Spider-Man 2 might be the jewel of comic book movies next
year, but there are some gems in the rough for sure.
One of those figures to Hellboy, the long-in-the-making
adaptation of Mike Mignola's Dark Horse comic book set for
next Memorial Day weekend.
Filming of Hellboy is well underway in Prague on Revolution
Studios' Hellboy, described by the studio as "a supernatural
action adventure film."
The film stars Ron Perlman, Selma Blair, John Hurt and Jeffrey
Tambor.
Hellboy, which is written and directed by Guillermo Del
Toro, is being produced for Revolution Studios by Lawrence
Gordon, Dark Horse Comics' Mike Richardson and Lloyd Levin.
Patrick Palmer is serving as executive producer, and Hellboy
creator Mignola is serving as associate producer.
Six-time
Academy Award winner Rick Baker is creating the special makeup
effects for the film.
Here's how the studio describes the film:
"Born in the flames of hell, and brought to our world in
a pagan ritual, the fierce red hero, Hellboy (Perlman), was
saved by his friend and mentor, the benevolent Dr. Broom (Hurt).
Raised in Broom's Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense,
Hellboy joins the likes of the Mer-Man Abe Sapien, Liz Sherman
(Blair), the woman he loves who can psychically control fire,
and Myers, the FBI agent who is his rival for Liz's affections.
Together, our heroes must come to terms with fantastic powers
that prove to be both a blessing and a curse. In the process
they discover that their abilities serve to benefit mankind
but may also keep them forever isolated from the society that
only they can protect."
"Hellboy has an amazing following and we are thrilled to
be bringing it to the screen for the first time," says Revolution
Studios' Todd Garner. "Guillermo has wanted to make this film
for a long time, and we are confident his vision will remain
true to the dark and sophisticated tone that fans have come
to expect."
Jeffrey Tambor will portray FBI agent Tom Manning. Rounding
out the cast are Karel Roden, who plays Grigori Rasputin;
Victoria Smurfit, who plays Ilsa, Rupert Evans, who plays
FBI Agent Myers; and Doug Jones, who plays Abe Sapien.
Del Toro most recently directed Blade II and says he's having
even more fun with Hellboy.
"I'm only doing this movie only because I'm desperately
in love with the comic, not because I want to change it or
make it better," he says. "I think when you know of something
good, you want to tell the world about it.
"And also, that Mike has not only been part of every thing
since the beginning, the moment the movie got greenlit, Mike
came aboard and he will stay through the process. So we can
assure not only hours of fun crushing him against the wall
- which I do often - but also that the property gets translated
to film the right way."
"It's
taken five years to get here," Mignola says. "And I have to
say, now that we're here, we're here with all the people we
wanted to be here with. The director who we wanted to do with
and the star we agreed upon the very first time we spoke.
The script, which we're thrilled with. We didn't make any
gigantic compromises along the way."
DelToro says the film will capture the essence of the comic
and not be turned into an R-rated shockfest.
"The comic is not gory. It's violent, but no gory. We will
have all the tentacles you can choke on," he says.
"The comic has a lot of action, but it is not gory. When
the movie is done, when we think it is ready, that's the movie
that we're going to fight to put out in front of you. We're
not going to go around crying, 'They made us cut that.'"
