DF Interview: Marguerite Bennett conjures a reimagining of hit supernatural thriller series ‘Witchblade’

By Byron Brewer

New York City Police Detective Sara Pezzini's life was forever fractured by her father's murder. Cold, cunning and hellbent on revenge, Sara now stalks a vicious criminal cabal beneath the city, where an ancient power collides and transforms her into something wild, magnificent and beyond her darkest imaginings. How will Sara use this ancient power, or will she be consumed by it?

From Top Cow and Image Comics comes a reimagining of the supernatural series Witchblade! Written by New York Times Best-Selling Marguerite Bennett (Animosity, Batwoman, DC Bombshells) with art from Giuseppe Cafaro (Suicide Squad, Power Rangers, Red Sonja) – hand in hand with original co-creator Marc Silvestri – this new iteration reintroduces the series with a reimagined origin and contemporary takes on familiar characters.

I discussed the coming comic with scribe Marguerite Bennett.

Byron Brewer: Marguerite, why is now a good time for Top Cow to introduce a reimagined iteration of Witchblade to comic book readers? Were you a fan of the original comic?

Marguerite Bennett: I was a huge fan of the original comic, inasmuch as I was allowed to be – as a child, I got the castoff issues from older (male) friends, and had to guess at what had happened between issues, say #2 and #7. But frankly, that taught me a lot about storytelling in someone else’s world, and helped me form strong attachments to the original characters. I’ve known some of these characters longer than I’ve known most of my flesh-and-blood friends, and I’m dedicated to doing all of them justice.

To that point, this is a brilliant time to throw open the doors and invite new readers in. Witchblade has 30 years of history and for good reason. This is the first time in all those decades we’re stopping the roller coaster and inviting more folks to get on.

Byron: I understand you are working on the new book with original co-creator Marc Silvestri, CEO of Top Cow and one of the founders of parent Image Comics. How has the guidance of this comics veteran assisted with the reimagining of the book from the origin up?

Marguerite Bennett: Marc is my FAVORITE. He is a consummate gentleman and that is the highest honor I can bestow. He has been the soul of courtesy, encouragement, patience and insight from the first day. I am forever grateful for his faith in me and his guidance throughout the saga.

Byron: How would you describe the contemporary takes to be found with some of these familiar characters?

Marguerite Bennett: The world is much more aware of its troubles than it was when the story first began. Through technology, there is an interconnectedness to us now that one would think would make us more empathetic, but instead often hardens us—we are overwhelmed by how much of the world is suffering.

Byron: What can you tell readers about the returning title’s first arc?

Marguerite Bennett: This is angry, sexy, feminist Witchblade. This is rage and violence and agency and sensuality and loneliness and longing, pouring blood and pouring rain in a New York City that has lost its way as much as Sara Pezzini has.

Byron: Talk about the amazing art of Giuseppe Cafaro and what its energy will bring to the title.

Marguerite Bennett: Giuseppe is a DELIGHT. I bless the day Marc and Giuseppe met! I bless the hour! I have never worked with an artist so passionate and dynamic for the action as much as the drama – he puts his heart on every page and holds nothing back. The action is like a whipcrack across the panel, the chemistry between characters absolutely crackles. I could not have dreamed of working with someone more perfect.

Byron: Marguerite, what other current projects in which you are involved, inside or outside comics, can you tell readers about?

Marguerite Bennett: We just launched Ark: The Animated Series, a TV show I was lead writer on. Beyond that, there will be more news incoming – both comics and television – throughout the rest of 2024 and also 2025. I been busy, haha!

Dynamic Forces would like to thank Marguerite Bennett for taking time out of her busy schedule to answer our questions. Witchblade #1 from Top Cow & Image Comics is slated to be on sale July 17!
