When
the man owns the company and wants a column, he gets a column
and this week, Nick takes another trip to the comic book store!
[Ed. Note: Nick threw us another curve, so the guest reviews
are pushed back again, but we're pretty sure he'll need a break
one of these weeks and we'll be able to squeeze them in!]

BATMAN:
HUSH HARDCOVER |
Well,
first off I would like to thank Jim
Lee for his time on Friday! I drove up to Manhattan,
had lunch with him, he signed some comics and we discussed
the state of the industry. We had a great, constructive
conversation. We agreed to disagree on a few things
and it was a lot of fun. Jim is definitely one of the
gentlemen of this industry. He is not only one of the
industry's best artists, but he is one kindest and most
generous people I have ever met. (He's also extremely
generous with his time, obviously as he made time for
me.)
Jim's
work on Batman
-- if you're one of the few that have missed it go check
it out in the brand-new Batman: Hush Hardcover Collection
-- is nothing short of astonishing! |
This work
shows why Batman is one of the best books in comics and the
# 1 selling book month in and month out. From this fanboy's
point of view, I would love to see Jim tackle Wonder Woman
next (since he also tackled Superman
in issue #612 of Batman)!

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN “UNMASKED”
BUST |
Next
on the list -- and going from one of the great artists
of today to one of the greatest artists of all time --
let's talk about John
Romita's interview in the new issue of The Comics
Journal [#252]. I just picked the issue (TCJ is one of
the longest running comics magazine of all time), and
really enjoyed Tom Spurgeon's insightful interview with
this master artist. John is unbelievably self-deprecating
in so many of his comments, yet this is one of the true
innovators of comics and one of the greatest artists of
all time. Having only read about 20 pages of the interview
so far, I think Tom has done one of the best jobs interviewing
John Romita; Exploring Romita's motivations, accomplishments,
and turning out the definitive John Romita interviews. |
The only
thing that could make this piece perfectly well-rounded would
be for Tom to interview John Romita Jr. next, just to really
follow up on the family legacy that Sr. started. Again, this
is one of the most incredible interviews you'll ever read,
and I believe all fans should be reading this right now --
'Nuff Said!

BATTLE
OF THE PLANETS PREMIERE TRADING CARDS |
Our
boys at Top
Cow release two electrifying books this week, both
of which are incredible and a lot of fun. First off is
Battle
of the Planets/Thundercats
with Munier Sharrieff, Alvin Lee and Rob Ross -- this
book is pure magic! This is one of the few crossovers
that makes you look forward to more crossovers in the
future. Hopefully publishers will appreciate the fact
that when a crossover is executed well, that's what gets
the fans excited and Top Cow has definitely done that
with the Battle of the Planets/Thundercats (ands some
beautiful cover art by J. Scott Campbell and Alex Ross).
Then we have Battle of the Planets #9, which features
a nice little wrap and sets up the grand finale coming
in issue #12. If you haven't picked this series up yet,
this is a great issue to start! |

MARVEL
UNIVERSE: THE END CANVAS GICLEE BY JIM STARLIN |
You
know I said it with issue #3 of The End -- Jim Starlin
still has that magic and he proves it with each and every
issue of this awesome series. This issue Thanos, the destroyer
of worlds, comes in and saves Dr. Doom's life in his battle
against the Pharoah. Starlin's cosmic adventure features
every cosmic entity in the Marvel Universe -- Captain
Marvel, the Silver Surfer, the Mighty Galactus, the mysterious
Stranger, The Watcher Zeus, Thor and even the Hulk! Definitely
jump on this if you haven't yet, because this story is
more than worth reading. |

ELEKTRA
“WALL OF FIRE” LITHOGRAPH |
And
finally this week, we've got Elektra
#23 with one of the most incredible and beautiful covers
I've seen in years. The story is cool and interesting,
but the artwork by Sean Chen and Tom Palmer is top notch.
This is a great stand alone story to start your Elektra
run. Don't miss out fan boys! See ya next week! |
