DF Interview: Worlds collide as writer Mike Johnson brings Green Lanterns aboard the Enterprise By Byron Brewer Thanks to DC and IDW, the iconic characters of Gene Roddenberry’s science fiction franchise will soon come face-to-face with certified space heroes in the six-part Star Trek/Green Lantern miniseries by writer Mike Johnson (Star Trek) and artist Angel Hernandez (Infinite Crisis: Fight for the Multiverse). To understand all the space and time ramifications of this dream team-up, Dynamic Forces took one of those express whirls around the sun into the future to discuss the story with the scribe himself, Mike Johnson. Dynamic Forces: Mike, tell us how this Star Trek/Green Lantern crossover came to be. Have these realities ever crossed over before? Mike Johnson: They actually have crossed over once before, albeit unofficially. A very Vulcan-looking Lantern makes a cameo in one panel of a Green Lantern issue back in the day. This crossover came about thanks to IDW and DC having had success with previous crossovers like Star Trek/Legion of Super-Heroes. It felt natural to team up two of the most iconic space franchises of all time. DF: In what time period does your story occur, and are we looking at the ORIGINAL Trek characters or the more recent incarnations from the films? Mike Johnson: The story takes place primarily in the Star Trek timeline established by the new movies, so we are seeing the new cast in a crossover for the very first time. DF: Can you tell us what wearers of the Power Rings will be representing the Green Lantern Corps herein? Mike Johnson: I can't say anything without spoiling the surprises to come, but I can say we will see Yellow Klingons and Orange Romulans among others, and each member of the Trek crew will have their own experience with a ring of a different color. Who gets which ring and why is not as predictable as you might think. DF: What is the “Spectrum War"? Mike Johnson: The Spectrum War is the conflict that breaks out at the beginning of the series and encompasses all six issues. It pulls in factions from across the Trek universe and combines them with characters and mythology from the Lantern universe. Hal Jordan and the crew of the Enterprise find themselves trapped in the middle of a situation neither has ever faced before. DF: Can you tell us in an un-spoilery fashion who the big-bad might be? (In these cases, I always hope it's Harry Mudd, lol.) Mike Johnson: In addition to the Klingons and Romulans, we will see familiar Lantern nemeses show up, but the really big bad is Nekron, leader of the Black Lanterns, who delights in finding a strange new universe to corrupt. DF: Mike, what is the most difficult challenge faced in mashing two universes like this together? Mike Johnson: The difficulties are all really opportunities for great fun. I started with a list of things I would want to see: Hal in Kirk's Captain's chair, Kirk and Spock with power rings, and on and on. From there it's a matter of giving the various characters from each universe their chance to shine. It's definitely a challenge, but it could not be more exciting and enjoyable for a writer.
