DF Interview: Corinna Bechko brings the ‘bite’ to new Aliens/Vampirella crossover

By Byron Brewer

On the handful of occasions I have interviewed talented writer Corinna Bechko, the subject has usually leaned more towards those “damn dirty apes” and not aliens or vampires. But the times, they are a’changin’.

These days, Bechko and artist Javier Garcia-Miranda are overseeing the latest Dynamite Entertainment/Dark Horse Comics crossover event, Aliens/Vampirella, as announced this morning at C2E2.

Dynamic Forces just HAD to find out about this one, so we caught up with the scribe and here is what she told us.

Dynamic Forces: First off, Corinna, how does it feel to be working with Dynamite Entertainment for the first time on this very intriguing crossover with Dark Horse Comics?

Corinna Bechko: Dynamite always gets interesting creators to work on their books, so I’m really happy to be included among their number now. And of course it’s great to work with the folks at Dark Horse again.

DF: How did this particular project come about for you?

Corinna Bechko: I was approached by Dynamite editor Joseph Rybandt and asked if I had any ideas for this crossover. I am a fan of the Aliens franchise, so of course I did! I ran several by both him and Randy Stradley (who was my editor back when I was working on Star Wars: Legacy II) on the Dark Horse side and we settled on this one, which happened to be my favorite.

DF: Will my old pal and your frequent podna-in-comics-crime Gabriel Hardman be involved in this crossover at all?

Corinna Bechko: Yes! He’s doing the covers.

DF: Before we discuss storyline, tell us your personal perceptions of our protagonists: the iconic and vampiric monster hunter, Vampirella, and the characters of groundbreaking franchise Aliens.

Corinna Bechko: The first time I saw Alien it was via a crummy VHS copy on an old TV. I was very young, it scared me to death, and I have loved it ever since. For my money, there is almost no monster more terrifying. As for Vampirella, she strikes me as smart, capable and always in control. But of course there is no controlling a Xenomorph.

DF: Corinna, tell us about the storyline that brings these two dynamic forces (lol) together.

Corinna Bechko: Haha! Well, I don’t want to spoil too much, but I’ll say that this is a story set in the near future, on a Martian base that’s just encountered a problem that only Vampirella can handle. So from the start there’s a dichotomy between Vampirella and her human counterparts. Of course, it isn’t long before everyone has something more to worry about than a vampire in their midst.

DF: In your opinion, who is more at danger here in personal combat: the monster or the monster hunter?

Corinna Bechko: Definitely the monster hunter. Those aliens are tough to beat.

DF: What does artist Javier Garcia-Miranda bring to the table?

Corinna Bechko: I couldn’t be happier to work with Javier. I’ve already seen some of the pages from the first issue and the energy he brings to the book is fantastic. It’s been a real pleasure to collaborate with him.

DF: Is there any particular inspiration that led you to pen this unique publisher crossover?

Corinna Bechko: Who could resist a project like this? The contrast between Vampirella and what she finds herself up against is interesting and fun to play with. Some would call Vampirella a type of monster, but her goals and motivations are understandable. But something like a Xenomorph is a black box. What they want, beyond survival and reproduction, is unknowable. And that makes them truly frightening.

Dynamic Forces would like to thank Corinna Bechko for taking time out of her busy schedule to answer our questions. Aliens/Vampirella #1 from Dark Horse Comics and Dynamite Entertainment hits stores this fall!
