'SWAMP THING' ORDER REDUCED AS DC UNIVERSE'S ROLE IN WARNERMEDIA STREAMING PLANS UNCLEAR

Source: Hollywood Reporter | Categories: DC | Comments (0) | E-mail Article | Add a Comment

Three episodes of the drama, set to premiere May 31 on the streaming platform.

THR reports that Swamp Thing producers Warner Bros. Television have reduced the order for the scripted drama series based on the beloved comics created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson. Sources tell the site that the original 13-episode order for the drama has been cut to 10 after experienced creative differences with its home at Warners-backed streaming platform DC Universe. The series will stick with its planned May 31 premiere date.

Warners and DC Universe declined comment.

The news of the episode reduction happens to come as DC Universe parent company WarnerMedia is plotting a larger direct-to-consumer streaming platform. The OTT platform, expected to launch in the fourth quarter of 2019, will feature scripted originals as well as content from corporate siblings HBO, Turner's TBS and TNT, among others. The platform will be overseen by former NBC Entertainment president Bob Greenblatt and Turner's Kevin Reilly as WarnerMedia CEO John Stankey makes the streaming platform a top goal for the company.

WarnerMedia has yet to reveal its larger plans for its streaming platform, which will compete with fellow upstarts Disney+ (launching Nov. 12) and Apple (in the fall) as well as Comcast (2020). Disney+ unveiled its streaming plans last week during a nearly four-hour presentation to investors that impressed both Hollywood and Wall Street. Their platform will feature hubs for Marvel, Star Wars, Disney and Lucasfilm (Star Wars) content on its home screen. That presentation set a very high bar for WarnerMedia, which considers DC Comics among its crown jewels.

DC UNVEILS NEW 'BIRDS OF PREY' COMIC FOR OCTOBER

THR reports that Harley Quinn isn’t just teaming up with the Birds of Prey in next year’s big-screen Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) — she’s going to be joining the comic book incarnation of the team as well, with DC unveiling a new ongoing Birds of Prey comic book series to launch this fall.

The series will feature the upcoming movie lineup of the team — Black Canary, Huntress and Harley Quinn — with Renee Montoya, Gotham City detective and occasional vigilante, along for the ride. If that combination sounds unlikely, that’s kind of the point, according to writer Brian Azzarello.

The mag will present Harley with a new life, post-Suicide Squad — the group’s series ended in January, and they haven’t been seen since — offering the opportunity for her to get mixed up in a collision between Black Canary, out to help an old flame, and her former teammate, the Huntress, who’s been sent up against a threat known as "Las Esposas de la Muerte" at the bidding of Detective Montoya.

The series will debut Oct. 30, both digitally and in comic book stores.

Frank Spotnitz will serve as showrunner and executive producer on 'Eisenhorn.'

THR reports that Warhammer 40,000, the adolescent sci-fi favorite that began life as a miniature wargame before spawning novels, video games and even a movie, is set to get its very first small-screen adaptation.

Big Light Productions, led by The Man in the High Castle creator Frank Spotnitz, has teamed with Warhammer 40,000 rights holder Games Workshop on a live-action TV series, Eisenhorn.

The series will be set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, where mankind teeters on the brink of annihilation. While humanity’s armies wage unending war across a million battlefields, in the darkness, a secret conflict rages, fought by the agents of the Imperial Inquisition. Drawing from sci-fi, fantasy and crime genres, Eisenhorn will see Inquisitor Gregor Eisenhorn and his band of investigators fight to thwart the monstrous schemes of aliens, heretics and demons before mankind’s doom is sealed.
'SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS' RENEWED FOR SEASON 13 BY NICKELODEON ON HEELS OF STRONG RATINGS FOR ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL

Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? A mega-star!

Deadline reports that Spongebob SquarePants, the #1 kids animated TV series for the past 17 years, will keep going. Nickelodeon has ordered a 13-episode 13th season of the pop culture phenom.

The renewal comes on the heels of Spongebob’s Big Birthday Blowout, a live-action and animated special, drawing 2.2 million total viewers in its simulcast Friday across Nickelodeon, TeenNick and Nicktoons. It also follows the Outstanding Short Form Animated Program Emmy nomination yesterday for SpongeBob SquarePants’ episode “Plankton Paranoia” as Nick is preparing to commemorate 20 Years of the Iconic series with a 1800 square-foot booth at Comic-Con bringing Bikini Bottom to life.

SpongeBob SquarePants season 13 will reunite original voice cast members Tom Kenny (SpongeBob SquarePants), Bill Fagerbakke (Patrick Star), Rodger Bumpass (Squidward), Clancy Brown (Mr. Krabs), Carolyn Lawrence (Sandy Cheeks) and Mr. Lawrence (Plankton), and current show runners Vince Waller and Marc Ceccarelli.
WILL 'THOR 4' INTRODUCE FAN FAVORITE HERO BETA RAY BILL?

So the God of Thunder, Thor, will be returning for a fourth entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This news comes ahead of Marvel Studios’ San Diego Comic-Con panel on Saturday where fans are expecting to get a first look at Marvel’s plans for its next phase.

Undoubtedly Thor 4, which also sees director Taika Waititi on board as writer, will continue to explore new facets of the character, while leaning on Waititi’s penchant for action-comedy and surprising emotional beats. Waititi’s return to the franchise likely means we won’t be getting the kind of grandiose high-fantasy and exploration into millennia spanning godhood explored in Jason Aaron’s current, stunning run on the comic book series. But the filmmaker has never made two films that feel entirely alike.

So what of the fan-favorite, deeply complex thunder thoroughbred created by Thor scribe Walter Simonson in the comics, Beta Ray Bill?

Bill is long due to make his debut. He was teased in Ragnarok, with a statue of his head appearing on Sakaar. Early drafts of the script included the character but he was dropped after it was decided there wasn’t enough room to do him justice. The Korbinite hero seems right up Waititi’s alley of weird. But the events of the comic that allowed Beta Ray Bill to join the Asgardians and prove his own worthiness would have to be restructured for the MCU. Simonson’s run on The Mighty Thor saw Beta Ray Bill leading the charge against Surtur, who was responsible for the death of most of his race. But with Surtur (Clancy Brown) having already brought Ragnarok about, and his use as a punchline rather than the ultimate evil, there’s arguably little threat left that could come from the villain. Like Malektih, Surtur was given little room to grow in the MCU. (via THR)

Maybe we will learn more during SDCC! Are you ready to summon the thunder?
LORE CREATOR AARON MAHNKE DELIVERS NEW CHILLS WITH 'WELLINGTON'
07/17/19 @ 3:21 pm EST
Source: IDW | Categories: IDW | Comments (0) | E-mail Article | Add a Comment
From the mind of Aaron Mahnke, creator of the award-winning Lorepodcast, comes Wellington, a five-issue comic book series delving even deeper into Lore’s dark side of history!

Written by New York Times bestselling author Delilah S. Dawson (Star Wars) with Aaron Mahnke, featuring artwork by Piotr Kowalski(The Dark Tower) and colors by Brad Simpson(The Witcher), this fear-fraught tale – debuting December 2019 – introduces the creature-hunting Duke of Wellington, investigator of the most thrilling mysteries and monsters found on the smash hit podcast!

“History and folklore are deep wells, and they are honestly a fiction writer’s dream come true,” says Mahnke. “With an amazing cast of characters just waiting to be called upon, and centuries of belief in the supernatural setting the stage, I’m excited to share these powerful stories in a brand-new way!”

“As a huge fan of the pop culture phenomenon that is Lore, I jumped at the chance to work with Aaron Mahnke and the Wellington team to merge history with dark supernatural adventures,” says Dawson. “Add in the atmospheric art by Piotr and Brad, and you're going to see the spirit of Lore resurrected in an entirely new way. This is a book you're going to want!”

“The most interesting characters in comics are those who battle with their own demons whilst trying to fix the world however they can,” says Kowalski. “The Duke of Wellington certainly has all the qualities of a perfect horror tale hero. He is driven, experienced, and tormented by nightmares. He is a hunter, avenger, and tireless seeker of the ultimate truth. And, ultimately, the strength of this character guarantees a captivating and entertaining comic book.”

“Aaron Mahnke's Lore is one of my favorite podcasts and I'm beyond thrilled to be working with him and the amazing team of Delilah Dawson, Piotr Kowalski, and Brad Simpson to add a new twist to some of the stories from the show,” says editor Chase Marotz. “Expect mystery, mayhem, and an awesome monster or two!”

For information on how to secure copies of Wellington, please contact your local comic shop or visitwww.comicshoplocator.com to find a store near you.

F. PAUL WILSON WRITING REPAIRMAN JACK GRAPHIC NOVEL!

Source: Dynamite | Categories: Dynamite | Comments (0) | E-mail Article | Add a Comment

Dynamite announces a licensing deal with F. Paul Wilson to bring his "fixer" mercenary to the graphic novel format. The best-selling and award-winning F. Paul Wilson will be the sole writer tackling this original contribution to the urban antihero's saga.

Repairman Jack first appeared in Wilson's 1984 novel The Tomb, as part of his "Adversary Cycle." Over a decade later, Repairman Jack was spun off into a dedicated series of novels and altogether has now starred in more than 20. Jack makes his living fixing problems for people in his future society, often dealing with issues contemporary to our times as well. Through these missions, Jack encounters both the mundane and otherworldly supernatural forces out of his control.

"Originally I agreed just to write new stories for the Repairman Jack graphic novels and have someone else script them, but anal me couldn't give up the reins," said writer F. Paul Wilson. "So I'm doing the whole deal, story and script. Jack's fans can expect to see a lot of familiar faces, while new readers will come away with a damn good idea of who this urban mercenary is, what he does, and how he gets it done."

Nick Barrucci, Dynamite CEO and Publisher added, "F. Paul Wilson is one of the most talented and prolific writers of his era. It's always a thrill reading a new Repairman Jack novel and we all agreed that level of action with his unique sprinkling of supernatural and sci-fi elements would translate perfectly to a visual medium. Paul is a longtime fan of comics and we can't wait to announce more!"

The first Repairman Jack original graphic novel will be solicited and released in 2020, with more details coming soon from Dynamite.
