'THE SACRIFICE OF DARKNESS' GRAPHIC NOVEL DEBUTS FROM BOOM! STUDIOS
01/24/20 @ 4:18 pm EST
Source: BOOM! Studios | Categories: MIsc | Comments (0) | E-mail Article | Add a Comment

BOOM! Studios announced today a new original graphic novel, THE SACRIFICE OF DARKNESS, from New York Times bestselling author Roxane Gay, writer Tracy Lynne Oliver, artist Rebecca Kirby, and colorist James Fenner, adapting Gay’s New York Times bestselling short story “We Are the Sacrifice of Darkness” into a full-length graphic novel and expanding the short story about a tragic event that forever bathes the world in darkness, available in October 2020.

Follow a woman and a man’s powerful journey through this new landscape as they discover love, family, and the true light in a world seemingly robbed of any. As they challenge the world’s notions of identity, guilt, and survival, they find that no matter the darkness, there remain sources of hope that can pierce the veil.

Roxane Gay’s writing appears in Best American Nonrequired Reading 2018, Best American Mystery Stories 2014, Best American Short Stories 2012, Best Sex Writing 2012, Harper’s Bazaar, A Public Space, McSweeney’s, Tin House, Oxford American, American Short Fiction, Virginia Quarterly Review, and many others. She is a contributing opinion writer for The New York Times. She is the author of the books Ayiti, An Untamed State, the New York Times bestselling Bad Feminist, the nationally bestselling Difficult Women and New York Times bestselling Hunger: A Memoir of My Body. She is also the author of World of Wakanda for Marvel and the editor of Best American Short Stories 2018. She is currently at work on film and television projects, a book of writing advice, an essay collection about television and culture, and a YA novel entitled The Year I Learned Everything. In 2018, she won a Guggenheim fellowship.

“Some stories don't leave you and such was the case with my short story ‘We are the Sacrifice of Darkness.’ When BOOM! Studios approached me about writing a graphic novel, I immediately knew what kind of story I wanted to tell--one about family and sorrow, faith that survives in a world of darkness, true love and an indelible bond between two people with the world against them,” said author Roxane Gay. “It has been a thrill to be able to bring breadth and depth to the world I created in my short story, and to be able to do so with one of my favorite writers, Tracy Lynne Oliver. She is an amazing collaborator who always pushes me creatively. We are excited to have this graphic novel out in the world later this year.”

Tracy Lynne Oliver is a writer based in Los Angeles. She has been published online at a variety of places such as Medium, Fanzine and Occulum. Her story, This Weekend was chosen to be in Best Microfiction 2019. This is her first graphic novel adaptation.

“‘We are the Sacrifice of Darkness’ was one of my favorite Roxane Gay stories, so I was more than thrilled with the opportunity to transform it into a graphic novel format,” said writer Tracy Lynne Oliver. “I once again fell in love with the characters and their struggles and yearning for love, warmth and light in this dark, cold world they were thrust into. I am so excited for readers to see this story brought to life in such a visually stunning way.”

Rebecca Kirby is a comic artist and illustrator based out of Philadelphia best known for her original comics, Biopsy and Cramps, which have been featured on Vice and Waves, featured in Fantagraphics Now: The New Comics Anthology #4.

“It's been an incredible experience working with everyone as we create a graphic novel full of striking contrasts and tender moments splashed across the page,” said artist Rebecca Kirby. “I've had a great time illustrating the beautiful story that Roxane and Tracy have crafted, and I hope fans will have just as great an experience reading it.”

THE SACRIFICE OF DARKNESS is the latest release from BOOM! Studios’ award-winning Archaia imprint, home to inspiring graphic novels such as Big Black: Stand at Attica by Frank “Big Black” Smith, Jared Reinmuth, and Ameziane, We Served the People by Emei Burell, The Realist by Asaf Hanuka, Girl on Film by Cecil Castellucci and Vicky Leta, Melissa Duffy, V. Gagnon & Jon Berg, New World by David Jesus Vignolli, About Betty’s Boob by Vero Cazot and Julie Rocheleau, Waves by Ingrid Chabbert and Carole Maurel, The Grand Abyss Hotel by Marcos Prior and David Rubín, and more.

“It’s an honor to bring new dimension into Roxane Gay’s story, alongside Tracy, Rebecca, and James who have really evolved into an exciting, singular narrative voice,” said Dafna Pleban, Senior Editor, BOOM! Studios. “Grappling with questions of hope, culpability and identity, the graphic novel medium brings to life a world struggling to move on with a visual intensity and specificity that will make for a whole new reading experience for devoted Roxane Gay fans and new readers alike.”

Print copies of THE SACRIFICE OF DARKNESS will be available for sale in October 2020 at local comic book shops (use comicshoplocator.com to find the nearest one), bookstores, or at the BOOM! Studios webstore. Digital copies can be purchased from content providers, including comiXology, iBooks, Google Play, and Madefire.

'BAMBI' REMAKE IN THE WORKS WITH 'CAPTAIN MARVEL' WRITERS
01/24/20 @ 4:12 pm EST
Source: Hollywood Reporter | Categories: Disney | Comments (0) | E-mail Article | Add a Comment

Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Lindsey Beer will pen the adaptation of the 1942 animated Disney classic.

The young prince is returning to the forest.

In the latest move to turn its animated classics into live-action features, Disney has set its sights on one of its most storied: Bambi.

The studio has hired Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Captain Marvel, Tomb Raider) and Lindsey Beer (Sierra Burgess Is a Loser, Chaos Walking) to pen the screenplay for the live-action remake.

Depth of Field, the production banner run by Chris and Paul Weitz and Andrew Miano and which is coming off the success of indie darling The Farewell, will produce the new iteration.

The original movie, released in 1942, told the story of a young fawn named Bambi as he learns his place in the forest. With his two best friends, a rabbit named Thumper and a skunk named Flower, Bambi comes of age as he faces the joys and heartache — cue the loss of a parent — of growing up.

The film received three Oscar nominations — best song, best score and best sound — but was not initially held in high esteem as it is in modern times.

Insiders say the studio views Bambi as a type of companion piece to its remakes The Jungle Book and The Lion King, which were not live-action per se but certainly made to look that way. The two, both hits (Lion King generated $1.65 billion when it was released last year), were made using envelope-pushing CG technology to create ground-breaking photo-realistic and immersive worlds of nature. The studio is cognizant that Bambi is less epic in scope and story and is not aiming to shoehorn a larger narrative onto the classic tale. (via THR)

RETAILERS REORDER DEBUT ISSUE OF 'UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY'

Image Comics has fast-tracked a fourth printing of Undiscovered Country #1 in order to keep up with the mounting pressure from fans looking to jump on board for the new series by New York Times bestselling writers Scott Snyder (Batman, Justice League, American Vampire, Wytches) and Charles Soule (Curse Words, novels The Oracle Year, Anyone) and artist Giuseppe Camuncoli (The Amazing Spider-Man, Darth Vader, Hellblazer).

In Undiscovered Country, readers journey into an unknown region that was once the United States of America—a land that’s become shrouded in mystery and literally walled-off from the rest of the world for decades. A small expedition enters the former US in search of a cure to a humanity-ending pandemic. They travel inward and learn the secrets of what America has become; each member seeking their own form of truth in the undiscovered country.

The series was acquired early on by New Republic Pictures after a competitive bidding war for potential franchise development with Snyder and Soule attached to adapt the screenplay and serve as executive producers alongside Camuncoli. John Hilary Shepherd will oversee development.

Undiscovered Country #1, fourth printing (Diamond Code DEC198445) will be available at comic book shops on Wednesday, February 19.

Undiscovered Country #2, second printing (Diamond Code OCT199140) is available at comic book shops now.

Undiscovered Country is also available for purchase across many digital platforms, including the official Image Comics iOS app, Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, comiXology, and Google Play.

In 2017, Polarity founder David Steward II acquired the original comic book blog turned influential voice in pop culture. The Beat. Following a limited partnership to provide additional resources and infrastructure, The Beat returns to its original independence under founder Heidi MacDonald in the new year.

“I'm incredibly grateful to Dave Steward and the Polarity team for their partnership these last two years” says The Beat founder Heidi MacDonald. “With this participation, The Beat was able to reach new heights and expand to cover the incredible diversity of the comics medium and the culture it inspires. Now I'm incredibly excited to take The Beat back and build on what we accomplished to become even more essential to readers and the industry.”

“Our partnership with Heidi and The Beat was intended to empower the site to reach new heights and grow the audience for inclusive comics coverage” says Polarity’s David Steward II. “Over these past few years, we have worked together to ensure she succeeded in that goal, and the site’s reputation as THE authoritative voice of our industry, presenting insider knowledge in a format that is welcoming to a broad audience. We wish Heidi continued success and prominence in the years to come.”

EWAN MCGREGOR ADDRESSES OBI-WAN KENOBI SCRIPT PROBLEMS: 'IT'S NOT AS DRAMATIC AS IT MIGHT SEEM'

Shooting of Disney+’s Obi-Wan Kenobi has been pushed to next year following the news that show’s writer is being replaced.

“I think we start shooting early next year as opposed to summer this year,” Ewan McGregor, who will reprise his role of Obi-Wan Kenobi in the series, told Variety at the Birds of Prey fan event at Hollywood and Highland. “I think the scripts are great. They’re in really good shape. They want them to be better. I think we keep our same airdate. All good.”

Sources told the site just a couple of hours before the event that Disney+ and Lucasfilm are looking for new writers following the departure of scribe Hossein Amini.

McGregor insisted the upheaval is not as “dramatic” as fans may think. “I didn’t realize until we got here tonight and everybody is going, ‘Oh, my god!’” McGregor said. “But it’s not really as dramatic as it might seem.”
VAULT ANNOUNCES 'HUNDRED WOLVES' BY NOVELIST MYKE COLE AND ARTIST TONY AKINS

Source: Vault Comics | Categories: MIsc | Comments (0) | E-mail Article | Add a Comment

Vault Comics is thrilled to announce HUNDRED WOLVES, a historically inspired fantasy comic series co-created by award-winning novelist Myke Cole (The Sacred Throne Trilogy, The Shadow Ops Trilogy) and master artist Tony Akins (Fables, Hellblazer, Wonder Woman), with colors Vladimir Popov, letters by Jim Campbell, and designed by Tim Daniel.

HUNDRED WOLVES is set during the Siege of Vienna in 1683. Andrei and Oksana have left the Cossack band to raise their daughter on a farm they hold from the noble Count Ostoja, but the raiding life isn’t done with them. Both the Hundred Wolves and the couple’s new liege lord wish to employ their deadly skills—and neither will take no for an answer.

“The Siege of Vienna in 1683 is one of the most dramatic, visually arresting, and movie-ready stories in the history of warfare," said Myke Cole. "It arguably decided the future of the European and Turkish worlds both. And almost nobody has even heard of it."

"I only discovered it by chance (being a historian, I chase these things) and was immediately electrified," added Cole. "It is such an amazing story, a heroic defense in the face of arguably hopeless odds and a stirring, last-minute rescue from an unexpected quarter. I wanted to tell it to the world."

"As a historian, I can convey the drama in text, but no words can properly convey the sheer visual splendor - the tossing wings of the Polish knights, the fluttering white hoods of the Turkish janissaries, the sparking kick of matchlock muskets sounding the death knell of the mounted knight and heralding the dawn of modern warfare. And above all, the pluck and swagger of the Cossacks, with their punk-rock haircuts, flashing sabers, and belly-laughing defiance of imperial authority," said Cole.

"The HUNDRED WOLVES pitch document landed right where it needed to land: my lap," added Tony Akins." I’ll just say it was kind of like a mix of romance and inspiration, my initial reaction to the story and setting. It had everything, and it was heavily based in history, and I love histories. So yeah, I’m that brother from the South Side of Chicago who’s drawing a story about a family in 17th Century Ukraine who are caught between a rock and a hard place. That translates to some of my own experiences as an American, and particularly as an African-American."

The full synopsis of HUNDRED WOLVES can be found below:

"The Hundred Wolves are bloody-handed terrors of the steppe. From celebrated author Myke Cole (The Sacred Throne Trilogy, The Shadow Ops Trilogy) and venerable artist Tony Akins (Fables, Hellblazer, Wonder Woman) comes a story of war and family, blending historical fiction with a touch of fantasy."

HUNDRED WOLVES #1 will hit store shelves in April 2020. The first issue will drop with a special Pulp & Paint variant cover by Nathan Gooden & Tim Daniel.
