DF INTERVIEW: THE LUNA BROTHERS

The Luna Brothers were born in California and spent most of their childhood overseas. They returned to the United States in their late teens.

Writing and drawing comics since they were children, they both graduated from The Savannah College of Art and Design in the major of Fine Arts, specifically, Sequential Art.

The ULTRA miniseries is their first published work together.

The Luna Brothers currently reside in the Washington DC metro area.

DF: The New Tag Team for this era, as we like to call you, have graced us with beautiful art and two wonderful tales from Ultra to Girls. How are you guys reacting to this tremendous celebrity status in the comic book industry?
Joshua: To be honest, we never considered ourselves in that light at all. It’s funny but once we entered the industry, we’ve never even had time to break out the bubbly and celebrate. I mean, the initial buzz of fulfilling our life-long dream definitely hit us, but once reality set in—it was just nonstop work ever since. {laughs}

But we’re just so glad to be doing what we love to do, and the fact that people are checking out our work and enjoying it is simply amazing for us. So, a huge thank you goes out to all the readers out there. We thank you for the support.

Jonathan: I would definitely never call my self a celebrity. And yes, thanks so much to the supportive fans and retailers out there.

DF: Now, you guys have moved around a lot in your time do to a military child life. Did that help in your creative minds in coming up with such great story telling?
Jonathan: Most of the time we spent overseas was in Italy (seven years). But we didn’t spend much time in the “Italian world.” We kind of took it for granted. And we’ve forgotten most of what little Italian we knew.

DF: Both of you have worked on other projects like The Matrix Comics, PVP, the latest Invincible (issue #25) and now your leap into the Marvel Universe with Spider-Woman: Origin #1. How did you and Marvel get together?
Jonathan: Bendis just called me up one day and said, “Hey, I’m writing a Spider-Woman miniseries--do you want to draw it?” I wanted to say yes very quickly, but it was a real thinker. Josh and I had to figure out if we could really do two books in one month--pencils, inks, and colors for me. Josh will be doing layouts as always.

DF: Now Jonathan, we heard that you like playing the guitar. What is your favorite song to play and what are you currently listening to?
Jonathan: Wow, here’s where I blush. I learned playing every Smashing Pumpkins song I could find. And recently, I try Radiohead and Coldplay, but I don’t play much anymore since I started drawing ULTRA. I’m not very good. I listen to Muse, Deathcab for Cutie, Portishead, Keane…

DF: And Joshua, this one is for you. What type of movies do you like to watch and what is your favorite movie?
Joshua: I watch all kinds of movies—drama, action, horror, indy, blockbuster, chick-flick, comedy, stupid-funny movies, whatever. It’s no secret our work is heavily inspired by films. But I don’t think I really have a favorite. I’ve seen too many to single one out.

DF: Are there any plans in bringing back a second series for Ultra? Joshua: We’ve never said never to a second series, so that’s always a possibility. We really grew attached to these characters, but if we’re going to bring it back, we’d have to do it right. Everyone hates a bad sequel.

DF: What is your favorite Con experience?
Joshua: Whichever one I got the most sleep at. {laughs} Just kidding. I haven’t been to many, but they were all really great experiences.

Jonathan: Baltimore and Heroes. San Diego was a lot of work but very rewarding.

DF: With the popularity of TV series like Smallville, Lost, The Sopranos and many others, would you ever consider making Ultra or Girls into an ongoing Television Series? If so, who would you like to see play as Ethan Daniels or Pearl Penalosa?
Joshua: Definitely. As much as I love movies, TV series have the great advantage of layering character arcs over a much longer span of time. So, you can really, really become immersed in their world and that’s very rewarding.

As far as casting goes? Personally, I’d like to see more unknowns. Once in a while, we get to see an actor whom we’ve never seen before, yet proves he/she was born to play that role. I like surprises like that.

Jonathan: I was actually giving this some thought today. I’d cast for actors that don’t look like they came straight out of a soap opera. I’ve always thought Evangeline Lilly for Pearl.
