WAITING
FOR TOMMY - HEIDI MACDONALD
By Richard Johnston RICHARD:
Research? Are you mad?
HEIDI:
It's a strange phenomena I've been watching lately about the
internet. Once a fact is out there, it's there pretty much
forever. And facts that aren't from the internet - like the
in-depth information you read in books, is lost to the Google
Universe, so it becomes forgotten. I'm not saying I can do
it all the time, but perhaps I can introduce a new fact to
the electronic world mind now and then. I certainly don't
want to introduce a misstatement, although it happens.
RICHARD:
You've been labelled custodian of comics' deepest darkest
secrets. Any chance you can let slip a classic from the old
days?
HEIDI:
Back when I was a very young twerp in comics, there were only
about 20 women in the whole comics industry. As a joke, I
said I was making a chart of who had slept with who in comics.
Women were the nexus of the chart, let me tell you. Eventually
I got on the chart myself, so I had to stop. And no, it doesn't
exist.
RICHARD:
Don't care. I'm going to start one up.
HEIDI:
It wouldn't be as dramatic any more, because there are lots
more women in comics. I don't know what deep, dark secrets
of comics there really are, except that all human beings always
act true to their deepest nature. Once you figure that out,
nothing is surprising.
RICHARD:
Even Dave Sim?
HEIDI:
I used to talk to Dave, so I understand him about as well
as the other people who used to talk to him. He's coming down
the line, isn't he? Everyone jokes that he's going to pull
an Elliot Smith when he finishes Cerebus, but that's far too
predictable for him. He'll surprise us all.
RICHARD:
How much of a gossip are you, Heidi? You used to have quite
the rep for it...
HEIDI:
I did? I like to know the real reasons for things. Also, I
just happen to know a lot of people who are peripheral to
a lot of different aspects of the business. You have to be
able to put two and two together. If that makes me a gossip,
I guess I am.
