DF Interview: Troy Brownfield brings haunts to Halloween in a Grimm Fairy Tales special By Byron Brewer Sela Mathers is asked to be a guest speaker at a small college, but what she doesn't realize is that the 3 Little Pigs from her past have some very big horrors in store for her! The 3 Little Pigs return, and this time, they've summoned an evil that may be too powerful for anyone to contain. Could this be the end for the Professor? Writer Troy Brownfield sat down with Dynamic Forces to answer that question and more. Dynamic Forces: Troy, tell us how this special Halloween treat from Zenescope Entertainment came about for you. Troy Brownfield: The Halloween issue is a long-standing tradition at Zenescope. Frankly, I've always wanted to do one based on my general horror background and my love of Halloween in particular. Ralph Tedesco (the Big Z's Editor-in-Chief and co-founder) indicated that he and Joe Brusha (the other co-founder and big bossman) had a possible idea for the issue and asked me about my take on it. I shared with them the direction in which I might take that story, and fortunately they gave me the chance to do it. DF: For those unfamiliar, can you explain the Grimm Fairy Tales Universe to us? TB: The GFT Universe is rooted in a dark fantasy/horror take on some of your favorite childhood dreamworlds. At the center is Earth (aka the Nexus), and the other realms include Wonderland, Oz, Neverland and Myst. The main character of the special is Sela Mathers, a former guardian of the Nexus who still does quite a bit of guarding while guiding the next generation of young highborns (descendants/interpretations of legendary figures with fantastic abilities) in the main GFT title. DF: So what will be happening in the Special? TB: Sela gets an invite to speak on her academic field of expertise (fairy tales, myths and legends) at a small midwestern college. As she heads there for the Halloween appointment, a storm blows up and all hell breaks loose. Possibly literally. It's a dark-and-stormy night, Ten-Little-Indians, the-killer-is-among-us, William-Golding-referencing love letter to Halloween and horror films. DF: Sela Mathers has history with the 3 Little Pigs, all big bads. Can you fill us in? TB: The 3 Little Pigs were once completely human. They were incredible bastards and Sela (at the time under the influence of Belinda, who's the darker Rose Red to Sela's Snow White) meted out rough punishment on them. They've been wanting their shot at her ever since. DF: Do we know what artist will be working with you as yet? TB: The art is by Mario del Pennino and the color is by JorGe Cortes. They are most excellent. I've been watching the pages come back, and they've done a great job. Sometimes the tone of these kind of stories can be hard to strike, but they've hit a good balance. Mario has a great, smooth line, and Cortes has a solid sense of lighting a scene. It's nice stuff. DF: Those covers for the issue by Pasquale Qualano, Meguro, Jason Cardy and Maria Sanapo look awesome as well. TB: They really nailed it. Cardy's is more evocative of the overall GFT feel, and it's very cool. The others are film poster references, with Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Qualano), Silence of the Lambs (Meguro) and The Evil Dead (Sanapo). They're all great; the Meguro "Lambs" cover has gotten a lot of attention on my Facebook. Dynamic Forces would like to thank Troy Brownfield for taking time out of his busy schedule to answer our questions. Grimm Fairy Tales Presents: 2015 Halloween Special hits stores September 30th!
