DF Interview: Joshua Hale Fialkov takes sibling rivalry to new heights in King

By Byron Brewer

From critically-acclaimed writer Joshua Hale Fialkov (The Bunker, Echoes and I, Vampire) and superstar artists Bernard Chang and Marcelo Maiolo (Green Lantern Corps, Batman Beyond) comes the second issue of King, their post-apocalyptic action/adventure comedy.

King thought he was the only human survivor on Earth -- until he's taken prisoner by Queen, his long-lost sister. Sibling rivalry turns lethal when Queen decides that her brother … must die!

Dynamic Forces sat down with the scribe to get to the bottom of all the grandeur and gaffaws.

Dynamic Forces: Josh, tell us a little about King and his world, for the uninitiated.

Joshua Hale Fialkov: Every one of those sci-fi apocalypses we've been reading fiction about for the past hundred or so years have come true. The aliens have landed and declared war just as the global ice shelf breaks off and rolls across the continents, just as the hybrid animal-people rise up against their makers, and then there's that Cthulu guy who's a huge pain in the Ragnarok. But all that was a few hundred years ago, and now, all we have is King. He's just a dude trying to make his way in the world today, quite possibly taking everything he's got. Bernard, Marcelo and I talk about the book as being a love letter to Jack Kirby, the 80's and, in a broader sense, comics in general. It's a book of pure adventure and joy for me.

DF: Can you hint at what came between he and his sister Queen, presumably when they were young?

Joshua Hale Fialkov: That's a story for a later day. We get a bit of their back-story in issue #2, and it may involve pit fighting and pampers, but, anything more than that is totally just giving stuff away.

DF: Tell us about Queen, specifically her similarities and differences to her brother. Is she villain or anti-heroine?

Joshua Hale Fialkov: For this first story, she's very much one of the bad guys. King might just be onto something this time, and that means aside from the usual desires of everyone around him to murder him, he's now on his way to something they all want. The Life Seed. Whoever controls it controls the world. Or something. It's hard to tell with all of that ridiculous sci-fi mumbo jumbo going on.

DF: Is sibling rivalry, such as displayed here, a subject that interests you? Was there some particular inspiration for the storyline?

Joshua Hale Fialkov: Haha. I love the idea that no matter how destroyed your life becomes, no matter how complex and confusing the world seems, you can always bet on running into the last person you want to see when you least expect to or want to. I know that living in LA, which is a huge city with very little casual “running into” and yet, without a shadow of a doubt, the person I dread seeing is always in line in front of me at the coffee shop. Although that could say more about the sheer volume of people I dread than any sort of universal concept.

DF: Cyborg bears??

Joshua Hale Fialkov: Excuse me. Cyborg KARATE bears.

DF: How is it to work with artist Bernard Chang?

Joshua Hale Fialkov: A genuine dream come true. I've been waiting for a chance to collaborate with my old buddy for a long time. We were supposed to do some work at DC that got kyboshed, and ever since we've been fighting to find the thing that we could do. Getting to do King and to own it and have an amazing partner in Jet City is really more than we could have hoped for.

DF: Josh, anything coming up for you currently or in the near future you would like to discuss?

Joshua Hale Fialkov: Sure. I've got the second TPB volume of The Life After, as well as its sequel Exodus coming up next month from Oni Press, and, of course, Volume 3 of The Bunker and the 10th anniversary hardcover edition of Elk’s Run.

Dynamic Forces would like to thank Joshua Hale Fialkov for taking time out of his busy schedule to answer our questions. King #2 is in stores now!
