DF Interview: Caroline Leigh Layne brings her art to the sexy sci-fi world of ‘Money Shot’

By Byron Brewer

Co-written by Tim Seeley and Sarah Beattie, the comic book Money Shot is sexy sci-fi comedy set in a near-future where space travel is ludicrously expensive and largely ignored. Enter Christine Ocampos, inventor of the Star Shot teleportation device with a big idea: She'll travel to new worlds, engage —intimately—with local aliens, and film her exploits for a jaded Earth populace trying to find something new on the internet. Now, Chris and her merry band of scientists-slash-pornstars explore the universe, each other, and the complexities of sex in a story about scientists having sex with aliens for the glory of mankind—and money.

Coming in issue #11, Chris seeks a replacement for a founding member on the outs and finds it in Dr. Yazaman Blanco, whose research might literally save the Earth, and whose hotness might melt the ice caps. But when a mission to a ruined planet goes south, does Chris have what it takes to get the money shot?

Also coming in Money Shot #11 is new artist Caroline Leigh Layne. At this important juncture in the history of Money Shot, DF chatted with the incoming artist about her take on the Oni Press mag and about herself.

Dynamic Forces: Caroline, tell us how a Texas-based artist comes to be the new illustrator of Vault Comics’ “sexy sci-fi comedy”, Money Shot?

Caroline Leigh Layne: It was after one of my Mimosa Memoir comics went viral on twitter, Tim Seeley and Adrian Wassel with Vault Comics started following my account. I was familiar with Vault Comics at the time, but this spurred my interest and I began reading more and more of their stuff. Money Shot was instantly my favorite! (Although, I do love Finger Guns and am excited for Witchblood!). We started a dialogue over twitter and, after a few weeks, they mentioned the opportunity to me and of course I accepted!

DF: Let’s rewind a little. Tell readers about your love of art, and comic book art.

Caroline Leigh Layne: Growing up, I loved anime and manga and got into American comics when I was in my pre-teen years. I’ve been drawing comics since I was young and always dreamed of being a comic book artist one day. When I was in junior high and high school, I was constantly working on different art projects during my free time. Whether I was painting abstract scenery or creating zines, I have always needed a creative outlet.

This led me to study painting and printmaking in college which grew my passion for art and really helped me further develop my talent. After undergrad, I attended Savannah College of Art and Design where I received my Masters in Sequential Art. The aspect I admire the most about comics is the way you use art to tell the story. I love the importance of drawing the perfect expression to illustrate what the character is feeling and how that visual moves the narrative forward.

DF: Was your Webtoons creation Mimosa Memoirs your first foray into sequential art? I know that Money Shot co-writer Tim Seeley had been following it and found it “hilarious, sexy and uncomfortably honest,” which could describe Money Shot.

Caroline Leigh Layne: Mimosa Memoirs is the first project I started posting online consistently (it is currently on hiatus as I work on Money Shot and Free Hexel). It started as a way to tell my friends about the terrible, terrible dates I have been on. I quickly realized that Mimosa Memoirs offers readers this shared experience because so many men and women have been on that cringe date at some point.

DF: What is your take on Money Shot as a comic? I understand your work will begin with its third arc, out in May.

Caroline Leigh Layne: Money Shot is hilarious! I love the first two volumes and I think Tim and Sarah’s writing for the third arc is great and I’m excited to be part of it.

Yes, I’ll be taking over the art from the talented Rebekah Isaacs for this next arc. Rebekah is fantastic and I am a huge fan of her work! I have some big shoes to fill but I’m looking forward to bringing my stylized approach to Money Shot.

Working with the team at Vault Comics has been an amazing experience so far. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with this talented group of people.

DF: Have you designed any new characters for the book? Is that an aspect of comics you enjoy?

Caroline Leigh Layne: I helped design the newest character, Dr. Yazaman Blanco. Tim and Sarah had a pretty clear idea of what they wanted her to look like and it was fun to bring their vision to life. I have also designed some of the aliens in the series. I absolutely love character design and it has been great exploring the characters in Money Shot.

DF: Will those familiar with your work recognize your “style”, or are you taking a new approach to your art with Money Shot?

Caroline Leigh Layne: I have always had a distinct style and I’m excited to incorporate it into Money Shot. My style approach is to draw sexy people being sexy. Which fits really well with Money Shot’s overall aesthetic.

DF: Caroline, are there any other projects you are involved with that you can tell readers about?

Caroline Leigh Layne: I am currently finishing up a webcomic series called Free Hexel which can be found on Webtoon. It is a K-Pop inspired sci-fi comic with magic, music and great outfits.

I have also done mini-comics, zines, and other personal works which can all be found on my Patreon.

Mimosa Memoirs also on Webtoon and my social media will be back soon with more updates about my horrific dating life!

Dynamic Forces would like to thank Caroline Leigh Layne for taking time out of her busy schedule to answer our questions. Money Shot #11 from Vault Comics is slated to be on sale May 26th!
