DF Interview: Curt Pires explores a new world of magic, myth and monsters in ‘Lost Fantasy’

By Byron Brewer

There is a world of mysterious fantasy and horror that exists just beneath the surface of our own. Since first contact was made over 100 years ago, The Great Hunters have kept us safe from the creatures that lurk in the shadows. But last night something broke through, and it’s up to rookie monster hunter Henry Blackheart to stop it!

A fresh take on fantasy from creators Curt Pires (Indigo Children) and Luca Casalanguida (James Bond) in a new ongoing series, Lost Fantasy. Plus: The Indigo Children return in Indigo Children: Exodus! A brand-new serialized story. As soon as I read that and saw Curt’s name, I was on board! Here is what he told me.

Byron Brewer: Curt, Lost Fantasy is really something a bit different for readers. Tell us a bit about the unusual format.

Curt Pires: Each issue is giant-sized – and features a backup story continuing my prior Image Comics series, Indigo Children. We’re committed to delivering the best comics month in, month out at the best value for our readers and this is a cool way to do it!

Byron: How does it feel to be re-teaming with your Money OGN collaborator, artist Luca Casalanguida, on the main story? Talk a little bit about your chemistry in working with Luca.

Curt Pires: Feels great! On top of being an  extremely talented and versatile storyteller, Luca is a consummate professional.

Byron: Give readers a feel for the world Luca and you are creating for Lost Fantasy, the canvas you will be placing readers on in issue #1.

Curt Pires: Lost Fantasy is all about finding a grounded way into fantasy. So alongside our epic creatures and giant swords, we have roach motels and seedy back alley crime scenes.

Byron: Who is Henry Blackheart?

Curt Pires: A rookie monster hunter with a mysterious past and a famous father – Cyrus Blackheart, one of the founding members of The Order of Great Hunters.

Henry’s own past troubles him and causes him to make rash, often self-destructive decisions.

Byron: Who are some of the other important characters in the Lost Fantasy series? Could you spotlight a few here, including maybe some other “Great Hunters”?

Curt Pires: Readers will meet all The Great Hunters in due time. Our second lead Nihlas is very important. He’s a hunter that Henry has a rocky past with. There’s also Val, Henry’s ex-girlfriend, who figures into things as well. We’ve got a big and epic cast.

Byron: What can you tell readers about the exciting news concerning a serialized backup story in the mag that continues Indigo Children? Who will be the artist on the backup and what’s it all about?

Curt Pires: It’s a backup that bridges Volumes 1 and 2 of the book – as well as serves as a jumping-on point for new readers. We’re really happy with it. It’s drawn by series artist Alex Diotto!

Byron: Curt, what can you tell us about your future projects?

Curt Pires: Lots more coming! Working on an original graphic novel with Ryan Quackenbush and lots more!

Dynamic Forces would like to thank Curt Pires for taking time out of his busy schedule to answer our questions. Lost Fantasy #1 from Image Comics is slated to be on sale April 30!
