WAITING FOR TOMMY: TALKING ABOUT STAN LEE
By Richard Johnston

RICHARD: What kind of projects?

JORDAN: A lot of movie scripts and treatments, TV pilots, an aborted strip for Playboy that he put together with John Romita. All sorts of things that haven't received wide attention, but that we found at the Stan Lee Archives. The sheer number of projects is what surprised us the most.

RICHARD: Your favourite?

TOM: Playboy.

JORDAN: Definitely the Playboy strip. It's pretty awesome.

JUST IMAGINE STAN LEE AND JERRY ORDWAY CREATING THE JLA

RICHARD: Ah, c'mon, define awesome...

JORDAN: Well, bizarre and a bit creepy, but in a hilarious way, because it's Stan trying to do humorous porn using his old-school "Face Front, True Believers" shtick. Lots of cool names like "Clitanna" and "Magnificus the Mighty," giant warrior-men with penis-shaped heads. Testicular- and vaginal-themed imagery. It doesn't get any better than that.

RICHARD: That. that sounds fairly awesome. So any plans to do Shooter?

TOM: Excuse me? Oh, you mean a bio. No.

JORDAN: No thank you. I believe he's writing an autobio at the moment. His reign of terror is interesting enough, but I'm not sure he contributed as much to comics as Stan Lee, so there's not a lot of room for cultural analysis.

RICHARD: I've still got a fair few New Universe comics you know.

STAN LEE AND THE RISE AND FALL OF THE AMERICAN COMIC BOOK by Tom Spurgeon and Jordan Raphael will be in bookstores for September and comics shops in October (check the current Previews on page 390). Rich Johnston writes Lying In The Gutters.
