DF Interview: Chip Zdarsky’s Howard the Duck relaunches (again!) to quack us up
By Byron Brewer
You’ve read it. There is only Secret Wars. There is only Battleworld. For an alien trapped in a world he never made – and now THIS! – you cannot help but be confused when Marvel relaunches Howard the Duck only months after his … well, his relaunch.
No fowls, though. It all fits in with the wonderfully unique creation Steve Gerber gave us back in the day. And to fill us in on his approach for Howard in this “all-new, all-different” universe, HTD writer Chip Zdarsky sat down with Dynamic Forces to tell his tail … er uh, tale.
Dynamic Forces: Chip, first off, congratulations on the wonderful job that you were doing with Howard before the big boom of Battleworld hit. He is a difficult character to do.
Chip Zdarsky: Thanks! I was suuuuuuper stressed out about it going in, but the reaction's been pretty great so far! Howard's pretty tricky to write and I think anyone who tackles the character has to find the right balance between staying true to Steve Gerber's original run's spirit and adding new things to it so you're not just poorly copying what's come before.
DF: Post-Secret Wars, are we going to be following the adventures of the 616 Howard we have known since the Gerber days?
Chip Zdarsky: I'm pretty much in the dark as to whether or not we're on Earth-616 after Secret Wars. Maybe it's called Earth-Chip now? But I'm writing the character as if it's issue #6 of the previous series, even though we're an ALL-NEW NUMBER ONE!
DF: Will Howard still be operating as a detective --a duck dick -- or will this new #1 bring a new set-up for our feisty fowl?
Chip Zdarsky: Here's my greatest not-so-secret: I'm a sh*tty writer. So, that means I've strayed a bunch from the original P.I. idea and setting a lot of the second arc in space. Good job, Chip! Way to honor your own premise!
DF: Can you let us know anything about the initial storyline coming up? Non-spoilery, of course.
Chip Zdarsky: It's about Howard finally having it with this planet! It also brings in some new characters and cosmic shenanigans.
DF: Is there a return planned for any of Howard's classic rogues gallery?
Chip Zdarsky: No, not really. Again, in keeping with the spirit of Gerber's run, which is marked by ludicrous creativity, I'm trying to add new characters where I can.
DF: How do you feel about the landscape of the new Marvel Universe, Post-Secret Wars, going forward?
Chip Zdarsky: It's exciting! I think! I don't know, no one tells me anything. What have you heard??
Dynamic Forces would like to thank Chip Zdarsky for taking time out of his busy schedule to answer our questions. Howard the Duck #1 from the all-new, all-different Marvel Comics hits stores in November!
