Jon Favreau on Iron Man

MTV talked to Iron Man director Jon Favreau, who gave some interesting quotes. Here are a few of them about the movie:

"It's the first movie Marvel is self-financing," he said of a new deal that frees the makers of the "Spider-Man" and "X-Men" movies from studio control. "We're set to come out in the summer of '08, and we'll start shooting in January."

"We're gonna have it take place in the present day, but there will be an origin story that has the old, gray Iron Man suit; eventually it will progress into more of the modern look," Favreau said. "That's the fun of doing the first one."

"The alcoholism doesn't come into play until later on in the story of Iron Man," he said. "[The comic] started off in the '60s, where it was about him as a successful manufacturer who developed this suit. Then, later, it spins off into that story about him fighting against himself. I think we're going to lay the groundwork for it, but the first one's going to explore him taking on this alter ego of Iron Man, and developing the suit, and what happens politically within the Stark Corporation."

Mentioning an eventual "Iron Man 2," Favreau said that actor playing Tony Stark for his franchise is unlikely to be a major star (Tom Cruise was briefly attached to the role years ago). Instead, the director hopes to announce his discovery of a relative unknown from the Brandon Routh ("Superman Returns") mold later this year.

GHOST RIDER TRAILER HITS WEB

Presumably to be running in front of X-Men: The Last Stand this weekend, Sony/Columbia has released the trailer from Ghost Rider starring Nic Cage as Johnny Blaze/Ghost Rider.

The film, which has been delayed in its release by nearly a year, is still set to open theatrically on February 16th, 2007. The trailer features many effects shots, and does finally show what Ghost Rider will look like in action. Written and directed by Daredevil’s Mark Steven Johnson, the trailer has many iconic comic book shots in it, much like Johnson put into Daredevil.

The film’s storyline follows Johnny Blaze when he sells his soul to the devil Mephistopheles to save his dying father. Years after, when he is reunited with the woman he had to leave when he sold his soul, Mephistopheles offers Blaze a new deal – become Ghost Rider and defeat Mephistopheles’ son, Blackheart (who is seeking to usurp his father), and he will be free.

NINTENDO SURPRISES KEEP COMING

The Nintendo controller will feature a microphone and will store a user phonebook/address book while it will be used as a VoIP phone and will help gamers communicate while online without the need for a headset.

Nintendo's controller surprises keep coming in and as the details are revealed so is an underlying theme to the company's plan for the device. The new details mention a microphone built-in to the headset which will allow the controller to be used as a straight-forward VoIP phone. The news also mentions that users will be able to use the phone for video calls although it does not clarify exactly how a camera will come into play in the setup. The interesting news however, relates to the phone/address book details which will be stored on the controller suggesting that Nintendo expects each user of the Wii in the household to own their own Wiimote.

The inclusion of a microphone built-into the controller, along with the speaker announced at E3, will also offer gamers more freedom during online play as they will be able to communicate with fellow gamers without the need for a headset. This makes sense as most images we have of people playing with the infamous device, show them standing up and at some distance from the console.

Just when you think Nintendo has no more Wii related mysteries the company hits you with another one and this time it is the addition of Wiichannel.com to the list of Nintendo owned domains. Rumors of a Wii dedicated interactive channel that will carry animations, games and game trailers, TV shows and other audio/visual content have already started doing the rounds but as most of us have found the hard way, Nintendo is not playing by the book on this one; so expect nothing and anticipate everything.

'Goosebumps' Graphic Novels

Scholastic, which has scored a huge success with its full color editions of Jeff Smith's Bone, has announced another blockbuster title for its Graphix line of graphic novels -- R.L. Stine's Goosebumps. The first volume in the series, Goosebumps Graphix 1: Creepy Creatures ($8.99 trade, $16.99 hardcover), is due out this September. The 144-page full color book, which is targeted at readers from 9-12, includes three ghoulish Goosebumps tales adapted to the graphic novel format by Scott Morse (The Magic Pickle), Greg Ruth (Conan the Barbarian) and Gabriel Hernandez (The Thief of Always).

In addition to three volumes of Jeff Smith's Bone, which have sold a total of nearly a million copies, Scholastic's Graphix imprint has also recently released a graphic novel adaptation by Raina Telgemeier of the first volume in the highly popular Babysitter's Club series.

THE BRAWL FOR IT ALL: SAVAGE DRAGON VS. WANTED

Here's one for those fans who are
tired of talking head crossovers where it takes half a dozen issues
or more for anything to happen. Creator Erik Larsen takes the bull by
the horns with the superhero crossover no one saw coming: Savage
Dragon vs. Mark Millar's WANTED and delivers an action-packed epic
that fits neatly into the pages of SAVAGE DRAGON #128!

SAVAGE DRAGON started off as a cutting edge superhero book for older
readers that focused on over-the-top action, dark humor and planet-
shattering adventures. It blazed the path for books like THE
AUTHORITY, THE ULTIMATES and WANTED, and with this crossover, the
book returns to its roots.

A six-issue miniseries published by Image/Top Cow, Millar had
previously stated the cast of WANTED were never to appear again, but
the moment Larsen proposed the crossover, he had to make one exception.

"JG and I always made it quite clear that WANTED was going to be six
issues long and self-contained," explains Millar. "It sold a lot of
books, the highest-selling creator-owned book since the '90s, I
believe, but we stuck to our guns and turned down all offers of a
sequel because we liked it just the way it was. That said, only a wee
daftie would turn down a chance to see their characters in SAVAGE
DRAGON. Dragon is one of our favourite creator-owned books of all
time and Erik is one of our favourite writer-artists. This is a One
Night Only special and our babies are in good hands. If you don't buy
this, you're a monkey."

"I had a story that had been building over the years where a member
of Dragon's supporting cast took over the world, and I was looking
around for something out of left field to throw into the mix and
after reading WANTED, it just seemed to click in my head what a
perfect combination these two concepts would be," said SAVAGE DRAGON
creator, Erik Larsen. "Mark Millar has been an enthusiastic supporter
of SAVAGE DRAGON for years and when I brought up the idea to him, he
was more than happy to loan me his characters to play with. The
combination is pure gold!"

Continued Larsen, "The nice thing about doing creator-owned books is
that you can literally do whatever you want without fear of someone
getting in the way or telling you what you can or can't do. When I
say that a world will shatter, characters will die and Savage
Dragon's world will never be the same, you'd better believe I mean it.

"In this case, Mark and JG Jones have been kind enough to let me work
in Wesley Gibbons and The Fraternity directly from the midst of the
original WANTED miniseries. It fits in beautifully and sheds new
light on events only touched on in the original WANTED miniseries."

A smackdown brawl that will excite loyal fans and new readers alike,
SAVAGE DRAGON #128 is wall-to-wall story with a low cover price of
$2.99! It will not only feature a variant cover painted by WANTED co-
creator JG Jones, but the cover by creator Erik Larsen will be done
in watercolors – a first for Larsen – as well.

"I'm thrilled to have the Wanted characters appear in the pages of
SAVAGE DRAGON." WANTED co-creator, JG Jones added, "I've been a fan
of the Big Green Guy for years, so this definitely sets off my inner
fanboy. SAVAGE DRAGON is absolutely the best monthly monster fight
in comics. Hands down."

SAVAGE DRAGON #128 (MAY061745) will be in stores July 2006 and is
available for order in the May issue of Diamond's PREVIEWS. Mark
Miller and J.G. Jones' WANTED miniseries is collected in a trade
paperback (FEB058403) and is available now.

ENGLUND TALKS ELM STREET PREQUEL

Currently deep into production of his horror/comedy directorial venture KILLER PAD (see last report here), Robert Englund says that there will be another FREDDY VS. JASON movie—but he’s hopeful that a project closer to his horror heart, the long-rumored origins-of-Freddy feature, will come first. “The rumor I hear is that there will be a NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET prequel before the next FREDDY VS. JASON,” Englund tells Fango. “I’ve heard all sorts of stuff about it, but the best news I heard was that John [HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER] McNaughton may be directing it. I recently saw HENRY for the first time and it scared the crap out of me. It really worked. I love what he does with docudrama, which I believe would be a great approach for a NIGHTMARE prequel."

Englund sees the potential film as a chance to bring a more human face to Freddy. “I would love to do this one because I wouldn’t have to wear the makeup,” he notes. “I would just be able to go ahead and play this Irish white-trash guy.” The actor pictures the NIGHTMARE prequel as being structured in the manner of the long-running TV series LAW & ORDER: “There would be the slaughter of children, the capture of Freddy by a couple of cops, the horrible lawyers who get Freddy off on a technicality—and then it’s the monster and the villagers, and Freddy gets burned.”

Kung Fu Headed for the Big Screen

Warner Bros.-based Legendary Pictures is bringing Kung Fu to the big screen after acquiring film rights to the 1970s TV series from series creator Ed Spielman.

Variety says Legendary has optioned a screenplay from Spielman and Howard Friedlander, also a writer on the original series.

The film is expected to explore the events on which the TV show was based and the origins of the main characters.

David Carradine immortalized the lead role of Kwai Chang Caine, a Shaolin monk who flees China for the American Wild West, where he helps the powerless.

Dark Horse Exclusive Sales Agent of ReelArt

Dark Horse Comics and ReelArt Studios have announced an agreement for Dark Horse to act as exclusive sales agent for Reel Art’s upcoming program of licensed, limited-edition statues, busts and wall plaques.

“We are very excited to be associated with ReelArt Studios in putting this sales program together,” Dark Horse Vice President Product Development David Scroggy stated, “and are confident that they will help us make the release of these highly collectable, top quality limited editions a key component of both Dark Horse’s and Reel Art’s collector program.”

"Mike Richardson is one of my business heroes.'" ReelArt Studios President Michael Hudson remarked, "and Dark Horse is an amazing company, well managed and staffed with people who love what they do. The company has stood the test of time and has never forgotten it's roots. With a sales and marketing staff that is second to none, unparalleled product quality, like minded business principles and a matching love for pop culture, I couldn't imagine a better union for ReelArt Studios. I anticipate great things to come from this exciting venture with Dark Horse."

“ I echo Michael’s excitement,” Dark Horse President Mike Richardson responded. “Ever since I looked over their product line, I knew that our two companies would be a great fit. Many of my favorite artists and characters are represented, such as Frank Frazetta, Tarzan, Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon, Frank Cho and William Stout, to name just a few.”

The initial offerings handled by Dark Horse will be: Going Ape, based on work by Neal and Jason Adams; Dino Girl ,based on work by William Stout,; Number One, also inspired by Stout,; The Blue Bulleteer from AC Comics,; The Three Stooges wall plaque,; Suzanne, inspired by Gil Elvgren and Attack of the Brain Monster, inspired by Brett Blevins.

There is a full schedule of upcoming projects, which can be viewed at reelartstudios.com. Of special note is a series of four large statues that capture the most famous paintings of legendary artist Frank Frazetta in three dimensions. The first of these, Snow Giants, is slated for display at both ReelArt Studios and Dark Horse Comics booths at Comic-Con International in San Diego July 20-23. Sculpted by Tony Cipriano, this oversize masterpiece is one of the most eagerly-anticipated pieces in years.

The creation of these sculptures begins with the design. Some of the field’s top sculptors are contracted, and at this point traditional sculpting and painting takes place, arriving at a finished piece that is remarkably true to the look and style of the original subject matter. Edition sizes are carefully considered, resulting in a track record of quick sell-outs that enhances each pieces’ investment potential.

Since 1986, Dark Horse Comics has published original comic books, graphic novels and collectable merchandise items. In recent years, it has selectively added distributed items to its own product line, under the direction of Rachelle Callaway, Director of Distributed Products.

Top Cow/Marvel Crossovers Planned

After months of careful planning, Top Cow Productions and Marvel Comics have slated many of the pieces of their ongoing packaging agreement. The appearance of Top Cow artists on Marvel books and crossover specials are planned.

Click to enlargeThe crossovers start in August with a Darkness/Wolverine one-shot, pairing Top Cow's supernatural mobster with Marvel's mutant warrior. Frank Tieri, who has written both The Darkness and Wolverine, handles scripting chores, while Tyler Kirkham, who's already drawn Amazing Spider-Man #530 and #531 as part of the packaging deal, handles art.

Next up, a Witchblade/Punisher one-shot will grace shelves in December. Ongoing Witchblade writer Ron Marz will tackle the script, aided and abetted by Witchblade artist Mike Choi.

Kirkham and Choi will also contribute art to two Marvel Comics series, with announcements coming from Marvel and Top Cow at the Wizard World Philadelphia convention, June 2-4, 2006.

“This partnership with Top Cow is one that everyone here at Marvel is thrilled to be a part of,” said Marvel Publisher Dan Buckley. “The character interactions and artistic possibilities on the books opens up many new doors and all add up to one thing-better product for the fans.”

“We're very excited about our business with Marvel, and the positive ripple effect it will have at home at Top Cow,” remarked Top Cow President Matt Hawkins. “We're riding a great wave of new and building interest in a title like Witchblade, and relaunching old favorites such as Cyberforce. Putting our artists on the high-profile platform of some of Marvel's great characters will allow everyone to see just how great they are.”
