DF Interview: Mark Waid takes Champions out on their own, replenishes ranks of Avengers in two new Marvel NOW series

By Byron Brewer

Spinning out of the devastation of Civil War II come the All-New, All-Different Champions. Sporting a classic name, they look to the future like no super team ever before, concerned with healing the deep rifts in the Marvel Universe and repairing the reputation of the superhero concept.

Meanwhile, the Avengers – whose ranks have been depleted with the defections of Ms. Marvel, Spider-Man and Nova – seek to rise, as they have ever done, like a phoenix from the ashes of the Civil War, just as one of their oldest foes returns with a vengeance!

And it’s all in the capable hands of Mark Waid in two new Marvel NOW series, Champions and Avengers. (duh) Thus, DF sought out the scribe to tell us who’s championing and who’s assembling!

Dynamic Forces: Mark, how did the decision come down to spin off the young “All New, All Different” Avengers into what is being called by the publisher the flagship of Marvel NOW? And can you talk a little bit about the “kids can make a difference too” theme of Champions?

Mark Waid: The split was Marvel’s idea, creating a real sense of change after the events of Civil War II, and I was all for it. Once we had Humberto [Ramos] on board, editor Tom Brevoort and I began talking about the book non-stop. I want to remember that the “change the world” aspect was Tom’s idea, and I was all about it -- it makes the team distinct in the Marvel Universe if it’s tackling problems that aren’t about super-villains as much as they are about social injustices.

DF: The AN AD Avengers, especially in the arc of their trip to find Nova’s father, seemed like they were just beginning to gel. And certainly their relating to one another was really strong. How will the advent of the coming of the Champions affect the kids, and more importantly the veterans as they begin their own new title?

Mark Waid: As the veterans begin their own new title, the kids are definitely missed, and there’s some recruiting necessary. And, of course, somewhere in that first year, we’ll have an inevitable Champions/Avengers face-off!

DF: It was noticeable that the young Scott Summers was not among those first forming the new team in Champions #1, but he comes into the mag in #2. Can you tell us the reasoning behind this and, as the team’s only mutant, will we see any play-out of the “Inhumans vs. X-Men” event in these pages? (Oh, and Ms. Marvel is an Inhuman, is she not?)

Mark Waid: Ms. Marvel is an Inhuman, yes, but we’re not focusing too much on the mutant/Inhuman divide. Honestly? The reason Cyke was left out of the team in issue #1 was because I ran out of pages!

DF: How much of the burden of his “future”/modern day self does young Scott carry, and will that be addressed here? Will we be seeing Jean also?

Mark Waid: No plans for Jean, but the burden of what his “future”/modern-day incarnation did will be on the minds of everyone, not just Cyclops. In fact, there are several Champions who aren’t 100% happy with him being a member, given what they believe he’s capable of. [Note: After this interview was conducted came word from Marvel of a first-ever Jean Grey series coming with the relaunch of X-Men books called ResurrXion.]

DF: The happy Cho-Hulk, I can understand, but I thought Viv Vision was an odd choice for the Champions. How did she get into the mix?

Mark Waid: I love the Vision book. Plus, any chance to add non-white non-males to a team makes me happy.

DF: Fanboy question: As a bonafide (yes, I’m admitting it) fan of the original Champions book, and since we have seen Ghost Rider, Black Widow, etc. on variant covers as Champions launched, will any of the characters be making it back for a guest shot into the new “flagship”? (Since Hercules was a Champion and is returning to Avengers, wouldn’t he be a natural?)

Mark Waid: There are no plans, but I was a fan too. Still, too much hinges on what’s happening with the other characters besides Hercules to be a good fit right now. Still, down the line...?

DF: So … Iron Man: No Shellhead (Doom, Riri or otherwise) has been named as an Avenger in any copy I’ve seen, but there IS that cover that appears to depict Iron Doom. Any comments?

Mark Waid: Oh, yeah. That’s the Infamous Iron Man, Victor von Doom. He thinks he runs the team the moment he shows up in issue #7. He may not be wrong.

DF: Son of “So … Iron Man”: It has been announced the new Avengers team will be relocating into part of the Baxter Building, which itself should make for great fun! I take it Peter Parker will be taking over part of the Tony Stark funding role, and will Jarvis be coming on board as well?

Mark Waid: Jarvis will absolutely be there -- you can’t have an Avengers book without Jarvis -- but part of the fun of that will be giving Jarvis his own arch-nemesis! More than that, I cannot say.

DF: Mark, anything else you can tell us about the new Avengers team, with the additions of Hercules, the new young Wasp, the Amazing Spider-Man and “Iron Man”?

Mark Waid: Only that Mike Del Mundo knocks it out of the park every issue with stunning, stunning artwork!

Dynamic Forces would like to thank Mark Waid for taking time out of his busy schedule to answer our questions. Avengers #1 and Champions #2 hit stores Nov. 2nd!
