ONLY KISS CAN DEFEAT ZOMBIES IN NEW SERIES BY ETHAN SACKS!
08/22/19 @ 2:08 pm EST
Source: Dynamite | Categories: Dynamite | Comments (0) | E-mail Article | Add a Comment
Dynamite announces the next epic chapter in the comic book chronicles of the legendary rock band, KISS: Zombies!

After all, what can possibly happen after "The End" than a full-blown zombie apocalypse? That is the screwed up status quo that writer Ethan Sacks (Old Man Hawkeye, Star Wars) and artist Rodney Buchemi (Death of Hawkman) will tackle in this new limited series. Assisted on colors and letters by Dijjo Lima (Assassin's Creed, Doc Savage) and Troy Peteri (Amazing Spider-Man, Witchblade). Picking up decades after the fall of civilization, humans are now an endangered species isolated to strongholds such as the central New Detroit. These undead are attracted to sound, so music and all related iconography have been banned. Especially that of the greatest band in history. However, a group of teenagers are not going to live this way and set out on a quest to track down KISS! Who may ultimately be the ultimate weapon to turn the tide against the zombies! Sacks has described the series as a cocktail of Land of the Dead, A Quiet Place, Seven Samurai and even Footloose! This marks the first comic book work for Sacks outside of Marvel, where he's expanded the "Old Man" franchise to Hawkeye and Star-Lord to much critical and fan acclaim. He's got history with the band though, through his previous career as a journalist.

"In my two and a half decades as an entertainment journalist, one of my most proud achievements was interviewing Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley for a 40th anniversary retrospective of KISS," said writer Ethan Sacks. "After all, this was a band that had provided the soundtrack for much of my life, and their eerie black and white makeup aesthetic seared itself in my brain during my childhood when I first spied those album covers in an older cousin's record collection. So, all these years later, I jumped at the chance to write a KISS comic. Then my editor, Kevin Ketner, went and threw in zombies too. Allowing a George Romero uber-fan to pen a book about the undead is like waving slivers of brain in front of an actual zombie."

"It's great to be back with KISS. The first series I did was a sensational experience," said artist Rodney Buchemi. "Working on Ethan's scripts has been great fun on every page and every panel. And of course, drawing zombies is fun!"

"With each new KISS series, we try and push the mythology of this iconic band even farther and surprise fans," said Nick Barrucci, Dynamite CEO and Publisher. "We've been thinking over this zombies concept for a long time, but knew a great writer was needed to execute it as well as have the needed passion for both the band and the cultural hallmark of zombies. We literally could not have found a better match than Ethan, and we're honored to work with him as he expands his career to other publishers." The series features covers by a spectacular four-piece of artists. The unimpeachable king of comic book zombies, Arthur Suydam (Marvel Zombies, DCeased), fronts the group. Fan-favorite Stuart Sayger (Vampirella vs. Reanimator) is back for his third straight string of KISS covers! Interior artist Buchemi will also be contributing covers to each issue. While of course the iconic band themselves will be represented in life by photo covers pulled from the archives.

Plus, the previous KISS series, The End by Amy Chu (Red Sonja, Poison Ivy) and Edu Menna (Twilight Zone, ZNation) will be collected in a paperback the same month as the debut of Zombies.
KISS: Zombies #1 and the KISS: The End TP will be solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors’ September 2019 Previews catalog, the premier source of merchandise for the comic book specialty market, and slated for release in November 2019. Comic book fans are encouraged to preorder copies of the issue with their local comic book retailers. It will also be available for individual customer purchase through digital platforms courtesy of Comixology, Kindle, iBooks, Google Play, Dynamite Digital, ComicsPlus, and more!
UNCOVERING THE SECRET HISTORY OF THE X-MEN IN 'POWERS OF X' #3
08/22/19 @ 10:16 am EST
Source: Marvel | Categories: Marvel | Comments (0) | E-mail Article | Add a Comment

WARNING! THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS SPOILERS ABOUt 'POWERS OF X' #3 FROM MARVEL COMICS, ON SALE NOW!

One of the reasons that Jonathan Hickman’s HOUSE OF X and POWERS OF X has us hooked is that he knows the value of a good surprise. Each issue has its own revelation that adds additional context to the unfolding story.

This is the secret history of the X-Men that even the team never knew. Because how can anyone remember events that never happened?

Moira X can. That is her mutant power, after all. To live through each lifetime, and maintain all of her memories when she is born again in the past. POWERS OF X #3 by Hickman and artist R.B. Silva takes us through the end of Moira’s ninth life by revealing the X-Men Year 100 flash-forwards are part of that timeline. It’s not the future of the Marvel Universe as we know it...but it used to be.

PoX

Moira’s ninth life was the one where she sided with Apocalypse, because neither Professor X nor Magneto were enough to save her people. This is why Wolverine can call Apocalypse “boss.” In this lifetime, the X-Men were founded by Apocalypse and Moira, rather than Charles Xavier or Magneto.

This issue also sheds some light on the Chimeras, including Rasputin and Cardinal. While Rasputin clearly seems to combine the powers of Magik and Colossus, POWERS OF X #3’s ancillary material suggests that the rest of her genetic makeup comes from Kitty Pryde, X-23, Quintin Quire, and Gunther Bain AKA Unus the Untouchable. As for Cardinal, his DNA includes genetic material from Nightcrawler, Jean Grey, and “Freeman.”

It’s also worth noting that the Magneto-like character wasn’t Magneto at all. Instead, he was a second generation Chimera known as North whose genetic donors were Emma Frost and Lorna Dane, Magneto’s daughter.

The bulk of the issue depicts a mission to discover the exact date that Nimrod went online. This may explain why the Nimrod of the primary timeline had such a different personality than the one in Moria IX’s lifetime. The Nimrod in this world barely tolerates humans, and gleefully exterminates mutants. He may very well be the deadliest threat to the X-Men, because not even the immortal Apocalypse can defeat Nimrod head-to-head.

In POWERS OF X #2, Apocalypse told his X-Men that he would have sacrificed all of them to discover when Nimrod went online. But he was also willing to sacrifice himself to make sure that Wolverine escaped with the intel and delivered it safely to Mother Akkaba—that’s Moria, in case there was any confusion. To prolong her life, Apocalypse apparently had Moria in stasis until he could deliver the information to her so she could use it in her next life. Moments after Moira digests the info, Wolverine “sends her on her way.”

This tells us that Moira’s life is what holds her various timelines in place. Once she’s gone back to the beginning, it’s essentially a reset. This also suggests that Moira may still be alive in the X-Men Year 1,000 flash-forwards, but that has yet to be confirmed. If she wasn’t still around, that timeline might have changed as well...

Hickman closed out the issue with another outline of Moira’s various lives. Conspicuous by its absence was Moira’s sixth life. That life was also left out of the timelines listed in HOUSE OF X #2. What secrets are so important that Moira’s entire sixth life is still a mystery to us? We know that her fifth life ended when the Sentinels wiped out Xavier and his mutant sanctuary. Moira then spent her seventh life trying to eradicate the Trask bloodline to prevent the Sentinels from ever existing. But what happened in between?

Perhaps the answers still lie ahead in HOUSE OF X and POWERS OF X.

GARTH ENNIS RETURNS TO MARVEL WITH ARTIST JACEN BURROWS THIS NOVEMBER FOR 'PUNISHER SOVIET'

Source: Marvel | Categories: Marvel | Comments (0) | E-mail Article | Add a Comment

As long as there is trouble in the Marvel Universe, the Punisher's work is never done -- and in November, he's facing a formidable foe while finding a kindred spirit. But this new chapter for Frank Castle is also special because it marks the return of a legendary storyteller -- Garth Ennis comes back to Marvel to write PUNISHER SOVIET, and he's bringing along his frequent collaborator, artist Jacen Burrows, who also provides a variant cover. Paolo Rivera provides the main cover, shown here:

Punisher Soviet cover

PUNISHER SOVIET (2019) #1

PUNISHER SOVIET is not just a return to Marvel for Ennis, but also a return to Frank Castle. Ennis has written for the Punisher many times before, each time exploring different aspects of Frank Castle's story, whether he was at war abroad or with himself. Now that Castle is in a position to team up with someone who might understand his motivations, Ennis is the perfect writer to take him on his latest quest for justice. On his love for the character, Ennis says: “There’s a brilliant simplicity about Frank. He never changes -- in an ever-shifting and evolving world, he remains resolutely himself.”Page from Punisher Soviet

PUNISHER SOVIET (2019) #1

While Frank's team-up may be unusual for the Punisher, Ennis commented on his reunion with Burrows: “Jacen is easily one of my top ten collaborators -- he’s a master storyteller, an expert at both characters and action. We did some of my all-time favorite work together, such as Crossed, Wormwood, and -- particularly relevant for readers of PUNISHER SOVIET -- 303.”

In PUNISHER SOVIET, Frank Castle faces the wrath of the Russian mob when twelve of them end up dead at his feet -- but he wasn't the one who pulled the trigger. Who is the one beating Frank to the bad guys? You'll have to pick up PUNISHER SOVIET #1 this November!

'KRYPTON' SPINOFF 'LOBO' COULD STILL HAPPEN, CLAIMS SHOWRUNNER

Screen Rant reports that the Lobo spinoff could still happen, despite Krypton’s cancellation by SyFy.

There were immediate plans for a Lobo spinoff, but with the cancelation of Krypton, those plans seemed like a pipe dream. Syfy went from becoming the home of an extended Superman universe, to nothing. However, in a tweet from Krypton showrunner Cam Welsh eulogizing the show, he mentions that Lobo isn’t dead yet.

“Let me say this: despite what you’ve heard, the Lobo spin-off is far from dead. And I’ll have more to say about it in a separate post,” Welsh wrote as part of his Krypton Farewell tweet.

Emmett J. Scanlan played Lobo in four episodes of Krypton and was also signed on to star in the spinoff.
SPIDER-MAN 3: JON WATTS REPORTEDLY NOT ATTACHED TO DIRECT

Contrary to earlier reports, Spider-Man: Far From Home director Jon Watts is not yet attached to direct Spider-Man 3 for Sony. After becoming Sony's highest-grossing movie of all-time, the future of the Spider-Man franchise appeared to be brighter than ever. It was believed that the third film would be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but that is currently not the case. Marvel Studios is no longer set to be involved with future Spider-Man films following talks over the deal being restructured falling apart.

This shocking piece of news has many different angles to it and is continuously evolving. When it was initially revealed, the reports stated that Disney wants to co-finance and split the profits of any future Spider-Man film that Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige were involved in. Sony reportedly balked at that proposal -- later blamed Disney for the deal falling through -- and reportedly are planning to make two more movies starring Tom Holland as Peter Parker aka Spider-Man. At the time, it was also reported that Watts would direct both installments.

If Watts does not return to direct Spider-Man 3, the reason such a decision is made could be telling. Sony could potentially look to find their guy to bring Spider-Man into their universe and may decide that Watts is not the right fit for such a move. But, he's also directed two critically adored films and is behind two of the most successful Spider-Man movies ever. That said, this could also be Watts deciding to walk away from the franchise if Marvel Studios isn't involved. He was hired to shepherd Spider-Man into the MCU after all, and if he can no longer access parts of the story he was building, then that could be reason enough for him to move on. (via Screen Rant)

IDW PUBLISHING AND CMON LIMITED ANNOUNCE RISING SUN COMIC BOOK SERIES
08/21/19 @ 3:38 pm EST
Source: IDW | Categories: IDW | Comments (0) | E-mail Article | Add a Comment

Rising Sun, the award-winning board game published by CMON Limited and designed by Eric M. Lang, will see its epic setting, feudal combat, and political intrigue adapted to comics in an all-new comic book series from IDW Publishing.

Co-written by industry legend Ron Marz and David Rodriguez (the creative team behind IDW’s Skylanders) and illustrated by Martín Cóccolo (Star Trek: Year Five), the three-issue miniseries will debut its first issue in November, and – as an added bonus – each issue of Rising Sun will feature exclusive content to enhance the game-playing experience for dedicated fans.

IDW’s Rising Sun storyline introduces Chiyoko of the Koi Clan, leader of a group of powerful warriors – the best each clan has to offer – on a mission to save Japan from dragons and monsters. But perhaps the greatest threat she faces is not the many monsters who are ravaging the country… but her very own team!

“When I first saw the game, I immediately knew it was a world I wanted to play in,” says Ron Marz. “As soon as I found out that Rising Sunwas going to move into comics, I was the first one jumping up and down with my hand raised, yelling, ‘Pick me! Pick me!’”

Rising Sun has a huge amount of world-building and deep backstory with the Clans, and it’s been great creating characters representing aspects of those clans and throwing them together,” says David Rodriguez. “I've had the pleasure of working with Ron, Martin, and game designer Eric M. Lang on other projects. They're great talents, and IDW pulling them all together was a huge win for the book.”

“As an artist, it's a real treat to be a part of a comic adaption of this caliber,” says Martín Cóccolo. “The game is absolutely gorgeous and hopefully fans will find that I’ve treated the source material with respect. It's a pleasure and a responsibility that I'm thrilled to take.”

“Considering that Rising Sun is a game about myths and legends, we are extremely honored to have such a legendary creative team working to bring a whole new dimension to the title,” says CMON’s Geoff Skinner. “We can’t wait for this story to add a whole new narrative dimension to the way people play the game.”

For information on how to secure copies of Rising Sun, please contact your local comic shop or visit www.comicshoplocator.com to find a store near you.
