future Spain, which is part of a now United Europe (UNE) that came about through an aggressive dictatorial takeover some time in the past in the belief that to compete with the world superpowers of the USA and China Europe needed to become one entity. The UNE now functions as a kind of sham democracy where there is the illusion of the people having some say in who leads them, but in reality everything is rigged to keep the current forces in power. This has allowed government organizations like the DIC to exist with their dystopian levels of access to the population and their lack of concern for human rights.

Byron: Introduce readers to your cast, and what has changed for them in and since first run issue #4? Who are they and where are they headed now?

Jordan Thomas: Well, I already laid out DIC Special Agent Brisson Eckis and the challenges he is facing, but as likely became clear to most readers in the first four issues the series really has two protagonists who are also the antagonists to each other. That second protagonist is Heath Noxxon, a dupe and the leader of the Dupe Underground Resistance. Heath has been gathering power in the shadows with the growth of his resistance community with the ultimate goal to expose the governments lies around dupes to hopefully allow them a life of dignity and to be treated as human. However, Heath is facing multiple issues of his own when we meet him at the start of this second volume as their resources are running thin as their population grows, meaning he is going to have to make some terrible choices.

Byron: Any important new characters in this Skin Police 2 run? If so, can you spotlight one or two here?

Jordan Thomas: We really set the board in the first volume, so this second volume will build on all the characters, plots and relationships we put in motion previously. There aren’t really any major new characters entering the fray, although we do get a few very fun minor characters appear in one or two of the new issues.

Byron: Without spoilers, can you give readers a feel of what they will be coming into in September with Skin Police 2 #1? Just a peek behind the curtain at “double the twists, double the betrayals, and double the bullets”?

Jordan Thomas: If the first volume was the roller coaster ascending, getting higher and higher with everyone on it starting to feel the danger they’re in and the stakes they’re facing, then this second volume is the roller coaster going over the big drop and round the loop and barreling towards a spectacular conclusion. The reveals hinted at in Volume 1 start to leak out and everyone is forced into some serious life or death situations with a whole nation in the balance.

Byron: Talk about reteaming with artist Daniel Gete for this second series of issues. And please spend a minute or two of deserved praise on the awesome art!

Jordan Thomas: Daniel coming on board the series is what really crystallized what it was going to be. He really was the perfect artist for this story capturing the European vibe I wanted whilst delivering this really visceral vicious action but competing it very grounded in a world you feel like you can reach out and touch. I’d say from his work on the first issue of Volume 2 that Daniel is getting even more confident and is having some fun with layouts and action scenes in the book that are going to make this second set of issues even better. He really is an absolute beast of an artist. I’d also like to throw in a mention for our colorist Jason Wordie who just suits the book so well and gives our world a real consistency and unique look unlike anything else on the shelves currently. And we also have Jeff Powell back on letters who is just a total pro and really pulls everything together with his lettering.

Byron: Jordan, my friend, what other projects are slated to come out in which you are involved, inside or outside comics?

Jordan Thomas: Besides Skin Police, I have written another four-issue mini for a licensed property that I think will really appeal to anyone who has enjoyed Skin Police, although it’s not been announced yet. Chris Matthews, my Mugshots co-creator, and I also have a series coming out through Comixology in autumn that should have more details released soon. Beyond that, I have another new book I’m starting the scripts on now, but that won’t see the light of day until late 2026/early 2027, but I’m excited about it.

Dynamic Forces would like to thank Jordan Thomas for taking time out of his busy schedule to answer our questions. Skin Police 2 #1 from Oni Press is slated to be on sale September 3!
