DF Interview: David M. Booher sends his clockwork hero on a quest to unite friends and foes in ‘Canto and the City of Giants’

By Byron Brewer

Canto has surprised, delighted, and moved readers with tales of the clockwork hero – fighting for love, his people, and hope! In this special Canto mini-series, our titular hero reunites with the Giant Guardians of Dis, Fra and Ba, as well as other friends and foes, to recruit the kingdom of Giants to his quest to defeat the Shrouded Man.

Canto co-creator David M. Booher and artist Sebastián Piriz (Headspace, Disaster Inc.) bridge Canto II: The Hollow Men and the upcoming Canto III as they present Canto and the City of Giants! DF has followed Canto since inception so we caught up with co-creator and scribe David M. Booher to check out the latest for the tin soldier.

Dynamic Forces: David, I will be honest: I always loved Canto and his concept since our very first interview on your very first clockworks adventure of the little guy. But I never anticipated such reader support for what is becoming a franchise … a franchise that is getting ready to continue with a mini-series and two more full-on book installments. Your response to this fan support?

David M. Booher: It’s all been pretty overwhelming. I loved Canto the moment I saw artist Drew Zucker’s first concept drawing. Canto looked exactly like the kind of character I would grab off the shelf immediately. So much of what’s out there looks the same or reads the same. Canto felt different. I’m thrilled that so many others have felt that same pull toward this little clockwork hero that I did. Without the readers, we definitely wouldn’t be announcing three new story arcs, so thank you!

DF: OK, after saying all that I have said, I still must ask (again): For those under a rock for the last year or so (and who could blame them, LOL), tell us who Canto is and the concept behind his world(s) please.

David M. Booher: Canto is a little tin hero in search of a heart. He’s part of an enslaved race of small clockwork people who aren’t allowed to have names or tell stories or love one another. Their hearts have been removed and replaced with clocks. But Canto has a name and he loves a little tin girl. When her clock gets damaged, he must go on a dangerous adventure across their fantastical world to bring her heart back to save her. I like to say it’s part adventure, part fantasy, and all heart.

DF: What can you tell readers about the new three-issue mini-series, Canto and the City of Giants?

David M. Booher: So at this point in Canto’s story, he’s been on two big adventures—one to save his beloved, and a second to save all his people. He’s faced the Shrouded Man, an evil sorcerer who has enslaved the world, and he’s gained a weapon to defeat this nemesis. The final battle is coming, but first Canto needs allies. City of Giants sees Canto reunited with the giants who once guarded the City of Dis.  He’s there to ask for their help in the war against the Shrouded Man. When he finds them in a tight spot, he’ll venture to a strange and dark corner of the Unnamed World to secure their freedom.

DF: Any new characters debuting in the mini, perhaps old flames rekindled?

David M. Booher: We’ll reunite with Canto’s giant friends Fra and Ba. We’ll see the Misturian Witch, who readers might remember from Canto & the Clockwork Fairies. And we’ll get a glimpse of the bickering royal couple who rule over the City of Giants.

DF: And the big-bad?

David M. Booher: It’s a beast known only as Ferro that lives deep within a labyrinth outside the city. Canto and his endless well of courage will face it, even though he doesn’t have a weapon strong enough to defeat it. Or does he?

DF: Since Canto began his adventures, things have obviously been happening and there does not seem to be the trope comics re-set. The knight is having the feels. In a question I have not asked since Canto I, give us your take on the character. Who is he now? How has he grown, changed? As I know, characters often take over from writers and things happen. Any changes that you made that were not initially seen/planned?

David M. Booher: The biggest surprise for me when writing Canto is that he’s kind of grown up in front of me. He’s going through a very human emotional cycle. In the first story, he was a wide-eyed wanderer filled with a foolish amount of courage. In the second arc, he learns the old adage: heavy is the head that wears the crown. He now knows more about the world, and he’s more of a realist. In these next three arcs, he’ll go through one more change, accepting that there is a greater good he’s been working toward. It could cost him everything, but it’s a sacrifice to make the world better for those who come after him.

DF: Where’s Canto co-creator Drew Zucker for this go-round? Tell readers about working with artist Sebastian Piriz for this mini-series.

David M. Booher: Drew has been a big part of the story development for City of Giants and he’s doing the incentive ratio covers for it. We brought in the fabulous Sebastian Piriz for main art duties to free up Drew’s time to get a head start on Canto III: Lionhearted which is slated for this July. It’ll be here before we know it! Sebastian has been a dream to work with. I’ve admired his work for a long time, and we were elated when he was available to lend his talent to our clockwork knight this time around.

DF: David, what other projects can you tell readers about that is coming from the Booher Backburner?

David M. Booher: There are definitely some exciting projects on the horizon. Canto III: Lionhearted and Canto IV: A Place Like Home are slated for 2021 and 2022 respectively. I have two creator-owned stories planned for 2021, a middle school graphic novel in the works, and a couple of movie projects in development. It’s a little early to talk details, but I love them all as much as I love Canto. I’m very hopeful readers will, too.

Dynamic Forces would like to thank David M. Booher for taking time out of his busy schedule to answer our questions. Canto and the City of Giants #1 from IDW is slated to hit stores April 14th!
