DF Interview: Ron Marz is creating a cosmic saga in a brand new comics universe in ‘Resolution’, now on Zoop crowdfunder

By Byron Brewer

Resolution is the tale of Xaan Maddox, a legendary member of the outer space corps of heroes known as The Resolute. Now retired, Xaan Maddox has withdrawn to a remote world in solitude. Having quit The Resolute to live out her retirement on a remote world, she tends floating gravity seas, harvesting fish to scratch out a living. It’s the simple, solitary life she wants.

But former comrades arrive and attempt to recruit her to again don the exo-suit, so they can bring to justice an alien warlord who is Xaan’s former arch-nemesis. What follows forces Xaan to confront her own past, and places the entire universe in deadly peril.

Ron Marz, Andy Lanning, and Rick Leonardi have produced epic stories spanning the Marvel and DC universes, and even a galaxy far, far away. Now they’re joining forces to create their own cosmic playground with Resolution. And, wanting to find out about the book-to-be and its ongoing crowdfunder campaign, I talked with my friend, Ron Marz.

Byron Brewer: Ron, it’s interesting to see not one but three masters of cosmic comics [Marz with Andy Lanning and Rick Leonardi] storytelling together (for the first time?) and not on a Big 2 book but a creator-owned! Tell readers how and why this came about, the creation of Resolution.

Ron Marz: Jordan Plosky from Zoop reached out to me a while ago, and told me what they were planning with the launch of Zoop. We’ve known each other for a few years, so I was intrigued, especially with Zoop being a comics-centric platform. So I reached out to Andy and we came up with the concept, and then brought Rick into the mix. It’s like a lot of comics projects, you ultimately end up working with your friends.

BB: Why the crowdfunding route, and why Zoop?

Ron Marz: Certainly one of the factors in crowdfunding is that it allows the creators to retain 100% of the ownership of the material. Zoop takes no stake, which is an incentive. The other attraction to Zoop is that they handle a lot of the heavy lifting of the campaign, the construction of the campaign page, the promotion, the updates, and they act as a broker for printing and fulfillment. It allows the creators to do what they do best, which is to create the material, and not devote such a huge amount of time to the other tasks that go with a crowdfunding campaign.

BB: What can you tell us about the world you, Andy and Rick are creating here. Regular comics readers have seen you gentlemen create or embellish so many comics worlds, tell us what you can about this one(s).

Ron Marz: Andy and I wanted to lean into the cosmic end of respective experience, since that’s a good chunk of what we’re known for as writers, with Green Lantern and Silver Surfer for me, and Guardians of the Galaxy, Nova, and Legion of Super-Heroes for Andy. Resolution is the result. We’ve created what’s essentially a new cosmic playground, a new universe that is protected by an elite corps of heroes graced with powerful gifts. These heroes are called The Resolute. Our elevator pitch for the series is Unforgiven meets the Green Lantern Corps.

BB: Who is Xaan Maddox? Introduce her as a character and tell what she was, and what her predicament and challenge are as we read Resolution.

Ron Marz: Xaan Maddox was once one of the greatest heroes of The Resolute, with a storied career and a legendary rivalry with her arch-nemesis, the warlord Tau the Desolation. But that was years ago. Now she lives on a remote world, living out her life as a recluse. But people from Xaan’s past seek her out to tell her that a weakened Tau the Desolation has been located, and there’s a vast bounty on his head. What Xaan decides to do will dictate the fate of the known universe.

BB: Tell us about The Resolute. Who are they and what is their purpose? Can you introduce us to some of the members who may have key roles in this hard cover graphic novel?

Ron Marz: The Resolute are an elite force keeping peace in the universe, presided over by mysterious aliens called The Hilt. Members of The Resolute, called Blades, are graced with the ability to channel and control the universe’s dark energy. The Blades are drawn from myriad worlds, and genetically inclined and then technologically enhanced to access this dark energy. The Blades protect the universe, but the personal cost to them is high.

BB: What can you tell readers about the main storyline for the book?

Ron Marz: There’s an element of “veteran hero pulled back into duty one last time” to the story, but there’s more going on than that. We’re also touching on the sacrifices demanded of heroes, and the costs of action versus inaction. The story is told in two timelines, because in addition to the present, where Xaan is retired, we’re presenting flashbacks to the glory days of her career.

BB: The creators of Resolution have known several roles in comics storytelling. What can you tell us about the collaboration here? Who’s doing what? And (working on assumption) add anything you may want to about the jaw-dropping art of Rick Leonardi.

Ron Marz: Andy and I are co-writing, which we’ve done a fair amount of, including the recent Justice League: Endless Winter crossover for DC. Rick Leonardi is penciling and Andy is inking. I guess we’re sort of a three-headed monster in that sense. Andy has inked Rick before, and it’s a really lovely combination. Rick is unlike any other artist in comics, and getting the right inker over his pencils makes a big difference. Rick is just so good, both for his pure drawing ability, but also the grace and cleverness of his storytelling. I’m blessed to have worked with Rick for quite a while now on a series of projects. Andrew Dalhouse is joining us on colors, though our pal Neeraj Menon actually colored the cover.

BB: Ron, tell eager fans how to get involved and what is being offered as your running campaign continues on Zoop.

Ron Marz: The campaign on Zoop can be found here: https://zoop.gg/c/resolution

Resolution is going to be an oversize, hardcover graphic novel. We’re also doing a comic-size Companion that will offer a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the project coming together, including the script, Rick’s layouts and pencils, Andy’s inks, Andrew’s color work, and a bunch of other extras. There’s also a portfolio offered, which contains pin-up images by a bunch of our artist friends: Greg Broadmore, Wes Craig, Bryan Hitch, Phil Jimenez, Jeff Johnson, Peter Krause, Ron Lim, Paul Pelletier, Darick Roberston, Luke Ross, Bart Sears, and Liam Sharpe. The campaign also offers sketches by Andy and Rick respectively, as well as original art from the book itself, including the cover.

Dynamic Forces would like to thank Ron Marz for taking time out of his busy schedule to answer our questions. Keep your eyes on DF News for more on Resolution, now on Zoop crowdfunder!
