DF Interview: The Hills are alive with the sound of screaming in ‘Happy Hill’ from   Richard Douek & Joe Mulvey

By Byron Brewer

Happy Hill is a posh resort in the Catskill Mountains of New York that promises that its guests will leave truly happy – the only problem being that many of them never leave at all. Wyatt Willows is obsessed with the place, and its connection to The Wudsman – a horned, masked figure that most people think is an urban legend, but who he knows is both real and deadly.

When a child goes missing on the grounds of Happy Hill, the investigation uncovers dark secrets hidden and an unstoppable supernatural menace aiming to make this vacation permanent!

From Comix Tribe comes Happy Hill, an all-new vacation horror thriller written by Rich Douek (Sea of Sorrows, Road of Bones) and co-writer and artist Joe Mulvey. I caught up with both creators and we chatted about the coming book.

Byron Brewer: Rich and Joe, is this your first collaboration since the wonderful days of Wailing Blade? How’s it feel?

Rich Douek: It’s great to be back working with Joe! We had a great time collaborating on Wailing Blade, so when Joe brought Happy Hill to me, I couldn’t wait to get on board.

Joe Mulvey: In short, it feels fantastic. Rich is a natural creative partner for me. His writing is phenomenal and his work ethic, creativity and enthusiasm for collaborating are all off the charts.

Byron: I’ve been looking for a getaway place since finally checking out of Hotel California. What would I find as a guest of Happy Hill resort? (laughs)

Rich: Happy Hill has everything! From a world class spa to restaurants, bars, and a private amusement park! Basically, if it will make you happy, you’ll find it there.

Joe: The second you get there, the air smells like your favorite scent. There’s everything anyone could ever want at Happy Hill to make their time there amazing. So, the rest depends on YOU and how far you’re willing to go to be happy.

Byron: So seriously, guys, tell readers about how this new book from Comix Tribe came into being and a little about it. I hear it’s been stuck in Joe’s head for awhile.

Joe: I’ve had the idea for Happy Hill knocking around in my head for the last few years, a combination between Willy Wonka and The Shining. A fantastic getaway vacation destination where you could truly leave all your troubles behind and eliminate your greatest source of unhappiness at a cost.

As an impatient artist, I immediately started drawing pages as they popped in my head but the story really went next level when Rich agreed to come on board and co-write with me.

Rich: Joe had been showing me artwork and talking about the concept for a long time, so I was pretty familiar with the story he wanted to tell. What started as him just sending me pieces he was working on to get my opinion as a friend developed to the point where Joe was really digging my feedback and ideas, and graciously decided to let me help him create this world and tell this story.

Byron: Introduce us to Wyatt Willows.

Rich: Wyatt is a man haunted by a traumatic past - he’s one of two survivors of the so-called “Roanoke Orphanage”, where, on one fateful night, all the orphans and staff disappeared – and coincidentally, that orphanage borders the very same woods that house Happy Hill. He’s convinced there’s a connection between the resort, the orphanage, and the Wudsman, a local myth in the area, but he’s never been able to actually get on the grounds until now.

Joe: Wyatt is obsessed with anything that will get him answers to his very mysterious and traumatic past. He spends a small fortune to get to Happy Hill in hopes of finding the answers the rest of the world seems unable to give him.

Byron: Who are some of the other protagonists we will discover in issue #1?

Rich: Wyatt’s not alone in his investigation – he’s joined by his lifelong friend Thea, the only other orphan to survive that night. Thea’s taken a different path in life, joining the FBI in the hope that saving others will help put her past behind her. But she’s about to learn that Happy Hill has more to do with her history than she ever imagined.

Joe: Bottom line, Thea Rippley is the badass. She and Wyatt are the only family they’ve ever known. So she’s willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done for him. That is fearless, honest, loyal to a fault and she does NOT tolerate B.S., especially from Wyatt.

Byron: Tell readers more about the “urban legend” of the Wudsman.

Joe: The Wudsman is a local legend in upstate NY, known for either saving kids or taking them depending on what stories you hear.

Rich: He’s like one of those scary campfire stories the locals tell each other, with a history going back decades – the Wudsman can supposedly grant wishes – but always at a price. If you’re not willing to pay, well, it doesn’t work out well for you. But the legend and the reality of who and what the Wudsman is are two completely different things – and unraveling those two things is a big part of the story we are telling.

Byron: Can you both talk a little about Joe’s art in this all-new vacation horror thriller?

Rich: Joe’s really taken his art to the next level here. While he’s not creating a world as fantastical and weird as he did for Wailing Blade, he’s still put all the detail and work in to make Happy Hill and its inhabitants feel real and full of life.

Joe: I can walk through Happy Hill in my mind. I know the roads (and slides, YES there are slides as a way to get around the expansive grounds!), the locations, the attractions and the areas to stay away from, because THOSE are the most fun. So, when I drew this book, I wanted to make people really enjoy their mental getaway from the first page to the last.

Byron: Joe and Rich, what projects in which you are involved can you tell readers about?

Rich: Aside from Happy Hill, I’m happy to announce I’ll be making my Marvel Comics debut in December with a Wastelanders:Star-Lord one-shot. I also have a few things planned for next year with various publishers that I can’t talk about yet, so keep your eyes open!

Joe: First off, I’m super excited for everything Rich has coming out. I think he’s one of the most talented creators in comics and seeing him getting bigger stages to show his skills on is always a thrill.

As for myself,  I’ll be retiring from comics, moving up to Happy Hill after this series wraps. Kidding, I’ve got a bunch of projects in various forms at the moment so I don’t think I can say much just yet but when I can, I’ll be shouting about them from the mountaintops.

Dynamic Forces would like to thank Richard Douek & Joe Mulvey for taking time out of their busy schedules to answer our questions. Happy Hill #1 from Comix Tribe is slated to be on sale on January 26th!
