DF Interview: Dark Horse deploys Justin Jordan for Call of Duty: Zombies LS

By Byron Brewer

Dark Horse Comics, Activision Publishing and award-winning game development studio Treyarch have teamed up to deliver Call of Duty: Zombies, a comic book limited series of undead proportions, written by Justin Jordan (Evil Ernie: Godeater, Green Lantern: New Guardians) and illustrated by Jonathan Wayshak (Devolution), with story by Zombies director Jason Blundell and the studio’s head writer, Craig Houston.

On his quest to secure an ancient artifact known as The Kronorium, Dr. Edward Richtofen enlists the help of the Tranzit Crew, a rag tag group of survivors last seen in the Black Ops II Zombies installment “Buried.” On a deeply unstable and fractured future Earth, Stuhlinger, Misty, Russman and Marlton battle for survival against the undead horde, as they slowly uncover the truth behind Richtofen’s mysterious reappearance.

The intrigue of this story has us. And issue #1 of 6 is being released just in time for Halloween!

And, in our quest to find out more for you, DF tracked down scribe Justin Jordan. Here is what he told us.

Dynamic Forces: Justin, since game development studio Treyarch first introduced Zombies to the Call of Duty franchise as an Easter Egg in Call of Duty: World at War, it has grown into its own pop-culture phenomenon. Tell us a little about how this limited series came about please.

Justin Jordan: There’s a fairly elaborate ongoing story happening in the Zombies DLC that’s come out with the various games, and Treyarch wanted to be able to expand that world and tell stories that would fit into their narrative but weren’t necessarily going to get a DLC of their own. And comics is a good place to do that.

DF: How did you become involved as writer, and are you a fan of Call of Duty: Black Ops III?

Justin Jordan: Haha, I wish there were a better story, but basically Dark Horse emailed me and asked if I wanted to write it. And I did! Because while I am not a first person shooter guy or, honestly, a gamer, I have played a crap ton of Call of Duty Zombies stuff. That’s the only part of the series I’m all that familiar with, though.

DF: Can you tell us a little of the procedure in how the LS was put together? How it was working with Zombies director Jason Blundell and the studio’s lead writer, Craig Houston?

Justin Jordan: It’s been great! They are very cool, and have been very open to what I wanted to do with the book. Basically, the process was them telling me what part of the DLC story they wanted this to fit in, and what it needed to show, and then letting me plot that out. We then came back around and made sure that it had all the details that make it fit into the universe’s continuity.

DF: Who are the Tranzit Crew?

Justin Jordan: Basically, it’s four survivors of the zombie apocalypse who managed to get pulled into Richtofen’s schemes. There’s Stuhlinger, who hears Richtofen’s voice in his head; Russman, who is a crazy old man with a history that connects to what’s going on with the zombies; Misty, who is sort of the badass of the group; and Marlton, who is more or less their tech guy.

They’re not really friends, but they’re stuck with each other trying to survive the zombies and the situations that Richtofen puts them in.

DF: What (if anything) can you tell us about the mysterious reappearance of Dr. Edward Richtofen?

Justin Jordan: Basically nothing, except that he plays a big, big role in the story.

DF: We have ways of making you talk! (laughs) … So, how has it been working with artist Jonathan Wayshak? What does he bring to the zombies table?

Justin Jordan: Well, if you’re familiar with his work on the Dynamite book Devolution, you know he’s the right guy for this gig. He’s got the ability to show monsters and mayhem that is exactly what this book has to have.

DF: From what I have seen, those covers for the series by artist Simon Bisley are out of this world (or should I say “grave,” lol)! Thoughts?

Justin Jordan: Oh, they’re amazing. And, you know, getting to do a book with covers by Bisley makes my inner teenager very, very happy.

Dynamic Forces would like to thank Justin Jordan for taking time out of his busy schedule to answer our questions. Call of Duty: Zombies #1 (of 6) from Dark Horse Comics hits stores Oct. 19th!
