DF Interview: Jed MacKay gears the Avengers up for armored action in ‘Avengers Mech Strike’ By Byron Brewer The Avengers are confronted with an unstoppable new menace, one that is seemingly impervious to their every strength! But the Avengers aren't so easily beaten, and when new threats arise, powerful new tools must be brought to bear! From Marvel Comics comes Avengers Mech Strike, a new limited series from writer Jed MacKay and artist Carlos Magno! DF was so excited about the LS, we jumped on it immediately and chatted about the title with scribe Jed MacKay. Dynamic Forces: Jed, tell us the inspiration for the idea that grew into this very unusual Avengers book. Was Tony Stark having a yard sale? (laughs) Jed MacKay: Well, it was something that came to me already formed. We had Avengers, we had mech-suits, and it was up to me to figure out how they all went together. What are the Avengers going up against? What kind of threat could be so dire that Earth’s Mightiest Heroes would need to up their game with their new toys? And from there, it snowballed into the book we’re going to see come out very soon! DF: What can you tell us about the storyline of this mini-series? Jed MacKay: We’re seeing the Avengers suddenly outside of their depth, bushwhacked by a new threat out of nowhere. They’re put on the back foot – not only do they have to save the day, they soon realize that the problem isn’t isolated to just one monster, in just one place – and the day won’t be saved for long. We’re going to see the Avengers with new tools, old enemies, and unlikely allies as a routine monster-swatting turns into a battle for Earth itself. DF: What Avengers will be assembling for this adventure? Did I see the Black Widow in her armor on Kei Zama’s main cover from her recent space adventure in the main Avengers title? (I hope.) Jed MacKay: We’ve got an all-star lineup: Captain America, Captain Marvel, Spider-Man, the Hulk, Black Widow, Thor, Iron Man and the Black Panther… a pretty dynamic team. It’s been a lot of fun balancing these huge personalities! DF:Without spoilers, can you tell us anything about the brand new enemy the heroes will be combating? Can you drop any clues at all about the mysterious mastermind pulling the strings behind the scenes? (Hopefully not Mephisto or the Grandmaster.) Jed MacKay: The Avengers start by going up against a hitherto unknown threat they dub a “Biomechanoid”, but that’s merely the tip of the iceberg. I won’t say much else about the person behind the scenes, save that they’re a particular favorite of mine... and no, it’s not the Grandmaster or Mephisto, haha! DF: Talk about the jaw-dropping art of Carlos Magno. Jed MacKay: I feel like I keep saying it over and over, but Carlos has taken everything I’ve written and made it bigger, louder, more exciting than I had first imagined. Scale is a tricky thing in comics: too often a giant monster appears weightless on the page, or simply unbelievable. When Carlos has a giant monster trash a city, you believe it! When he has our favorite superheroes swinging in to battle it, you fear for them. And when he has mech-suits clashing with any number of weird and wild creatures, you’re right there with them. DF: While we have you, tell readers a little about what is going on in your new Black Cat series, a part of the King in Black event. How is Felicia, a street-level thief, coping with handling a space god like Knull? Can you give us some background on the book and tell us the basics of the storyline? Jed MacKay: The events of King in Black have left no one safe, not even born survivors like the Black Cat and her friends. Knull’s business has intruded on Felicia’s business, and she doesn’t allow for that sort of thing. So once again, she finds herself involved with forces way above her head. Thing about cats, though, is that they always land on their feet… DF: Jed, what other projects are you involved in that you can tell readers about? Jed MacKay: It’s going to be a busy few months! Black Cat and Taskmaster continue on in the coming months, along with Mech Strike’s debut. This spring sees the debut of Magic: The Gathering #1 from BOOM! as well, which I’ve been working on and am quite excited about!
