DF Interview: Mark Waid helps assemble the Avengers for weekly saga, No Surrender

By Byron Brewer

It’s the end of an Avengers era as we know it! And in the team’s final days, a change has come to the Marvel Universe in the form of a story that’s filled with so much action and so much drama, Marvel had no choice but to make it a weekly epic.

Beginning this January, Marvel will unleash “Avengers: No Surrender” with Avengers #675, a weekly saga that unites the casts and creative teams of three titles into a stunning tale of heroic action, jaw-dropping cliffhangers and drastic adventures. The Avengers, Uncanny Avengers and U.S. Avengers come together in a powerhouse of an event that will be unleashed in a story as spectacular as the Marvel Universe itself.

Featuring one of Marvel’s biggest collaborations to date, each issue will be co-written by superstar writers Mark Waid, Al Ewing and Jim Zub.

Visiting the House of Ideas, DF spun its monolithic Scribes Wheel and the ticker landed on “Mark Waid”. So below is the veteran writer’s take on this massive and monumental weekly Assemblers saga.

Dynamic Forces: Mark, tell us what “Avengers: No Surrender” is all about and what it means for characters we all love and care about.

Mark Waid: “No Surrender” is the ultimate Avengers story. Someone—or some two—are playing a deadly game with the Earth, and every living Avenger from every Avengers team must unite to prevent the world’s destruction.

DF: Tell us about the writers of this extravaganza. How will Al Ewing, Jim Zub and yourself be handling this grand chore as collaborators?

Mark Waid: With editors Tom Brevoort and Alanna Smith, the three of us sat down at the beginning of the year and hammered the structure out over the course of a couple of meetings. From there, Jim largely took the organizational point and we all locked onto certain characters and certain subplots—though we certainly mixed and matched along the way.

DF: Who are the artists we will be seeing on each issue?

Mark Waid: Pepe Larraz will draw the first month, Kim Jacinto will draw the second month, and Paco Medina will draw the third month.

DF: I want to get something out of the way, if I can: You have described the coming adventure for the Assemblers as “half celebration, half wake.” We’ve lost so many characters to new versions, old favorites which seem to be coming back in some form or fashion with Marvel Legacy. Is there more Avengers’ blood set to be spilled in “No Surrender”?

Mark Waid: I…hmm. I don’t want to give the impression that we’re shooting fish in a barrel (look out, Red Wolf!), but neither do I want to spoil any surprises. Let’s say that by “half wake,” I meant for an Avengers era (and maybe for the teams themselves)—though I can promise you that there’ll be a different number of Avengers coming out of this than going in.

DF: Speaking of old favorites, rumor has it the Founders will be back in true fashion in this book. Can you address that at all?

Mark Waid: Some in flesh, some in spirit—but what we more veteran writers sometimes lose sight of is that “our” Avengers are not necessarily “your” Avengers. (Look, I’ve been reading long enough where I still think of Rogue as one of the “new” characters.) We needed to spread the love around among all the Avengers past and present, all of whom you’ll be seeing. Every Avenger is someone’s favorite, even Quicksilver, and we want to honor that.

DF: What characters are you looking forward to writing? Will there be any great reunion combos (like we’ve seen with the Beast and Wonder Man) you can hint about?

Mark Waid: Oh, we’d be fools not to give Simon and Hank some screen time together. The two Wasps have their moments, and Hawkeye will have a very special reunion—though not necessarily a happy one—with a former ally. Me, I love writing Jarvis, the living repository of Avengers history (which title, should Brevoort get hit by a bus, falls to me).

DF: How do Voyager and Living Lightning (now just Lightning, I guess) fit in here? Any hints at all?

Mark Waid: Lightning has a very surprising role in the overall proceedings. He’s now a full-out gambler—and the stakes he’s willing to put on the table at a crucial moment means he’d better have one hell of a hand to play.

Voyager! You mean Valerie Vector, my new favorite Avenger? You mean the one who readers think is our new Sentry or some other similarly time-displaced historical anomaly? That one? Dude, I did that twenty years ago with Triumph over at another company, and a good magician never shows the same trick twice.

DF: I have not seen any real mention of the big-bad. Can you offer anything at all toward that end?

Mark Waid: Tom? HEY, TOM??

DF: Mark, I imagine this will be keeping you busy for awhile, but for argument’s sake are there any projects current or near-future you can tell us about?

Mark Waid: Following “No Surrender”, assuming there’s a Marvel Universe left, I’m gonna take a swing at one of the few classic Marvel characters I’ve never got to really take a swing at, at least in his or her current incarnation.

Dynamic Forces would like to thank Mark Waid for taking time out of his busy schedule to answer our questions. “Avengers: No Surrender” begins in Avengers #675 from Marvel Comics, which hits stores Jan. 10th!
