DF Interview: Tim Seeley again takes readers to ‘Where Roads Lead’ in his new ‘Dark Red’ one-shot By Byron Brewer Following the events surrounding the defeat of the Order of the Eventide, blue-collar vampire Chip tries to return to his life of quiet, rural isolation. But soon he has to ditch his late night convenience store shift to travel across the country to New Orleans to visit a dying veteran. What starts as a trip of noble intent becomes a quest through a hell of wars to retrieve a stolen soul and escape an old enemy. Writer Tim Seeley (Brilliant Trash, The Bequest) and artist Corin Howell (Shadow Service) return to bring us the next chapter in the epic tale of horror and adventure that is Dark Red – and this one has twice the bite! I sat down with Tim Seeley to discover… where roads lead. Byron Brewer: Tim, why is now the best time for the return of this edition of Dark Red: Where Roads Lead? Tim Seeley: Sadly, a story about an embittered rural guy who struggles to maintain his American ideals and not be corrupted by fascists and con-man opportunists is always relevant these days. The character of Chip was based on my grandfather who died at the end of 2019, and I based part of this story on the experience of visiting him in the veterans home on his final day. Byron: How does it feel teaming up again with artist Corin Howell? Tim Seeley: Always a pleasure. Corin is my co-creator on this book and I'm always happy to have her. Byron: For those who may have been living under a rock (and with the last two years, who can blame them, LOL), can you summarize the last “episode” of this saga which featured, if memory serves, the defeat of the Order of the Eventide? Are there any threads from that readers definitely need to know before hopping about this one-shot? Or is it pretty new reader-friendly? Tim Seeley: Yeah, the last series had Chip fleeing Chicago after he got involved in an urban war between vampires and were-creatures. This story doesn't demand you know any of that, though. It's a standalone about vampires, demons and loss. Byron: Could you tell us about the book’s protagonists, especially the rural vampire Chip who seems to prefer isolation? Tim Seeley: Chip is an embittered rural guy who struggles to maintain his American ideals and not be corrupted by fascists and con-man opportunists. He also happens to be a vampire who was turned in World War II, who works at an all-night gas station in North Dakota. The character of Chip was based on my grandfather… except for the embittered part, which was based on, well, y'know. Byron: Any clues as to the “old enemy” pulling the story-chords in the background? Tim Seeley: Well, fans of the first five issues will be real happy. Byron: What is the overall storyline of this one-shot? Can you give readers a sort of extended elevator pitch? Tim Seeley: Chip is called to visit an old war buddy, but by the time he gets there, the guy is on his deathbed. But, there's something wrong with his old friend's soul, and Chip has to team up with a voodoo-practicing nun to rescue him from hell. Byron: What does Corin bring to this horrific table? Tim Seeley: Sexy dudes, hot ladies, and excellent storytelling. Byron: Tim, what projects in which you are involved, inside comics or outside, can you tell readers about? Tim Seeley: I've got Robins from DC, Gwenverse from Marvel, a film called Revealer, and all kinds of cool, unannounced stuff!
