DF Interview: Horror comics master Cullen Bunn unleashes a Triple Threat of Terror on Kickstarter By Byron Brewer Outer Shadows & Outland Entertainment are bringing together what they are calling a Triple Threat of Terror, a special horror-filled campaign on Kickstarter introducing three different one-shot tales of terror written by master of horror comics Cullen Bunn and illustrated by an exciting rogue’s gallery of artists. I caught up to my very prolific pal Cullen and we discussed his Terror Triple Threat book by book, with some epic info added. Here is what the scribe told me. Byron Brewer: Cullen, you are without doubt the master of horror on the comics scene, but instead of just one book you have a triple threat of terror in a trio of one-shots now up on Kickstarter. Why so many at once, and why Kickstarter? Cullen Bunn: From the beginning, I was thinking about releasing these three separate books at the same time. I thought it would feel a lot like a drive-in triple feature. That plan shifted and changed over time. At one point the plan was to run them as different campaigns. But the three books all wrapped up around the same time, and it just felt like fate was trying to tell me something. I loved the idea of offering up three different takes on horror tales at the same time. It felt quirky and weird in just the right measure. With that in mind, Kickstarter (and, of course, Outland Entertainment) just seemed like the right place to try something so peculiar and different. Byron: Let’s talk about these one-shots that make up your triple threat. What can you tell readers about the inspiration for and overall plot of The Window. Also, discuss your collaboration with artist Luay Garwan. Cullen Bunn: The Window, like some of my other work, was inspired by a time in my life when I moved into a small, strange house. The house was odd and off-putting, yes, and it was crawling with slugs and roaches, but what was really strange at the time was this sense of not knowing what the hell was going on in my life. It felt like everything was falling apart. It felt like the world around me was becoming more and more alien. Luay had reached out to me with some samples of his work, and I just felt like he would be amazing at creating strange, otherworldly monsters. Boy, was I right! Byron: What was your muse for a horror buddy road trip with Long Pig and Azrael? Talk about your protagonists and their adventure. What does artist Eman Casallos bring to this unusual table? Cullen Bunn: While I originally thought of all of these comics as inspired by the Empire Pictures and Full Moon movies I enjoyed as a kid, Long Pig and Azrael is probably the easiest for me to identify, inspiration-wise. There’s a great Empire movie called TerrorVision. In that movie, this creature, called the Hungry Beast, terrorizes a family. Azrael in this story is most certainly inspired by the Hungry Beast. In addition, the story was inspired by my dad. He was a door-to-door salesman, traveling all the time. I often travelled with him. And he loved picking up hitchhikers, which often terrified me. I thought Eman would do a great drop with the look of the desolate, lonely highway. I thought he would bring the feel of a long road trip to life. And I knew he would draw one Hell (pun intended) of a hungry demon. Byron: Anyone who has read Bunn books like I have knows there is usually a callback of some type in their titles, and Death Duel with the Chainsaw Witches sounds like a doozy, as Hazel used to say. (Not Bugs Bunny nemesis Witch Hazel but 1960s TV housekeeper Hazel!) What can you tell us about this magical mystery tour of a comic? Talk about your collaboration with artist Diogo Carvalho. Cullen Bunn: Death Duel with the Chainsaw Witches is inspired by rock-n-roll horror flicks like Black Roses and Trick or Treat. It is also the story (of these three) that I’ve had in my head the longest. There’s a mysterious devil-fueled album called Overdark in this comic that I’ve had in mind for thirty-five years or more. I knew Diogo would draw an amazing, gritty version of a heavy metal concert. It looks like art that should be painted on the side of a van. For this one, by the way, my wife Cindy helped with the name of the band and some of the lyrics! This one’s also fun because the band A Sound of Thunder recorded a track inspired by the comic. They’ve even shot a music video! Byron: How cool is that?!… What can you tell readers about the Kickstarter? Cullen Bunn: The Kickstarter can be found at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/cullenbunn/cullen-bunns-triple-threat-of-terror?ref=5u6o2k … and it is running until November 28. We’ve got some exciting reward tiers, including hand “bloodied” editions if you want something really unique. We have digital and print editions available. Byron: Cullen, what other ghosties and ghoulies and bumps in the night do you have headed our way soon… that you can tell us about, of course! Cullen Bunn: Oh, I have so, so many projects in the works for you. Just released is The Hexiles from Mad Cave, which is about a dysfunctional family with demonic powers. And Dark Horse just announced Jumpscare, which I promise will be your new favorite horror hero! Dynamic Forces would like to thank Cullen Bunn for taking time out of his busy schedule to answer our questions. The one-shots that are Cullen Bunn’s Triple Threat of Terror from Outer Shadows & Outland Entertainment are expected to be delivered in December.
