DF Interview: Iolanda Zanfardino takes readers on a chaotic LGBTQ+ road trip in ‘A Thing Called Truth’

By Byron Brewer

A workaholic scientist who wants to save the world and a woman who fears nothing but discovering her own destiny find themselves mixed up in a chaotic, on-the-road adventure through Europe. Will they manage to find a middle ground between their opposing ways of life – at least long enough to complete their mission? And could this trip lead to an unexpected romance?

From Image Comics comes A Thing Called Truth by writer Iolanda Zanfardino and artist Elisa Romboli. This book caught my eye from the start, so it was my pleasure to get in touch with the scribe and spend some time on the internet with Iolanda Zanfardino.

Byron Brewer: Iolanda, your coming book, A Thing Called Truth, is done in the spirit of those stories I love but are seldom presented today: a romp through a vast area (in this case, Europe) in search of or running from something, with strong character development along the way. What was the inspiration for this book? How did the idea first come about?

Iolanda Zanfardino: Actually the first idea was exactly "a romp through a vast area in search of or running from something"! (Laughs) Elisa and I love road trips and the sense of freedom they give you, so we dreamed of talking [in the book] about discovering new worlds and new landscapes along the way, perhaps leading the characters to a whole new them!

Byron: Can you introduce us to your main two protagonists: a workaholic scientist and a woman who like many fears her destiny? Help us get to know them a little here before we begin the grand adventure of the book please.

Iolanda Zanfardino: I created Mag and Dorian as two opposite characters in search of a middle ground between their ways of life. Mag has devoted every waking minute of her adult life to her career and her noble goal, while Dorian, who has always lived day by day juggling various humble jobs, is now firmly determined to enjoy every moment with no regrets or fears.

Byron: When readers pick up A Thing Called Truth, tell a bit about what they should expect in this five-issue limited series.

Iolanda Zanfardino: I'd say they should expect adventures through great and wonderful cities, characters that will fight to exit their comfort zones and to find some courage, big plans and difficult missions!

Byron: Not to have any spoilers, but who or what are the forces (the big-bads?) opposing our heroes?

Iolanda Zanfardino: I think number one would be big corporations' greed, those who prefer to raise their profit margins instead of helping other people. I would also say, trying to avoid spoilers, the fragility of the human condition.

Byron: Wow.  …Talk about the wonderful art of Elisa Romboli.

Iolanda Zanfardino: I am really so grateful for Elisa's art for the stories I write! We started working as a team almost as a joke when we found ourselves working at home side by side, but now I'm sure nobody else could bring to life so perfectly what I have in my mind. Her pages are so dynamic and appealing, her characters are vivid and with extremely communicative facial expressions. (Plus she's very patient with my perfectionism!)

Byron: Iolanda, are there any other projects now out or coming soon in which you are involved that you can tell readers about?¨

Iolanda Zanfardino: Sure! Elisa and I also created Alice in Leatherland with Black Mask Studios: a proudly queer, body and sex positive romantic comedy! The trade paperback with all five issues will be out this November!¨ The same month, also from Black Mask Studios, will be published Hecate's Will: a 5-issue miniseries with story and art by me! It's an outsider art adventure about a diverse found family and never giving up on your dreams.

Dynamic Forces would like to thank Iolanda Zanfardino for taking time out of her busy schedule to answer our questions. A Thing Called Truth #1 from Image Comics is slated to be on sale November 3rd!
