DF Interview: Marc Guggenheim brings ‘Spider-Man & Wolverine’ together again as thwips and snikts fill the panels

By Byron Brewer

THWIKT!

Did you hear that? That sound can only mean one thing: two of your favorite Marvel heroes doing what they do best! With great power, there must come... the best there is! Spider-Man and Wolverine team up for the biggest adventure in Marvel Comics! Who or what is targeting this unlikely duo, and what can they do to stop it? Get ready for a nonstop thrill ride of big villains, bigger threats and even bigger surprises as Logan and Peter Parker team up against the machinations of a plot too big for just one hero.

From the House of Ideas comes Spider-Man & Wolverine (what did you THINK Marvel would call it??) from writer Marc Guggenheim and artist Kaare Andrews! I see Spidey, I see Logan: I’m there. Here is what scribe and all-around good guy Marc Guggenheim told me.

Byron Brewer: Marc, why is now the time for you to return to the egg (as they used to say in Howard the Duck) and write some more great adventures featuring the team of Spider-Man and Wolverine?

Marc Guggenheim: Hah! I love the way you phrased this. The truthful answer, however, is rather boring. Simply put, because Marvel asked. Specifically, editor Mark Basso reached out and asked if I’d be interested in coming up with a take for a Spider-Man and Wolverine team-up book. It was one of those “bakeoff” situations. I’d so enjoyed working with Mark on X-Men: Days of Future Past -- Doomsday that I literally jumped at the chance.

Byron: I understand this is an ongoing?

Marc Guggenheim: It is! Crazy, right?

Byron: Back in the first days of Marvel Team-Up, one of my favorite Marvel titles of all time since you NEVER saw loner Spidey with ANYONE, it was quite the draw to see him in action with a hero he never would otherwise have met. And for a while, in that beginning, it was the Spidey and Human Torch show. Will there be other heroes in and out with Peter and Logan, reminiscent of MTU?

Marc Guggenheim: I’m also a huge MTU fan. Some of my favorite Spidey stories can be found in that series. However, the current plan doesn’t call for any other heroes appearing, at least not in the early going. I want to keep the focus on Peter and Logan and their dynamic.

Byron: Tell readers your take on these two popular Marvel heroes. Who are Spider-Man and Wolverine to you, and how has that vision of the heroes changed since the time you first wrote about each?

Marc Guggenheim: First off, they’re such fundamentally different characters. They operate according to very different moral codes. Obviously, Logan is a cold blooded killer when need be and Peter is very much not. Peter is driven by guilt and responsibility while Logan’s personal compass is honor. Everything in this series started with asking: How are Peter and Logan different and which story will best draw out those differences?

One of the things that most drew me to this project is the fact that I wrote Peter and Logan very early on in my comic book career. I’ve evolved and improved as a writer a lot since then. When I first wrote Peter and Logan, I approached the stories from more of a plot perspective. This time, I’m building out from character first. My early work with Spider-Man and Wolverine was very much tied to the moments in time I was writing them. But with this series, we’re aiming for more of an “evergreen” feel. At least, that’s the hope.

Byron: What is the Janus Directory and how is it connected to our two heroes?

Marc Guggenheim: The Janus Directory is, essentially, the MacGuffin that draws Spidey and Wolverine together and kicks off the story. It’s a directory of all the undercover operatives, past and present, in the world. I wanted something that would be of importance to both Peter and Logan and they each have their own reasons to keep the Directory from falling into the wrong hands.

Byron: Is there any clue whatsoever, non-spoiler of course, that you can tell us about any villain that just may be pulling some strings behind the scenes? (No “Buy the book” responses please, LOL!)

Marc Guggenheim: Hah! There is, in fact, a villain who is, as you say, “pulling the strings.” The identity of this person is certainly a mystery that runs through the series’ early issues. There’s not much I can say without spoiling stuff, but I will remark that this person has put together a very formidable roster of Peter and Logan’s respective antagonists and they’ll be making life very difficult for our heroes.

Byron: Any continuing characters in this book? If so, can you shine the spotlight on a few here?

Marc Guggenheim: This may seem like a digression, but my friend Joe Kelly wrote a great Spidey series called Non-Stop Spider-Man, which was just what it sounded like: The action and pace were unrelenting, and you never stopped to take a breath. That’s very much the case with Spider-Man & Wolverine. All of which is to say that there really aren’t many opportunities for a cast of continuing supporting characters.

Byron: Talk about the adamantium-ly awesome art of Kaare Andrews. Kaare has said 1980s and ‘90s comics were a big influence on his art. Will we see from you some of that House of Ideas era reflected in Spider-Man & Wolverine?

Marc Guggenheim: First, I love working with Kaare and he’s just blowing the doors off of each and every issue. You can really tell that he’s putting his back into every page. There’s so much dynamism and action in even the few “quiet” scenes we have. And, yes, there’s certainly an ‘80s/’90s vibe to them. I liken it to recent movies like Black Bag or A Working Man -- action thrillers which used to be made on the regular back in the ‘90s but which you hardly see anymore these days. But when you do see them, they give you that ‘90s feel even though they’re written, directed and acted with a 21st Century sensibility.

Byron: Marc, what other projects can you tell readers about that you might have coming, inside OR outside comics?

Marc Guggenheim: Oooo. I’ve been keeping pretty busy lately. On the comic book side, I’m also writing another ongoing for Marvel, Star Wars: Jedi Knights. In addition to that, I just delivered the script for the last issue of Bring On The Bad Guys, a mini-event that I’ve been supervising for Marvel. Finally, we just announced that my next creator-owned book -- The Adventures of Ulysses Monarch -- that I’m doing with Harvey Tolibao will be published through Comixology.

Outside of comics, I’m still pushing boulders uphill over in Hollywood. I’m writing two pilots, three movies, and I’m showrunning a new animated series for Netflix. None of these projects have been officially announced, however, so I have to remain coy about them.

Dynamic Forces would like to thank Marc Guggenheim for taking time out of his busy schedule to answer our questions. Spider-Man & Wolverine #1 from Marvel Comics is slated to be on sale May 21!
