DF Interview: Nathan Stockman brings the look to Kevin and the dinos in ‘Savage’

By Byron Brewer

Teenage heartthrob. Feral social icon. Dinosaur hunter? Born and raised on an uncharted island full of prehistoric dangers, Kevin Sauvage has a taste of home when a mutant dino threat invades England!

From the mad minds of writer Max Bemis and artist Nathan Stockman comes the craziest action book of 2021: Savage! DF was anxious to discuss this latest iteration of the Valiant iconic character, so we chatted about the coming book with artist Nathan Stockman.

Dynamic Forces: Nate, what brings you to the Valiant Universe’s world of Savage? Have you been a fan of past stories (especially the art) and do you like drawing dinosaurs?

Nathan Stockman: Oh man! Drawing dinosaurs is a blast! I was super into them when I was a kid and Jurassic Park hit me at just the perfect time. My favorite Transformer group was always the Dinobots too. So yeah, big fan of the scaly menaces! I loved the original Savage series and the art in it was incredible! A very high bar set indeed! Hopefully I won’t shame myself too much in comparison!

DF: Readers have seen Savage and similar characters before. As one who is illustrating a new saga for the warrior, give us your take on the character, especially as you are handling him in the new book.

Nathan Stockman: Well, the previous series set up the general look of Savage and we’re taking that awesome design and putting him into modern London. It’s a cool juxtaposition and makes for a nice visual. He can look very out of place and uncomfortable in a city setting. So that’s an important aspect of his body language too. Savage finds himself in a very different scenario than the previous series but the threats he faces will be both very familiar and very unfamiliar.

DF: Can you please give readers an idea of what this new adventure is about, or at least its initial issues?

Nathan Stockman: It’s about Kevin struggling to find his place in a world he doesn’t totally feel comfortable in. He was in his element on his island, living a carefree and solitary life. Now he’s thrust headfirst into the world of social media and celebrity, notions he was blissfully unaware of before. And if that isn’t difficult enough, there may be some toothy threats lined up too!

DF: Did you get a chance to design any new characters (I hope)? If so, tell us which might be your favorite(s).

Nathan Stockman: I did! Kevin is the biggest carryover from the first series so the majority of the rest of the characters were ones the team got to create for this one! It’s hard to pick a favorite as each one is fun in their own way. There’s a group who you will meet in the first issue that are super fun to draw though!

DF: Speaking of design, in the course of working on Savage did you encounter either a character or set piece that was particularly difficult? Or conversely, did you fall in love with a character (no fair using the ones above) or scene setup of your design?

Nathan Stockman: To be honest every page is at least a little bit difficult. Getting a camera angle or a pose that gets across the emotion you’re going for is a constant battle. It’s one I relish though. The storytelling is the most important aspect for me so I take care to make sure it’s as clear as I can make it. So this means blood, sweat and tears on every page. Lots of tears especially!

DF: As an artist, Nate, enlighten readers a little about how you utilize your artist’s toolbox to change tones from scene switch to scene switch; express moods; etc. I find this fascinating.

Nathan Stockman: I think the biggest and most utilized one is expression and body language. I love acting with characters. But I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention our colorist, Triona Farrell, at this point. We’re incredibly lucky to have one of the best colorists in the industry on board and she can set a scene or a tone like no one else. It’s amazing how much she can elevate a page. She is definitely our not-so-secret weapon on this book!

DF: Talk about working with Max Bemis.

Nathan Stockman: Max’s scripts are super fun to work off. Chock full of cool set pieces and great character moments. He’s crafted a really good story and every page is a joy to draw!

DF: Nate, what other projects current or near-future do you have coming out about which you can tell the readers?

Nathan Stockman: I’ve a few things in the pipeline, but being comics I’m not allowed talk about anything! So for now, it’s all Savage!

Dynamic Forces would like to thank Nathan Stockman for taking time out of his busy schedule to answer our questions. Savage #1 from Valiant Entertainment is slated to be on sale Feb. 17th!
