Waiting For Tommy XXIII
Interview with Grant Morrison
RICHARD: Talking of delays, there's a big one hanging around that makes South Connex Railways a punctual prude. The first new reissue of the Zenith trade paperbacks has been famously held up for over a year. Reportedly printed, they are now holed up in a warehouse, awaiting distribution, while legal matters concerning the ownership of the character by yourself and Rebellion are finalised. Can you clear up any of the details -- by which I mean, who, how, when, where, why and what the f***? Is there any short-term hope for the republication and conclusion of your Zenith story?

GRANT: This one's in the hands of my lawyers so legally I'm afraid I can't say a word about what's going on.

RICHARD: Arse.

GRANT: I've got one of the books though, and apparently fifty of 'em got out and were sold at a Steve Yeowell signing on the occupied West Bank.

RICHARD: Zionist conspiracy. Got to be. Okay there's an X-Men fanboy sitting on my lap who wants to ask a question. Chuck Austen and Joe Casey - who writes a better Uncanny X-Men?

GRANT: Casey. He's a mate and he can fly unaided at 100mph, so he wins.

RICHARD: The fanboy is sated. Right, almost done, what will Grant Morrison be bringing to the world in the future - that we might not expect? And while I've got you here, finally, anything more on LeSexy? Still with Cameron Stewart? And when?

GRANT: It's on hold. The new comics projects for 2003 are INDESTRUCTIBLE MAN and We3. Otherwise, I'm taking a break to work on other stuff - I just finished the first draft of Sleepless Knights for Dreamworks and I've been doing a lot of games work, driven by the conviction that games are to comics what comics were to pulps. I have another series idea which I'm hoping to do with Cameron - again it's a kind of generational comedy, set in the real world, but with possibly more appeal for Americans. I'll keep you posted.

RICHARD: And are there any legal explanation for these enclosed photos I'm sending now?

GRANT: If it's the ones where I'm overseeing the necessary extermination of pedigree gypsy pups at the Pet Camp, then yes, I 'm sure I can explain how that happened...

There ARE no enclosed photos. Were these examples from your extensive and infamous 'comic porn' collection?

RICH: You're mixing up your rumour mongers. Hang on, hang on, arsing computer, right, are there any legal explanations for *these* photos?

GRANT: I was asked to do it by Wackyjac, who design and sell 'pagan' and 'anti-establishment' underwear to teen witches. Kristan and I always like to do any daft thing that comes along to relieve our boredom on the Planet of the Apes, so think of it as a kind of Victoria's Secret that should have been KEPT and perhaps the images won't hurt so badly.

Now if I hadn't been flaccid, it would have been illegal, so be glad I spared humanity.

RICHARD: While I'm very happy, I know there a number of screaming fangirls who disagree. Back, ladies, back, that's all your getting for now. Marvel is currently publishing New X-Men by Grant Morrison. DC is currently publishing The Filth, as well as issuing new collections of Animal Man and The Invisibles. One day Marvel will reprint Skrull Kill Krew. And Flex Mentallo shall never see the light of day. The legal matters there make Zenith look like something off of Murder She Wrote.

Next week: Bill Jemas. Oh yes. And you should see the photos I've got of him.
