DF Interview: Stephanie Phillips talks about her love of comics, writing, research and Harley Quinn

By Byron Brewer

Stephanie Phillips feels like she is at the top of the heap these days.

Best known for writing books such as The Descendent, The Butcher Of Paris, Artemis & The Assassin, Red Atlantis, Man Among Ye, Nuclear Family and more, and a retooling of Heavy Metal’s standard bearer Taarna, Phillips has been named new writer on a March relaunch of DC’s Harley Quinn. The Maid of Mischief doesn’t have it easy either, as the writer pits her against Killer Croc!

DF talked with Phillips about a number of things as she starts with the new book following her two-issue stint writing Future State: Harley Quinn in January and February.

Dynamic Forces: Stephanie, were you a fan of comic books growing up? How did you come to love writing, and writing for comic books?

Stephanie Phillips: Absolutely! I was a fan of the Batman Animated Series as a kid in the 90s and that really drove me to comics and I wrote my first comic when I was three years old. It was about a werewolf and my dad had to help add in the dialogue boxes. I’ve always loved writing and it’s something I’ve been excited about for as long as I can remember.

DF: Who were writers – in or out of comics – that served as your muses, your inspirations for going after the printed word?

Stephanie Phillips: I always say Bruce Springsteen is an inspiration because I’m really interested in how he portrays this kind of false sense of “Americana.” It’s something I like to explore in my own writing and, not for nothing, but Bruce is this really prolific, creative powerhouse of ideas and stories. It’s inspiring to listen to him talk about the creative process and his own body of work.

DF: What was the first book you handled in comics? How did that feel?

Stephanie Phillips: The first book I wrote was called Devil Within for Black Mask Studios. It was a horror story with art by Maan House and Dee Cunniffe and it was a big learning experience for me to tackle my first miniseries and get the feel for the space and pacing of writing a comic book. There’s obviously a lot I would improve since it was the first thing I ever wrote, but I try to think of each new project as a chance to learn more and continue improving.

DF: What was THE comic you have done or are doing that says to you and others, “I have arrived. I am a comic book writer?”

Stephanie Phillips: I think being on my first ongoing with the Harley Quinn series felt that way. I love all of the creator-owned books I’ve done, and the smaller books I’ve been a part of at DC, but Harley is the first chance I’ve had to really write something for a prolonged period of time, and she’s a really popular character that I am getting to make my own.

DF: Having worked with you, I know that you are a monster when it comes to researching a story’s locale and time period… even if the one in your book may be in an alternate Earth or time. Where does this drive come from?

Stephanie Phillips: I like to read and I like to learn new things because I’m interested in a wide variety of topics. I also think I pull a lot of inspiration from research and the things I’m currently excited about learning. It’s always good fodder for more story ideas.

DF: During the pandemic, you made a journey over to Heavy Metal. Tell us about that.

Stephanie Phillips: Taarna has been such a cool project to work on with many different artists and a really cool company that is looking to really expand their line and make some really unique comics. Taarna is the most “cosmic” thing I’ve ever written and I think it stretched my creative muscles in a new way to have to think outside of the research component that is a part of a lot of my writing, and just try to create something that maybe never existed until now. I’m really proud of the product and worlds we’ve created with that series.

DF: Stephanie, tell readers what you might have coming up currently or in the near-future. You say you might be doing some stuff with DC’s bad girl, Harley Quinn?

Stephanie Phillips: I am the ongoing writer for the Harley Quinn series that launches [this month] with artist Riley Rossmo. It’s an all-new ongoing series that sees Harley Quinn back in Gotham for the first time in a while. I’m also working on a story for Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight with Max Dunbar.

Dynamic Forces would like to thank Stephanie Phillips for taking time out of her busy schedule to answer our questions. Her latest book, Harley Quinn #1 from DC Comics, is slated to be released March 23rd!
