DF Interview: Blood on the beach: Joelle Jones’ Lady Killer is back

By Byron Brewer

Josie Schuller is looking to get a killer tan this year in Lady Killer 2.

Announced during the last San Diego Comic Con, Lady Killer 2 continues the story of assuming housewife/professional hitwoman Josie Schuller and her very unassuming family.

To get the 411 on the planned mini-series from Dark Horse Comics, Dynamic Forces hit the pool early to see what talented writer/artist Joelle Jones has planned for her murderous housewife, now down in the Sunshine State.

Dynamic Forces: First, Joelle, how does it feel to have our “Lady Killer” Josie Schuller back in “action,” so to speak?

Joelle Jones: I'm really excited to be jumping back into it and getting to play around in that world some more!

DF: And our new locale is Cocoa Beach, Florida, former home of I Dream of Jeannie?

Joelle Jones: Yep, it is. Thought I'd move the family across the country and have them start over in a climate that would allow for some different artistic choices.

DF: Now that your longtime collaborator Jamie L. Rich is a Senior Editor at Vertigo, you are flying solo for the first time. What differences does this bring to your unique brand of storytelling?

Joelle Jones: Besides the obvious? I don't think too much. From the beginning, we have collaborated over conversation and I have worked with Jamie so long now that even without him on the book anymore I can feel his input without actually having him around.

DF: For the uninitiated, tell us about your perception of Josie as a character.

Joelle Jones: I’d say she is kind and funny but has a dark side and a constant threat of losing the battle of keeping balance in her life.

DF: So what is our gal Josie up to in this sequel book?

Joelle Jones: She has decided to go into business for herself. Start up an operation of her own.

DF: In Lady Killer, you had a great talent for mixing very dark humor with very graphic violence. I assume that will continue here?

Joelle Jones: Without a doubt.

DF: We’re curious: What was the fan reception for Lady Killer and Josie’s highly unusual character the first time around?

Joelle Jones: It seemed to be really well received. People enjoyed and asked for more. That's why we decided to take it to another series.

Dynamic Forces would like to thank Joelle Jones for taking time out of her busy schedule to answer our questions. Lady Killer 2 #1 hits stores later this year!
